Couples in which one or both partners have traits of Autism often struggle to find practitioners who can understand and help. Traditional approaches to working with such couples have been behavioral and limited in nature, often assuming that these relationships are doomed or that only a neurotypical partner can adapt. Through the lens of neurodiversity, a movement to de-pathologize atypical neurological wiring, we will look at applications of IFS and IFIO (Intimacy from the Inside Out) to working with mixed-neurology couples. How do we talk about this effectively? Should we keep seeing them? It is not just the client who is worried - therapists are worried, too. Do we know enough to keep working with this client? IFS can help! In this experiential workshop you will learn how to apply the IFS model to welcome and normalize common fears and polarities with the client using substances or feeling a little compulsive; how to identify and understand firefighter reasoning and positive intentions and effectively connect to 'acting out' parts; how to reach out safely to the abandoned exiles under the surface. We will also explore therapist bias and common therapist fears and how self-compassion creates good clinical connections. </video> <video> Targeting LGBTQIA Issues Within Child and Adult Connections with Carmen Jimenez-Pride Description: A child may be a member or have curiosity about the LGBTQIA community and this discovery may halt, or even destroy the narrative parents have unknowingly placed on the child. This workshop will focus on maintaining the connection between the LGBTQIA child and family with IFS and Sandtray Therapy. The importance of encouraging healthy dialogue through therapeutic interventions can be the core of establishing and renewing stable family structures. Parents have been writing the narrative of their child(ren) lives sometimes even prior to the positive pregnancy test or confirmed placement of the child in their homes or lives. Each parent attempts to imprint their versions of healthy and happy on their child’s future, which is demonstrated through their parenting techniques and demonstration of parts. Some parents may discover their child is a member of the LGBTQIA, or have curiosities about the community, and this discovery may halt, or even destroy that narrative parents have unknowingly placed on the child(ren). This is a critical time for all members of the family unit, and it is important to help parents understand and acknowledge how the prewritten narratives and extreme feelings of grief, loss, and fear can affect their parenting techniques and internal systems.
