The train is westbound and might be a late Local? (In any case it reminded me of the old Illinois Central Gulf orange engines that used to come through here). The Metra trains came first, Inbound and Outbound. Shortly after that, a eastbound freight came through. When that train's DPU's pulled next to me, another train came going the opposite direction. This watching spot is about two miles west of the Proviso Rail Yard which means that the trains at Elmhurst quite often are slowing down or throttling up. The Indianford Dam & Powerhouse are on the Rock River in Southern Wisconsin. It is down river, a few miles, from Edgerton, and probably a dozen miles north of Janesville. The dam actually generates power for the area. I understand that the dam is owned by a property association from Lake Koshkonong, and the dam maintains the lake level and creates power while doing so. Lake Koshkonong is upriver a couple of miles. It is shallow there, but beyond the dam the water can be as much as twelve feet deep. The fishing is great here but watch out for the DNR guy with the drone....! Video shows views of the dam and the surrounding area. It was a very cold morning, and I had the place almost to myself. It was nice to see the antique car, and later I had a good conversation with a local guy about fishing and gold hunting..... </video> <video> Watching Train Power At Elmhurst Illinois UPRR Chicago West Line Description: I was all over town filming these clips. Elmhurst Illinois is on the Union Pacific Railroad's Chicago West Line (Geneva Sub). This is a very heavily traveled set of tracks! Video shows Metra commuter trains, UP freight and there are clips of the Big Boy and a Herzog MOW train. The rails are the old Illinois Central Railroad's "Freeport Sub" that travels west from Chicago. I was in the near west suburbs of Hillside Broadview and North Riverside watching this Local train. Out this way, we call this M-F Local, "The Addison Local." Most every weekday it leaves the Hawthorne Rail Yard in Cicero to service industry up the line. The Canadian Nation Railway now operates these tracks and every once in a while they use a "Fallen Flag" locomotive for the Local. In this case, it is good to see the old Illinois Central Railroad back on its own home turf! Ashton is not too far west of Rochelle, and that is where (I think) the light power originated from? The coal train was traveling east and it is one of Wisconsin Power's dedicated trains. Recorded Wednesday October 23,2024 </video> <video> Filling The Tracks UPRR Chicago West Line At Elmhurst Illinois #train Description: Yeah, there used to be a fairly large lumber yard at this location. I grabbed these clips near Park & Myrtle which is towards the west end of Elmhurst Illinois. Up into the 1980's, there was a siding, that came off the Main, just the other side of the signal tower. Now, the area is under the combined control of Elmhurst Public Works and Elmhurst University. The siding is long gone but the trains still roar through here, filling all three tracks of one of the busiest main lines in the entire USA! The first tow trains are westbound. The autorack is eastbound as was the Metra (Inbound). This is in Elmhurst Illinois near the Proviso Rail Yard. We get a good, but quick, look at the lash moving west, and then it briefly stops. The lash then comes back, heading east. I got ahead of it and watched it cross the Poplar Avenue crossing and then proceed into Proviso. These light power moves asre a fairly ordinary even every day at Elmhurst. What was a little different on this move was the quantity of locomotives! The weather was very cold but the trains were running! All five trains are shown at Hillside but I also included a clip of the Local at North Riverside (I got him at Hillside and then got ahead of him. The rails here are the old Illinois Central Railroad;s "Iowa Service." Indeed, some of these trains originate in Iowa. Usually seen are the ethanol tankers and the grain hoppers. If I am lucky I'll catch a manifest freight but there is always the Local to watch for!
