The compilation presents 51 tracks captured during the duo’s intimate sessions at Grisman’s home studio showcasing the original, unembellished master recordings, alternate takes, and the first performances of classic tunes from their songbook. The first volume includes seven master takes released on Garcia/Grisman, Shady Grove, and Been All Around This World. The remaining 12 tracks, mostly from Not For Kids Only, were recorded as duos but were embellished with percussion, fiddle, autoharp, vocal harmonies, and yes, even insects while Jerry was out touring. They are presented here for the first time in their original unadorned state. The second volume is comprised of unreleased original recorded versions of tunes that became staples of the Garcia/Grisman repertoire – "Grateful Dawg,” “Dawg’s Waltz,” and “Arabia.” Also included are duo versions of other songs all subsequently arranged with bassist Jim Kerwin and multi-instrumentalist, Joe Craven — “Two Soldiers,” “Take Me,” and the perennial Grateful Dead favorite, “Friend of the Devil.” The last volume within the collection assembles 16 alternate takes of duo recordings released on Garcia/Grisman, Not For Kids Only, Shady Grove, and even Volume II of this series. Free from deadlines and full of inspiration, Jerry and David would often revisit songs across multiple sessions. While only one take could make the cut for any given album, these alternate takes showcase the duo’s immense creativity and lust for new possibilities. As Dawg says in the closing liner notes, “…these recordings can be heard from a more historical (or should I say hysterical) perspective.” The Bare Bones collection will be released in two physical configurations: a 3-CD set containing all three individual volumes; and individual 2-LP pressings for each volume. Stay tuned for more information about release dates for Volume II and Volume III on LP… </video> <video> Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders - "Save Mother Earth" - Heads & Tails Volume 1 Description: Tale of the Tape: “Save Mother Earth” from Heads & Tails: Vol. 1 Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders with special guest Paul Butterfield Recorded January 19th, 1972 at the Lion’s Share, San Anselmo, CA "Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders and company emigrated from the Matrix for good when the tiny San Francisco club closed in the spring of 1971, but the spirit lingered. They’d started branching out with bassist John Kahn and drummer Bill Vitt almost immediately as soon as Saunders replaced Howard Wales as organist in the loose Monday night sessions in late 1970, playing Tuesdays and Wednesdays and even weekends before bringing the act to the Bay Area club circuit where they’d live for the next half-decade. The band struck equal commitments to serious playing (gigging multiple times a week when Garcia wasn’t on the road with the Grateful Dead, constantly evolving their repertoire) and serious informality (almost never rehearsing, avoiding having a band name). They played together for some seven months before it seems like anybody thought to record them, and Saunders’ instrumental “Save Mother Earth” was in place as the first original jam vehicle in the band’s repertoire when the tape record begins in May 1971. There aren’t many recordings from the band’s first year together, but “Save Mother Earth” is on most of them, a signature tune that was a halfway between the total freeform of their origins and the more song-driven grooves they’d discover. When the band backed Saunders for his solo debut LP, Heavy Turbulence, probably recorded in early 1972, “Save Mother Earth” became the first single, spread over two sides with only-in-the-studio overdubbed vocals by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. So when harmonica player Paul Butterfield dropped by the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo in January 1972 after bassist John Kahn reconnected with him at a Woodstock studio session, it was probably a given that they’d jam on it. Kahn had been in and out of Paul Butterfield’s orbit for years, auditioning for Butterfield’s band in the late ‘60s and not getting the gig. He’d met drummer Bill Vitt playing in the rhythm section for Mike Bloomfield, Butterfield’s former guitarist. As founder and frontman of the epochal Butterfield Blues Band (whose 1966 East-West provided a pivotal transition between the blues and psychedelic eras), Butterfield himself didn’t have much previous musical connection with Garcia or Saunders, but the quartet had almost been designed for just such circumstances. Once the band is through the head of the song, Butterfield jumps in with both feet, his saturated harmonica honking and zapping atmospheric space-blues for 17 minutes, the earth temporarily saved. The tape presents both Butterfield’s only known appearance with Garcia/Saunders, and also the seed for what became a detour for both Saunders and bassist John Kahn. Within a few months, Kahn would relocate to Woodstock to help assemble Paul Butterfield’s Better Days, and soon brought Saunders with him. They played on both coasts throughout the summer of 1972. In Saunders’ memory, it lasted “six months before I got tired of it and moved back,” as he told Relix in 1988, but it was probably closer to six weeks. Organized by Bill Graham Presents and the Hog Farm Family in support of the Black Oak Ranch, this event marked the Jerry Garcia Band’s debut along the banks of the Eel River and the inception of what would become a beloved bi-annual concert series running through 1991. Garcia & co matched the hot climate with an equally scorching set dotted with favorites including a triple dose of Dylan (“Forever Young,” “I Shall Be Released,” and “Tangled Up in Blue”), and a blistering “Deal,” amongst other highlights. The early 80’s marked a transitional period for the Jerry Garcia Band. After beginning the decade with the lean & mean quartet showcased on After Midnight and GarciaLive Volume One, Garcia & John Kahn would go on to experiment with personnel configurations expanding the line-up considerably. By the time the Jerry Garcia Band rolled into the Cape Cod Coliseum co-headliners Bobby & the Midnites, the line-up included Grateful Dead bandmate Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Melvin Seals (organ), Jimmy Warren (electric piano) and Liz Stires & Julie Stafford (backing vocals). While the co-headline format limited each group to a single 90-minute set, Garcia’s 8-song set packed plenty of punch. The requisite “How Sweet It Is” opener wastes no time getting down to business with a galloping tempo punctuated by crisp solos from Garcia, Warren, & Seals. The relative rarity “Valerie,” marking its first appearance here on an archival release, and extended, show-stopping takes on “Dear Prudence” and “Don’t Let Go” follow to the crowd’s obvious delight. Other highlights from Cape Cod include a poignant take on Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate” and the freshly written “Run for the Roses.” For the first time in the series, GarciaLive Volume 20 also includes a bit of filler. A soul-soaked, and first known, performance of the Rolling Stone’s “Moonlight Mile” leaves the crowd breathless to close the first set. On paper the second set may look curious with only three songs, but a closer look and listen reveals some of the evening’s deepest moments. Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come” opens the second set and may encapsulate the dynamic range of the mid-70’s era JGB better than any other with its soulful harmonies and adventurous improvisation taking the song well beyond its form before bringing it all back around. The group’s first known performance of “Talkin’ ‘Bout You” is a spirited romp that sends everyone home on a high note.
