I opened my chest and showed her my scars, I told her to bring me news of my bloodthirsty Lover. As I waited, I paced back and forth, until the child of my heart became quiet. The child slept, as if I were rocking his cradle. Oh Beloved, give milk to the infant of the heart, and don't hold us from our turning. You have cared for hundreds, don't let it stop with me now. At the end, the town of unity is the place for the heart. Why do you keep this bewildered heart in this town of dissolution? Let me give you a hint: Let go of your mind and then be mindful. Close your ears and listen! It is difficult to speak to your unripeness. You may still be in your springtime, unaware that autumn exists. This world is a tree to which we cling— we, the half-ripe fruit upon it. The immature fruit clings tightly to the branch because not yet ripe, it’s unfit for the palace. When fruits become ripe, sweet, and juicy, then, biting their lips, they loosen their hold. When the mouth has been sweetened by felicity, the kingdom of the world loses its appeal. To be tightly attached to the world is immaturity. As long as you’re an embryo, all you think about is sipping blood. There’s more to be said, But let the Holy Spirit tell it. You may even tell it to your own ear. Neither I, nor some other “I,” needs to tell you, you who are also I. Just as when you fall asleep, you leave the presence of yourself to enter another presence of yourself. You hear something from yourself and imagine that someone else has secretly spoken to you in a dream. But you are not a single “you,” my friend—you are the wide sky and the deep sea. My soul is from elsewhere, I'm sure of that, and I intend to end up there. This drunkenness began in some other tavern. When I get back around to that place, I'll be completely sober. Meanwhile, I'm like a bird from another continent, sitting in this aviary. The day is coming when I fly off, but who is it now in my ear, who hears my voice? Who says words with my mouth? He made a point of writing, singing, and speaking in the true Turkish language of the day rather than adopting the Persian or Arabic speech that was prevalent in his own country, particularly amongst the sophisticated. Sufis were Muslim mystics and he has also been described as a Sufi Dervish, meaning that he practiced frenzied, very energetic dancing, probably whipping himself, and all those present, up into a state of highly religious fervor. Emre’s poetry covered subjects such as the love of divinity and human destiny, written in the traditional style of Anatolian folk-poetry.
