The orchestra of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar performs under the direction of Prof. Nicolás Pasquet. Barnabás Fekete is a student of Prof. Markus Leoson's percussion class in Weimar. The Hungarian found his way to classical percussion through jazz and playing in various bands. He is currently employed as a temporary solo percussionist in the Jena Philharmonic. The percussion concerto ‘Speaking Drums’ by the renowned contemporary composer Péter Eötvös – also a Hungarian – is inspired by Indian music and jazz, among other things. In addition to the large percussion apparatus, sound poems by the Hungarian poet Sándor Weöres and the ancient Indian Jayadeva also play a central role. The soloist recites short words and has the drums ‘repeat’ them. An emotional dialogue ensues, with a question-and-answer game between the soloist, his instruments and the orchestra. The cycle, which is an important part of piano literature and which Chopin composed between 1827 and 1846, was presented to the public by various students of Prof. Michail Lifits' piano class at the Weimar University of Music in December 2023. The students' artistic personalities should not be aligned with each other, but rather emphasise and express their individual strengths. “Chopin made the soul of the piano sing. The cellist has won prizes at 16 competitions throughout Europe. She has performed with Concerto Budapest, the Hungarian Radio Orchestra, the Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Since 2018 she has been studying in Weimar in the class of Prof. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. She has been teaching chamber music at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar since October 2023. Dmitri Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2 in G minor op. 126 is a striking work from the late phase of his oeuvre. Contrary to traditional forms, the work begins with a slow, mournful first movement, while the second, fast-paced movement leads directly into the third movement with a horn fanfare. Ostinate rhythms and semitonally progressing melodies draw the audience into a dark, captivating world of sound. In contrast to the first cello concerto, which is one of the most popular instrumental concertos of the 20th century, the second cello concerto is rarely performed. This is not least due to some of the subtleties that the piece has to offer. The university orchestra is one of the most excellent ensembles in its category in Germany. The outer movements map out origin and return, while the inner movements reflect life – the life of P. I. Tchaikovsky? The introduction opens, like a melancholy life review, with a first theme full of sighing metaphors, driven by restlessness, until it culminates in a yearning song as the second theme: fate, love – and death, because both themes are intertwined with the Russian Orthodox liturgy for the deceased in the development section. Inevitability establishes itself as the motto of the first movement, of the entire symphony. With its sobbing fabric of sound, the final movement, Adagio lamentoso, embraces its spiritual twin, the opening movement. Muted horns usher in the inevitable, a tam-tam stroke and a trombone chorale seal the return to the Office of the Dead. Claudio Arrau, who was taught by Liszt's student Martin Krause, believed that the Ballade was based on the Greek myth of Hero and Leander. He interpreted the work's chromatic ostinati as a representation of the sea: ‘You can really feel how the journey becomes more difficult each time. On the fourth night, he drowns. The last pages are a transfiguration.’ The Ballade is essentially built around two central themes: an expansive opening melody, accompanied by foreboding chromatic sounds in the lower register and a radiant chordal meditation. Both are repeated a half-step lower, whereupon march-like triplet rhythms unleash a wave of virtuosity. Finally, Liszt transforms the opening theme into a spirited major variation, which expands with ever-greater jubilation. Luminous harmonies provide a contemplative conclusion to the work. Liszt's Ballade is played by 14-year-old Justus Friedrich Eichhorn, a student of Prof. Grigory Gruzman. He was accepted as a junior student at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT at the age of ten, and has been attending the Music High School Schloss Belvedere since the 5th grade. His first teachers were Helene and Sebastian Roth in Weimar. Justus has won first prizes in numerous competitions, including the Carl Bechstein Competition in Berlin, the International Manhattan Competition, the Vienna Music Competition and the national Jugend Musiziert competition. He has also been awarded the Elba Festival Prize and the Swiss Charity Award at the Tonhalle Zurich and was twice invited to the Verbier Festival Academy. Justus has performed with the Moscow Soloists under the direction of Yuri Bashmet, the Lviv Philharmonic, Korean Chamber Orchestra, Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester, Klassische Philharmonie Bonn, Vogtland Philharmonie, Praga Camerata, and Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, among others, and has performed in venues such as the Seoul Arts Center, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, and Tonhalle Zurich. No original examples of the so-called ‘Muselaar’ are playable or restorable. That is why Bernhard Klapprott, Professor of Historical Keyboard Instruments at the Department of Early Music at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and multiple CD award winner, had an instrument built by masters of their craft – and presented these unique sound worlds on Friday, 5 May 2023 in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus of the Weimar Music University. The concert programme, entitled ‘John come kiss me now’, featured music from the time of William Shakespeare. It included works from the 16th and 17th centuries from England and the Netherlands by William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, John Bull and Giles Farnaby. Farnaby's ‘Alman’ was interpreted by Prof. Klapprott and Yin-Li Lo on the double muselaar. The Muselaar is a replica of an original instrument by Joannes Ruckers (Antwerp) from 1623, built by Cornelis and Hubregt Bom and Hans Nieuwenhuijzen from Schoonhoven in the Netherlands. Famous painters such as Jan Vermeer depicted it, and important composers such as Byrd, Bull and Sweelinck wrote numerous works for this instrument, which is extremely rare to hear today: the Muselaar. It is a rectangular keyboard instrument with horizontal strings, whose keyboard is positioned on the right, unlike the virginal. As with the harpsichord or spinet, the strings are plucked by so-called quills. It is characterised by a particularly intense, warm, somewhat bell-like sound. The instrument presented in Weimar is a double muselaar, a so-called mother-child muselaar with a large mother instrument in ‘normal’ pitch and a small child instrument that sounds an octave higher. The ‘child’ lies in the ‘mother’ instrument, in the ‘mother's belly’, and can be removed so that both can be played individually. However, they can also be coupled, so that they sound together. What is inaudible in the original today was popular in Flanders and England between around 1550 and around 1650. Bernhard Klapprott performs internationally as a harpsichordist, clavichord player, organist and conductor. Several of his CD recordings on historical keyboard instruments have been awarded the ‘Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik’ and the ‘ECHO Klassik’. His teaching activities have also taken him to masterclasses and guest lectures in Europe and the USA. The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar is an excellent, internationally oriented music academy in the European Cultural City of Weimar (Germany).

It was the superstar of the 19th century, the great pianist, composer and pedagogue Franz Liszt who first had the idea of establishing a school of music in Weimar. Today, about 850 students from around 50 countries are offered a broad selection of subjects in performance, music pedagogy and musicology. The modern musician in the role of an ensemble player is the focus of training, whether active in a classical symphony orchestra, a choir, a big band, working in high schools or in management, or performing as orchestra musician, chamber musician or music educator.
