We have selected several of our key academic research works done in the past 15 years, to be introduced in this talk. We will recall the Aha! moments, and also talk about the technical logic flow behind them. Then, we would like to share some of our paper writing guidelines, skills, considerations and suggestions for the first-time paper writing students. Yan Lu (Senior Member, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree in electronic and computer engineering from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong, China, in 2013. From 2014 to 2024, he was with the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI, University of Macau, Macau, China. On July 1st, 2024, He joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, as a Full Professor with the endowed Xing-Hua Chair Professorship. He has authored/coauthored about 200 peer-reviewed technical articles and two books. His research interests include high-density power converters, integrated voltage regulators, wireless power transfer and energy-harvesting circuits and systems. Dr. Lu has served as an ITPC Member (2020-2024) for ISSCC, as a TPC Member and then the Power Management Subcommittee Chair for CICC (2019-2024), and an IEEE SSCS Distinguished Lecturer (2022–2023). He has served as a Guest Editor for the IEEE JSSC in 2022, 2023 and 2024, for the IEEE TCAS-I in 2019, and for the IEEE TCAS-II in 2018 and 2019. Learning to use the right number of digits is easy. In this webinar, Dr. Chris Mangelsdorf will discuss the importance of selecting the right amount of digits in your results and reports. Biography: Chris Mangelsdorf (S’77 – M’84) received a B.S. in physics, magna cum laude, from Davidson College, Davidson, NC in 1977. In 1980 and 1984, he received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering at M.I.T. where he held the first Analog Devices Fellowship. He has been associated with Analog Devices since summer employment in 1980 and has been a Fellow of Analog Devices since 1998. From 1996 to 2013, Dr. Mangelsdorf worked in Tokyo, running the Analog Devices Tokyo Design Center and then adding responsibility for the Shanghai and Beijing Design Centers with the title of Asia Technical Director. In 2013, he moved to the Analog Devices San Diego office, where he was engaged in the development of high speed A/D converters. In September 2020, Chris retired from Analog Devices and is now consulting and writing the “Shop Talk” series for IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine. Dr. Mangelsdorf is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Pi Sigma (physics) and has served on both the ISSCC Program Committee and the AdComm for the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society. The presentation will finish with a demonstration showing just how easy and cheap it is to get your own chip manufactured today. </video> <video> To PhD or Not to PhD, That is the Question, Hosted by SSCS Women in Circuits Description: Have you ever considered doing a PhD, or are currently a PhD student? Novices to the degree usually think of PhDs in rosy terms—imagining the respect/credibility one would get, working on cutting edge research, being awarded accolades, and being featured in magazines for one’s work! The reality is that the good parts come with some unspoken, surprising challenges; and depending on your career goals, you may have more success learning pertinent skills in the industry, and not even need a PhD. PhD students get trained on being independent researchers, developing teaching skills, proposal-writing, and other professorship responsibilities, marketing/presenting one’s work, ideas for startups and visibility to research labs in the industry/government. On the other hand, one also encounters tangible challenges of uncertain funding, inadequate mentorship, lack of work-life balance boundaries, loneliness, depression, and adverse impact on health that comes with having to deal with these on one’s own. The last few years of a PhD often offer writer’s block and publication challenges, while dealing with pressure to graduate. Good news—all challenges are surmountable—and we have put together a panel to discuss if PhD is a good fit for you, or if you’re already in deep, how to make the best use of your time as a PhD student and graduate.
