You will walk away feeling purrrfectly smooth... <video> Stirring Your Wax Description: Stirring your wax consistently is extremely important to remember when you're both waxing your clients at a salon as well as if you’re just waxing yourself at home. Not sure why this is? Keep in mind, when you warm your wax in a wax warmer, the only part of the wax that is touching the wax warmer is the outside walls as well as the bottom of the warmer. Other than that, the wax in the center warmer doesn’t actually touch anything warm. So in order to keep the entire pot of wax warm, you need to stir your wax, and stir it often! If you don’t stir your wax but every 15 minutes or so, the top level and center of your wax is going to get cooler than the outside layer and the bottom layer of the wax. This will cause the top of the wax to start hardening so if you dip your stick in your wax, it will get stuck and you won’t be able to get the correct amount of wax. If you stir your wax consistently (at least every couple minutes), you will be able to regulate the consistency of your wax so much easier. All it takes is a quick stir of your wax pot and it will save you so much time in the end. There’s nothing worse than starting a wax appointment and realizing the consistency of your wax isn’t correct, whether it being too warm or too cool. So stay on top of it and you’ll thank me later! Description: Curious what’s the most painful place to wax? Or maybe you’re interested in getting a wax but you're nervous that where you want to get waxed will be really painful? Not all waxing is equal so I’m going to go over the most painful places to get waxed on your body. First up, the Brazilian Wax. Yes, a Brazilian Wax is painful. There are a ton of nerve endings down there and especially the first time you wax, it’s not going to be fun. However, IT GETS BETTER! Waxing is amazing because every time you wax, hair follicles get killed off so less hair comes back each time. I’ve now been getting waxed for over 14 years and I only have about 1/16th the amount of hair that I did before I started waxing. You just have to stick with it! Additionally, the pain from the wax only hurts for a second or two. We remove the wax strips very fast so you’ll only feel a pinch of pain for a second and then it stops. I also like to put pressure on the area that I just removed the strip from because this always helps. Just like when you stub your toe or bang your elbow, what do you do? Grab the part of your body that hurts! Well, it works the same for waxing. So many of my clients have confirmed that putting pressure immediately on the area that was just waxed helps tremendously. So once you get through the first Brazilian Wax, the second one will be so much easier and less painful. Next, the upper lip. If you’ve ever seen one of my videos where I wax my upper lip, then you KNOW I absolutely hate it. I’d much rather wax my own brazilian than wax my upper lip, ha! But just like the Brazilian, there are so many nerve endings on your upper lip so even though it’s a super small area, it’s not fun to get waxed. Luckily, it’s only two main strips and two clean up strips and you’re all done! Super quick. Personally, I don’t think the upper lip ever gets easier, but since it’s so quick, I would still absolutely recommend doing it. But keep in mind, no touching after waxing your upper lip! I’ve always had this strong desire to touch my face after getting it waxed but this can introduce bacteria, infection, dirt, etc which is the last thing you want getting in your freshly waxed pores. Third, the back of the neck. This area really surprised me with how much it hurt to get waxed. The one and only time I waxed the back of my neck was way back when I used to work at European Wax Center. One of the other waxers told me I should try it and that it wasn’t that painful. I said sure and let her wax me. HOLY MOLY! For whatever reason, that was super painful, so much so that I never wanted to do it again. What was worse was that for the rest of the day, I kept forgetting that I had my neck waxed. My skin was irritated since it was the first (and only) time I had that waxed, so it itches a little bit. Because I kept forgetting that I had my neck waxed, I would constantly scratch my neck, which would then cause me to yelp in pain. I then realized that the other waxer was trying to be funny by baiting me into it… jerk. Lastly, the legs. Now, the entire leg isn’t bad or that painful to get waxed. Part of what isn’t fun about waxing your legs is that they are such a large area, and you have TWO of them. So the amount of time overall that you’re getting waxed is so much longer than any other body part, which makes it more painful. The worst part of the legs would be around the ankles and behind the knees. Don’t ask me why, I honestly couldn’t tell you. Luckily, less hair grows back with each wax so leg waxing does get much easier if you stick with it. Description: First of all, we should define what waxing is. Waxing is a process of removing the hair from the root by using a sticky substance (wax) which is applied on top of the body hair and is then removed. When the wax is removed, the hair gets stuck inside the wax so the hair will be pulled from the root. So the big question - is waxing painful? Short answer, yes waxing is painful. Waxing is a longer term solution to hair removal when compared to shaving. With waxing, we’re pulling the hair from the root which means it won’t grow back for weeks. This is the biggest benefit of waxing. While with shaving, you’re only cutting off the hair at the base of the skin so it will grow back immediately. Going through a short amount of pain to not have to deal with hair for a month seems like a small price to pay. Luckily, the pain only lasts for a second or two! This sounds crazy but it’s true. Once the wax strip is removed, you’ll feel a slight pinch or sting, but it will go away just as fast as it came. It also helps if your waxing puts pressure on the area that was just waxed immediately after she removes the wax strip. Just like stubbing your toe, if you put pressure on the area, it helps minimize the pain and helps it go away. Waxing also gets less painful the longer you’ve been getting waxed. This is because waxing kills off hair follicles so each time you wax, less hair comes back. Huge bonus! Otherwise, your skin will be dry and sensitive during your wax and can damage the skin. For a spray tan, always go at least 24 hours after your waxing appointment. If you get a spray tan prior to getting waxed, the wax will remove the spray tan from your skin. Don’t put on lotion or makeup prior to your appointment - The wax won’t be able to adhere to the hair if there is lotion or make up in the way. Your Esthetician will have to remove all the lotion and make up anyway, so why not make it easier for her and don’t wear it from the beginning. Don’t take a hot bath, shower, sauna or go swimming after your appointment - The heat from the shower, sauna, bath, etc will irritate your skin and can introduce breakouts from bacteria. Don’t go to the gym following your appointment. - Wait 24 hours until going to the gym. Sweat can cause bacterial infections to freshly waxed skin. Don’t apply deodorant within at least 6 hours after your appointment, the next day is best - This only applies to underarms waxes. If you can wait until the next day, that’s preferred to ensure the deodorant doesn’t clog the open pores. Don’t shave in between appointments - This is huge! Shaving in between appointments will mess up your hair growth cycle. It can also call ingrown hairs and itching so just stick with your regular waxing appointments which should be every 3-6 weeks. Don’t wear tight fitting clothing - Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes like leggings or skinny jeans. Since they’re so tight on the skin, they can potentially cause a rash. Don’t touch freshly waxed skin - your hair follicles are now open and can easily get infected if exposed to bacteria. Wait at least 24 hours before touching your waxed skin. Don’t go to a nail salon - Please, please, please don’t go to a nail salon! Most of them don’t care about being sanitary and will double dip wax sticks. They are not specialized in waxing and can do serious damage to you. Do: Do grow your hair at least 1/4in - Hair needs to be at least 1/4th of an inch long (or about the length of a grain of rice) in order for the wax to be able to adhere to it and pull it out from the root. Otherwise, the wax will break the hair at the surface. Do exfoliate within 48 hours before appointment - Exfoliating is important to ensure you remove any dead skin on the surface. This is especially important for leg and brazilian waxing where hairs can easily get stuck underneath the skin which means they can’t get waxed out. Do ensure your Esthetician is aware of medications you are taking - This is important to ensure there are no contraindications with waxing. There are a handful of medications that will cause your skin to “thin out” which can cause skin lifting. Be aware of medications like Retin A, Accutane, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, chemical peels, antibiotics, etc. Do shower prior to your appointment - Always shower before your waxing appointment to ensure the wax can adhere to the hair. If you have lotion, dirt, oil, make up or sweat on your body, the wax won’t be able to remove the hair properly. Do wear loose fitting clothes to your appointment - Make sure you wear loose fitting clean clothes, dress, skirt, sweatpants, loose jeans, cotton underwear, etc. Something breathable is best. You want as little friction as possible to ensure your skin doesn’t get irritated. Do wax every 3-6 weeks - Anything before 3 weeks will risk the hair not being long enough and getting snapped. Anything longer than 6 weeks will put you at risk of the hair also getting snapped and not being able to pull anything from the root. Do go to a reputable salon - How does their website look? Do they even have a website? Does it look professional and knowledgeable? Is it easy to book appointments? Whether it’s online or by phone or text? It’s definitely a good sign if it takes a bit to get in for an appointment. That means they know what they’re doing if they’re so busy with clients. Very good sign! How are they’re reviews? Do they have a lot? Are they on different platforms? Google, Facebook, Yelp, etc. But reviews are a big way to find a good salon. If someone had a bad experience, you can bet they’re going to write about it! Or maybe you just started getting waxed and don’t know how often you should make an appointment? This can be a tricky question because not everybody is exactly the same, but I’ll go over the most common general rule of thumb for how long waxing will last. Waxing is a phenomenal service because it will last so much longer than shaving. When you shave, it will only feel smooth for the day (sometimes only part of the day) because you’re cutting the hair off at the surface of the skin. Because the hair is getting cut off at the surface, the hair immediately grows back. However, when you get waxed, it will last so much longer. The reason waxing lasts so much longer than shaving is because the wax will remove the hair from the root, leaving no hair behind. This results in feeling smooth for weeks, instead of only for the day. When you first start getting waxed, your hair growth cycles are going to be all over the place. This is because you either have been shaving your whole life, or you just haven’t been doing any maintenance until now. Because your hair growth cycles are not synced up yet, don’t be surprised if/when you feel random hairs popping up a week after your appointment. This is completely normal! It will take a couple of waxes for your hair growth cycles to sync up with one another. Once they do, you will remain hair free for about 2 weeks. Most people will be ready to wax every 4 weeks, but I always say anytime between 3-6 weeks is your safe zone to get waxed. If you try to get waxed earlier than 3 weeks, the wax won’t be able to adhere to the hair and can’t be removed from the root. If you wait longer than 6 weeks to get waxed, you’ll most likely encounter multiple hair growth cycles so the wax might not come out smooth and can also hurt more. If the hair is longer than 1/4th an inch, the wax can start to pull on the hair which gets uncomfortable. Another thing that is great about waxing is that waxing will kill some of your hair follicles. The result of this is less hair will grow back each time you wax. I’ve been getting waxed for about 14 years now and I only have around 1/16th of the hair that I used to have. That’s because I’ve been waxing continuously for so long that most of my hair doesn’t grow back anymore. Additionally, the hair that does grow back will be softer and finer due to it being a brand new baby hair. So when it does grow back, it won’t be nearly as annoying or hurt as much to be removed again during your next waxing session. It can get confusing knowing what type of services are customary to tip and which ones’ aren’t. I’ve had so many customers ask what’s a good tip or if people tip at all, so I’m going to clear the air. Not sure how much to tip for a wax? I can help! In short, generally yes it is customary to tip your waxer or esthetician. Personally, I always tip anyone who works in the service industry. However, I also have some advice on this. If you’re going to a waxing salon that is a big chain (for example European Wax Center, Waxing The City, etc), I definitely recommend tipping your waxer. Waxers at these big chain companies survive on tips. I used to work at European Wax Center and I only made $8 an hour, 4% on each service, plus some small bonuses that they tried to make difficult to hit. They also always had more waxers scheduled than they actually needed. This was because if a walk in customer came in, they wanted to have an open time slot at any time. Unfortunately, it made it hard for your books to ever be fully booked, unless it was a holiday of course since those times are always filled. So if I had 4 brazilians scheduled for that hour, I would have made $8 + $2+ $2+ $2+ $2 =$16.00 Think about that, $16 to wax 4 people (every 15 minutes). That’s the best case scenario and assuming no one tips you. However, European Wax Center also offers wax passes and from my experience, at least 50-75% of people have a wax pass since it’s so much cheaper per service. So that 4% per service gets cut in half because it breaks down to the average cost of the wax with the wax pass. This means, instead of $2 per brazilian, it can go down to $1. Not good. When I first started waxing, I once waxed a woman’s entire body: full face, underarms, arms, stomach, brazilian, full legs, full butt. It took me around 3 hours and she didn’t tip me once she left. I cried. Now, tipping can be different if you’re going to someone who works for themselves/owns their own salon. Personally, I made all my service pricing thinking that I wouldn’t get a tip and I was completely fine with that. I never expected a tip, but if I got one, great! If they own their own salon, they get to take all the money from the service, less the cost of rent, wax and other materials, marketing, etc. But in general, they’re making a lot more than just $8 an hour and 4% on services. I still found that 98% of my customers left a tip after their service. If you do want to tip, 10%-20% is normal. Now my hair girl, I give her like a 50% tip but I only see her every 3-4 months and I love her and don’t trust anyone with my hair so obviously that isn’t a normal tip. Overall, do what makes you comfortable! But if you go to a large chain, please tip the waxers! They don’t get paid what they deserve. Don’t feel bad, this can be very confusing because so many companies have different names for their bikini waxes. I’m going to break it down and explain the main different kinds of bikini waxes so you can make the best choice for you. Bikini Line 1. A bikini line wax is removing the hair that would show outside of a bikini bottom. Personally, I use my hand as a good rule of thumb for how far down the bikini line (the inner thigh) I will wax. You also want to make sure you wax the hair that is on the crease of the bikini line because if you miss that area, the hair will poke out when they put a bikini bottom on. 2. The bikini line wax also includes a small strip across the top of the bikini area. Again, this is to ensure no hair is sticking out when wearing a bikini bottom. 3. Lastly, most wax companies won’t do this but I will also wax the small area on the butt cheek (assuming the client has hair). I’ve realized that if you don’t wax that area, the minute the customer opens their legs even a little bit, hair will stick out. Bikini Full 1. A bikini full wax is when you remove as little or as much hair as you want off the front of the bikini area, however you do not wax the butt strip. This means, you can remove all the hair and go completely bare, or opt to leave a triangle or a strip on the top of the bikini area. 2. I’ve also had some clients who want to remove everything on their labia, however keep all the hair up top. Or I’ve had clients who want to remove the hair on the outside of the labia, but keep the hair towards the middle. 3. Some companies call a bikini full a French Wax. Brazilian Wax 1. A brazilian wax is when you wax everything from the front of the bikini area, as well as the butt strip in the back. Again, you can opt to leave a triangle or landing strip if you don’t want to remove all the hair from the front. 2. A butt strip wax is getting all the hair waxed between the cheeks. 3. A brazilian wax can sometimes be called a Hollywood Wax. As an Esthetician, make sure you ALWAYS ask your client if they want to leave any hair for the bikini full and brazilian wax service. Once you lay a wax strip, it’s near impossible to remove without removing hair. Your only possible option would be to use a cleansing oil and try to remove the wax. What is the most popular bikini wax between these three options? In my experience of being a waxer for over 12 years, the brazilian wax is definitely the most popular type of bikini wax. I’ve also noticed that from the brazilian wax, most people will remove all the hair and not leave a strip or a triangle. However, this is always based on personal preference and there is no wrong way to get waxed. It’s your body so make sure you do whatever makes you happy. However, no one really talks about how to handle scheduling your clients and the best way to go about that. So many companies offer online booking, which is very convenient as it makes scheduling super quick and easy for the customer. However, when you’re just starting out and don’t have a lot of clients, the last thing you want to do is have wide open books. This can cause clients to schedule on the opposite times of the day, leaving you having to wait around all day, or even having to go in for only one client for the entire day. First things first, I recommend having two separate cell phones. One for personal, and one for business. This will help you be able to put your business phone away after business hours so you don’t get tempted to respond to someone if they text you at 11pm in the evening. It will also help you with scheduling your customers because you can talk or text on one phone, and look at your schedule on the other phone. This helped me out so much. Now onto scheduling: If you’re open between 10-6p, someone might book an appointment at 11a, then someone else might book at 5p the same day. This will leave you having to wait around all day just for that last appointment, hoping you get a walk in or another client will schedule the same day. That didn’t sound like a good idea to me so I decided to do things differently. Instead, I forced all clients to have to schedule through me. This can sound daunting, but it allows you to control your schedule 100% and will benefit you in more ways than one. A client could either call or text me and if I couldn’t answer immediately, I would get back to them as soon as possible (either same day or the next day if they contacted me outside of business hours). If you’re with a client or have back to back clients and someone calls or texts, you can respond to them with a quick text after your client leaves. Most of the time, it’s easy to swiftly go through your messages to schedule someone new in between clients. When a client would call or text to schedule an appointment, I would ask them what days worked best, and what is their preferred time to come in. Then depending on their answer, I could look at the appointments I already had on my books for that week, and then offer them 2-3 different available times/dates. Even if I was technically available from 9-7p, Monday-Friday, I would try my best to alternate how I scheduled my appointments, having some only in the morning/early afternoon on some days, and some only in the evening. For example, say I already had a clients scheduled on a Tuesday at 4p, Wednesday at 10a, and Thursday at 2p. Then if a new client wanted to come in for an afternoon appointment, I would offer the new client a Tuesday appointment at 4:30p or 5p, or Thursday at 1:30p or 3p appointment. That way, if I couldn’t get another appointment to fill in the empty appointments, I would only have to wait an hour max for the last appointment. If they said none of those times worked, I would either tell them I could “squeeze them in” at another time or say my next opening would be the following week. I know, this sounds scary to do. But by doing this, it also gives your clients the illusion that you have a lot more clients than you actually might have, which makes them want to book with you more. It also lets them know that if they don’t schedule now, they might not get in at all. Even if you’re just starting out, it can make someone uncomfortable if they go online to schedule an appointment and all the spots are available, or they see you only have a couple of appointments that are taken. We all want what we can’t have, we all desire things that other people desire. So by only giving someone a couple of available appointments, it makes your clients think that you are super booked and make them feel that if they don’t schedule with you now, they won’t be able to get in for a while. I also recommend really trying to enforce your client to schedule their next appointment before they leave. When they do this, I will do the same thing. Only offer a small handful of appointments, so again, it looks like your schedule is already filling up, even though it’s a month away. THIS WORKED SO WELL. Within a short period of time of opening my salon, my books quickly started to fill up. Additionally, it will get to a point when you can start being more lenient with what appointment times to offer. The busier you get, you can start pushing the offered times to two hours out from an already scheduled appointment, instead of just one. This is because you already know that you’re going to end up filling the time in between with appointments. This is something that doesn’t seem to be talked about as much as it should, but proper pressure is a very important step when applying a wax strip. First, I’ll explain why using enough pressure is important. The goal with waxing is to remove the hair from the root. In order to do that, you need the wax to get as close to the base of the hair as possible. If you don’t get the wax as close to the base of the hair as possible, you run the risk of snapping the hair and the hair not being removed at all. The main reason why people don’t use enough pressure when spreading a wax strip is they either don’t understand why pressure is important, or they are concerned they’re going to hurt their client. I hear this all the time, so many people are scared that they are going to hurt their client if they apply too much pressure, but I guarantee you that you are not hurting them. The only way you would hurt them is if you jab the stick into their skin which is something we would never do. Let me show you the difference between a wax strip with one where not enough pressure is used, and the second strip where the correct amount of pressure is used. In this first wax strip, you’ll see that I’m spreading the wax lightly on my skin. You can tell that I’m not using a lot of pressure because my skin underneath isn’t moving at all. This is not a good sign because the wax isn’t going to get as good of a grip on the hair. In this second wax strip, I’m going to apply the correct amount of pressure. You’ll see my skin is slightly pulling underneath the wax strip, but not so much where you’re forcing it. The wax should glide on smoothly and evenly. This will ensure that the wax is fully adhering to the base of the hair and should be able to be pulled out from the root properly. Description: Can you wax while pregnant? I’ve been asked this question more times than I can count so I’m here to help. Pregnancy is such an exciting time and your body goes through all kinds of changes. Your hormones are going to change while pregnant and one of those changes is an increase in hair on your head and body. Extra hair growing on your head, great! Extra hair growing on your body, not so great. Fortunately, you can wax it! A lot of women also want to wax while pregnant because a point in time is going to come when you won’t be able to see “down there” anymore. And who wants to ask their significant other to help them shave!? First, if you’re interested or trying to get pregnant, I definitely recommend starting to get waxed before you get pregnant, if possible. Obviously, sometimes getting pregnant is a surprise so it's definitely not something you can always control. But if you’re actively trying, I absolutely recommend you start waxing beforehand. This will help your hair get all on the same hair growth cycle and thin out your hair which will make your waxes less painful. Waxing while pregnant is generally considered safe. I’ve waxed TONS of pregnant clients, all the way up until they delivered. Because of the extra hormones pregnant women experience, they tend to grow more hair which, obviously, can make waxing tend to hurt more. But if you stick with it and consistently get waxed every 4 weeks or so, this will help make each wax much easier to tolerate. Your body is also producing extra blood and fluid to help support your growing baby. Because of this, the extra blood can make your skin more sensitive than it usually is. I also recommend bringing a pillow during your waxing appointment. This will help prop your back so you’re not laying flat on your back with a pregnant belly, which can cause discomfort. It’s safe to wax all the way up to your due date, but I would definitely be more cautious within the last two weeks of your due date. I actually had a woman who called me on her way to the doctor because her water just broke and she wanted to get waxed real quick before she gave birth. Unfortunately, by that time it was too late to get waxed. I would recommend scheduling your last waxing appointment around two weeks before your due date, just in case. Always be open and honest with your waxer so even if you’re in the early stages of pregnancy, your waxer should know! Cleaning and sanitizing your tweezers and eyebrow scissors between clients (as well as if you’re only using them on yourself) is very important and should never be skipped. You don’t want to cross contamin any of your clients with bacteria or infections by not cleaning your utensils between each of your clients. However, sanitizing your utensils is very quick and easy. There are two main methods to do this so I’m going to go over both of them with you. Barbicide. This is what I do when I’m waxing my clients at my salon. You’ll need a couple of items; a glass jar, barbicide and water. I use this barbicide jar because it’s so easy to clean your utensils. You just pull the lid up and then put your utensils in the bottom level, then lower into the jar. Then to remove, pull the lid back up and you can easily grab your utensils. I also recommend having at least 2 pairs of tweezers and scissors in your salon. This is just in case you wax faster than 10 minutes and need to use your utensils before they’re done getting sanitized. It helps to get your utensils in different colors so you know which ones you used during your last appointment. Fill your glass jar with 32 ounces of water. Add 2 ounces of barbicide to your waxer and mix well. This can be done by pulling the lid up and down in the jar. Drop your tweezers, eyebrow scissors and other utensils into the holder. Keep the utensils in there for at least 10 minutes before removing. Remove and let air dry. All done! Rubbing Alcohol. I use this when I’m waxing myself or any family at home (so I’m not in my salon). Wipe the entire surface area of the tweezers with rubbing alcohol using a cotton ball or paper towel. Be careful and ensure you coat both the tips and the grip of the utensils fully. Personally, I like to lay down a paper towel and spray the rubbing alcohol on the tweezers over the paper towel and then wipe them down with another paper towel. Then I’ll place them on top of the paper towel and flip them in 5 minutes. Once I do that, I’ll wipe them down one more time and then put them away. Make sure you store your tweezers and utensils in a clean and dry sealed container so moisture and dust can’t enter. This can result in an allergic reaction. Some people can get a histamine reaction after waxing as a result of trauma to the skin, causing them to get redness, blotchy red spots or hives on their skin. Symptoms can last anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days. How can you treat a histamine reaction? I recommend cleaning the skin and then applying cortisone cream to help reduce inflammation, soothe the skin and hydrate the skin. You can also apply fragrance free moisturizers such as aloe vera gel which will also help soothe the skin and reduce inflammation. How can you avoid a histamine reaction? There’s a couple of things you can do to help try to avoid a histamine reaction. First, I always recommend using a high quality hypoallergenic hard wax. Hard wax itself is much safer on the skin since it doesn’t adhere to the skin, only the hair. Soft wax adheres to the skin so you can only go over an area one time, otherwise you can damage the skin. However, not all hard waxes are created equal. Most hard waxes contain Colophonium (Rosin) which is a known allergen and can cause reactions. Using a hypoallergenic hard wax means it’s allergen free, so it does not contain Colophonium or any other known allergens. I also recommend taking an antihistamine before your waxing appointment. This will just help block the histamines and keep the chance of you getting symptoms low. Lastly, after your wax appointment, make sure you don’t go swimming, sweat, work out, take a hot bath, or have sex for 24 hours after your waxing appointment. It’s important to keep the skin clean after getting waxed to help avoid any kind of bacteria or infection from entering the open hair follicles. I can help! We all know that getting waxed isn’t the most fun thing to do. So how can you help deal with the pain you endure while getting waxed? There are multiple things you can do to help make your waxing experience more comfortable. You can take some kind of pain reliever like Ibuprofen or Tylenol. This will help minimize the pain during your waxing appointment. Be sure to take it at least an hour before the appointment to ensure it kicks in. Don’t wax around your period (for bikini area waxes). Naturally, your bikini area is going to be more sensitive when you’re around or on your menstrual cycle. So if possible, it helps to avoid waxing during this time. Stay on schedule. This is huge for waxing! Stick to a schedule and get waxed every 3-6 weeks. By staying on schedule, you’ll get your hair growth all on the same cycle so all the hair will come out at once, and you’ll stay smooth longer. Additionally, this will help you not be tempted to shave between waxing appointments which will royally screw up your waxing progress. Don’t try to wax too early or too late. I recommend trying to stick to 3-6 weeks between waxing appointments. If you wax too early, the wax won’t be able to adhere to the hair properly and can’t pull the hair out which will hurt more. If you wax too late, the hair will be longer and you risk the wax getting stuck in the hair if it can’t reach the hair at the base. Use a numbing cream. I’ve never personally used a numbing cream, but I’ve had clients use it and they swore by it. Just make sure you put it on early enough so it starts numbing you before the appointment starts. Don’t drink alcohol and avoid caffeine. I know, it seems like taking a shot of alcohol would be hugely beneficial before your waxing appointment. I get it! However, alcohol and caffeine and stimulants which cause the skin to become more sensitive, thus more painful. Alcohol can also cause your pores to tighten which can make it harder for the wax to be removed from the hair follicle. Exfoliate! One or two days before your appointment, make sure you exfoliate the area you are getting waxed. This can be as easy as using a wet cloth in the shower. Exfoliating will remove the dead skin cells on the outermost layer of the skin which helps the wax adhere to the hair better. Talk during your appointment. Talking helps distract yourself! I have had some of the best conversations in my life while talking to my client as I’m waxing them. I have always felt that my clients are my family because of how well we get to know each other while I’m waxing them once a month. So don’t be shy, your waxer wants to talk to you too! Or should you wait until after? These are great questions to ask and definitely need to be addressed before your waxing appointment. First, there are two types of tanning: Laying in a bed or outside in the sun Sunless tanning by a spray tan or a self rub on tanner In general, waxing before you tan is a great thing. It’s important to exfoliate before you tan (at least for a spray tan or self tanner) so you ensure the lotion or spray will go on smoothly. Since waxing is a natural exfoliant, it’s perfect to do before you tan. Being an Esthetician, I have to say first and foremost, please NEVER lay in a tanning bed. I used to do this often back in high school and even college. I have super pale skin and loved looking tan so I used to love going to a tanning salon and cooking my skin. I used to tell myself that if I “fake bake” then my chance of burning when being outside would decrease. False. I would get a sunburn anyway. So please, please, please, don’t go to a tanning salon and lay in a tanning bed. Ok, back on topic, IF, and that’s a big IF, you’re going to lay in a tanning bed or lay outside in the sun, please don’t do so for at least 48 hours prior to your waxing appointment. Waxing is a natural exfoliant and tanning will dry your skin out. The last thing you want is for the wax to adhere to your skin because it’s so dry and then accidentally pull off the top layers of your skin. Now, this is why I only use hard wax (hard wax is much safer and easier on the skin since it only adheres to your hair, not the skin). However, if you have very dry skin, even hard wax can remove multiple layers of skin. I would also recommend waiting at least 48 hours after your waxing appointment before you use a tanning bed or lay in the skin. This is to ensure your skin and hair follicles have fully healed/sealed so you’re not introducing bacteria or infection to your freshly waxed skin. Sunless tanning like a spray tan or self run on tanner is different. You definitely don’t want to get a spray tan before your waxing appointment. If you do, the wax is going to remove the spray tan. I can’t tell you how many clients I have had come in after getting a spray tan the day prior. I had to tell them that unfortunately, anywhere I wax is going to take off that layer of tan and it’s going to make them look weird. So, if you’re going to get a spray tan or use a self tanner, please wait until after your appointment! I recommend at least 24 hours after getting waxed to tan yourself. You don’t have to wait 48 hours like with a tanning bed because a spray tan or rub on tanner isn’t going to damage or “cook” your skin like a tanning bed will. So, long story short, always wax FIRST, and tan SECOND.
