One of the biggest considerations Mitchell shares is the shape of the school and how you can manipulate the shape of the school to catch more fish. Top line options for ice fishing panfish. Clam has developed some extremely high-quality fishing line designed for ice fishing. This video shows specific reasoning and applications for different line types and diameters. In our opinion, the Frost 3-pound test monofilament is one of the best overall lines for ice fishing panfish and is very versatile for a wide range of presentations. We find the Frost mono is limber with little memory and little stretch and works excellent in cold temperatures. The three-pound test in particular fishes and feels very similar to two-pound test but is much stronger and more durable than one or two-pound test. There are many panfish fisheries however that do seem to require one or two-pound test. Typically, where there is extremely clear water and higher fishing pressure or when some extreme finesse is necessary with jigs that fall on the smaller end of the size spectrum. Because one and two-pound test does break off much easier, we typically don't scale down unless we have to but there are times where you will catch more fish by going as light as you can. We typically recommend Frost 4-pound mono for spoons and search baits, lures or jigs that fall on the large size of the lure presentation spectrum for panfish. We often use 2 or 4-pound Frost Fluorocarbon when fishing pencil reeds, weeds or wood as the Fluorocarbon does seem tougher than monofilament on that type of contact. Over extremely deep water like when we fish for jumbo perch over forty feet of water on Devils Lake, we like the no stretch characteristics of 4 or 6-pound Frost Braid. Shop the line: https://jasonmitchelloutdoors.link/braid </video> <video> Find the Ceiling to Catch MORE Crappie Description: When ice fishing crappies, one of the most important variables that can change from day to day and even hour to hour is what we call the ceiling…. How high will fish rise in the water column to to chase your presentation. During windows of peak activity, crappie might climb six feet or more in the water column to eat. On tough bites, fish might only climb six inches. Once you get a feel for where that zone in the water column is and where most of the fish are… try spending time fishing close to that ceiling. Basically figure out how high you can fish above the fish. By starting out high, this distance above the fish can be a good way to catch some of the bigger fish. With a school of crappie, the biggest fish have the most confidence leaving the security of the pack and if more than one fish are climbing in the water column to reach your presentation… usually the largest fish with the biggest tail wins that race. </video> <video> Best Way to Hook Shiners on Dead Sticks Description: A plain hook and a split shot has caught plenty of walleyes. This is our favorite way to hook shiners for dead sticking when ice fishing. Shiners can be delicate and die easy. This method of running the hook right above the caudal fin seems to keep the shiner alive and gives the minnow good action. </video> <video> Jumbo Perch in Skinny Water | Use your Vexilar to Catch More Fish Description: At late ice and early ice, we sometimes find jumbo perch in extremely shallow water, sometimes in water as shallow as 2-3 feet below the ice. Some anglers assume electronics are not useful in such shallow water but we find that a Vexilar is extremely useful in extremely shallow water where you can still see your presentation and see fish. Drill your holes as straight up and down as possible. Keep your transducer as high as possible in the hole and use the low power feature on your Vexilar. If you have a Vexilar that enables you to adjust the frequency, experiment with the lowest frequencies. Remember that the cone angle sends out a frequency that is not a perfect cone but rather lobed like branches on a Christmas tree. This lobing in the frequency on a Vexilar enables you to see fish in shallow water. We explored some of the backcountry lakes by going down old logging trails on snowmobile. Insane action for golden Canadian walleye that kept us up fishing all night. Classic location where we set up on the break line or basin edge in front of an incoming stream. We caught fish on a variety of lures including Tikka Minos and Leech Flutter Spoons but the key was to charge up the glow often. We go over the gear necessary for overnight fishing in temperatures that were about 30 below zero. There is some tremendous fishing opportunities for the ice anglers who like to explore and Wekusko Falls Lodge is the perfect base camp.
