In order to do so, we'll need to rely a little bit on Quantum Mechanics as well as calculate the surface area of a hypersphere. The end result points us to the same conclusion: The most likely case is extremely likely, and deviations are absolutely tiny. In an Einstein Solid, we have particles that are trapped in a quantum harmonic oscillator. Each particle has 3 oscillators they are part of, one for each dimension. The energy in an oscillator must be some integer multiple of a unit value, and so we can count the number of ways energy can be allocated. In this section, I cover some behaviors of large numbers as well as very large numbers, dive a little bit into Stirling's Approximation, and then calculate the behavior of Einstein solids. We'll calculate entropy for Einstein Solids and the Ideal Gas. We'll look at how Entropy is created, including the Entropy of Mixing. We'll talk about the Gibbs Paradox and Maxwell's Daemon. Finally, we'll look at the heat death of the universe and the Big Bang. Back in section 1.1, we said that temperature was thing that is the same when two bodies are in thermal equilibrium. We now know that when two bodies come into thermal contact, that the total entropy will be maximized as energy is exchanged between them. So the rate of change in the entropy over energy for each body must be equal. This is the inverse of the temperature. We then calculate the temperature of Einstein Solids and Ideal Gases. I also share Schroeder's "Silly Analogy" to help you understand why this definition of temperature is intuitive and simple. It all comes down to the heat capacity. The simple formula dS = Q/T is also useful for calculating the entropy when we don't have a convenient model to calculate the multiplicities. We also discuss what happens as T approaches 0, and make some observations about "residual entropy" and how the heat capacity should behave as we approach 0 K. With very small degrees of freedom (one or two atoms) the probability distribution is very wide. However, when we get to 100 atoms with 100 units of energy, we begin to see that curve tighten sharply. Although we don't have the tools to calculate what happens with numbers comparable to Avogadro's constant, we begin to see a pattern and thus can start to make definitive statements about the 2nd Law.
