The average annual temperature ranges from about 14 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 10 C) to minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 60 C). There are currently 70 permanent research stations scattered across the continent of Antarctica, giving researchers many opportunities for scientific discoveries. Huw Griffiths is a marine biogeographer who spotted something by pure luck when geologists who were drilling through ice about one-half mile thick hit a boulder and caught something unexpected on camera. </video> <video> Twin Satellites Observe Earth’s Climate Description: The orbiting satellites are giving scientists insight into deep water supplies on Earth. (Inside Science) -- As we go about our daily lives, most of us are unaware that there are twin satellites orbiting Earth, tracking the movement of water around our planet. The mission, called GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO), is continuing GRACE’s legacy (the original GRACE mission orbited Earth from 2002-2017), of tracking Earth’s water movement across the planet. Monitoring changes in ice sheets and glaciers, underground water storage, the amount of water in large lakes and rivers, and changes in sea level, giving researchers a unique view of Earth’s climate. </video> <video> Bats Make Predictions on Prey Movements Description: Bats calculate where their prey is headed using their echolocation abilities. (Inside Science) -- Angie Salles, a biologist and neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins University, studies bats and their behavior. She and her colleagues trained bats to stay on a post and then watched and recorded how the bats tracked nearby insects. The bats' echolocation calls were recorded and their head movements tracked as they changed depending on where the insects moved and how quickly. The researchers also added obstacles that interrupted the echoes. The results show that bats can usually predict their dinner's future position, even when things like trees or branches get in the way. </video> <video> Antarctica A Great, Cold Natural Laboratory Description: Scientists brave one of the coldest places on Earth, and it's well worth it. (Inside Science) -- Antarctica is unlike anywhere else on Earth. It's the highest, driest, coldest and windiest continent on the planet. Its ice sheet is the largest ice store on Earth as well. Despite the continent's extreme conditions, it's also a great natural laboratory -- which is why so many scientists brave the cold to work there. Huw Griffiths is a marine biogeographer who never thought he would visit the area but ended up exploring, studying and learning new things about the vast, remote land. He grew up near the beach and wouldn't have pictured himself studying marine biology in a completely opposite climate in Antarctica. But it's paid off, because he loved it and finds new species every time he visits! </video> <video> Hakeem Oluseyi: Cultivating a Love for Science Description: In this episode Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi tells host Chris Gorski about how he fell in love with science, and how his interest grew as he went from reading everything he could get his hands on as a young person in the rural south to earning a Ph.D. in physics. Oluseyi shares stories from his book, A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars, as well as his passion for science education and inclusivity for all. </video> <video> Smartphone App Helps Spot Concussions Description: A phone app might help diagnose a concussion on many sports fields. (Inside Science) -- In sports, concussions happen. High school and college athletes suffer most often in football, ice hockey and soccer. Concussions don't always mean being "knocked out" or losing consciousness -- other symptoms include confusion, dizziness and vision problems. In sports, with a head injury, time is of the essence. Any possible concussion needs prompt attention because sometimes there's potential for a more serious injury. Now, fast help can be right at the fingertips. One way to look for signs of a concussion is to measure how the iris in the eye responds to light, and researchers have developed an app that can be used on the field to help test that. The app uses the flash on the smartphone's camera to shine light in the eye and then the camera measures the pupil dilation.
