Our unwavering dedication to intellectual exchange, multidisciplinary teamwork and innovation propels us ever forward in discoveries and advances to improve the human condition. <video> Ethics on Wearables Devices in Occupational Health Surveillance and Research Description: This past installment of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine grand rounds, on Friday, January 10, 2025, focused on the ethics of wearables devices in occupational Health as described by Karel Van Damme, MD. Karel Van Damme, MD, is an occupational health physician, who started his career as a labor inspector in Belgium. He was involved in the elaboration of European Union legislative regulations on occupational health protection. He was a personal advisor to several Belgian ministers of work. He is also a former chair of the board of the Belgian Compensation Fund for Occupational Diseases, which consisted of ‘social partners’, representing the national employers and trade union organizations. He is currently president of the Belgian ‘High Council on Prevention and Protection at Work’, which is a key body in negotiating legislation in this domain. Dr. Van Damme has lectured internationally on OSH and serves as an external expert for the International Labor Organization. His most current research related to a critical analysis of the use of genetic testing of workers, also as lead of European research projects on this issue. Bansal, MD. Dr. Meena Bansal joined the faculty at Mount Sinai in 2001. She received her medical degree and trained in Internal Medicine at Cornell University and completed her Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2002 she became the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Director, in 2013 Director of Translational Research in the Division of Liver Diseases, and in 2015 Chief Medical Officer of Mount Sinai Care LLC and Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Mount Sinai Health Partners. While remaining clinically active, she has also developed an NIH-funded basic research program focusing on understanding underlying molecular mechanisms of liver fibrosis/cirrhosis in an effort to develop novel anti-fibrotic therapies. Her current research interests focus on how HIV may promote hepatic inflammation and fibrosis as well as novel treatments for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). She is the principal investigator in a number of clinical trials for the treatment of Hepatitis C and MASH. </video> <video> Fall 2024 Vaccine Update: Patients 50 Years and Older Description: This past installment of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine grand rounds, on Friday 13-December-2024, focused vaccine updates as described by Rachel Chasan, MD, MPH. Rachel Chasan, MD, MPH, obtained her medical degree and MPH from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and stayed on at Mount Sinai for Internal Medicine residency, including a year as a chief medical resident, and Infectious Diseases fellowship. She has been faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases here since 2012, is an Associate Professor of Medicine, and is currently the director of Antimicrobial Stewardship for Mount Sinai Hospital as well as the Quality Improvement lead for the division.
