We then head down Giltspur Street past Pye Corner to the site of Greyfriars Monastery on Newgate Street. Passing St Paul's Cathedral we enter the area that was dominated by Blackfriars Priory. Here in Playhouse Yard we stand within the site of Blackfriars theatre established by James Burbage in 1596. William Shakespeare was involved with the theatre and bought a property in Ireland Yard in 1613. We see the deed for the property in the gallery of St Andrew by the Wardrobe along with the Shakspeare Memorial. We also visit Church Entry and St Anne's Blackfriars churchyard. After our pint we walk through Plaistow Park and discuss some of the history of Plaistow from Luke Howard and his clouds to the grand houses that once marked this marshy lowland including homes of the Earl of Essex and the Duke of Cumberland. We then visit the site of a former tramway garage. We part company on Barking Road where I sign copies of my new publication The Black Path at Newham Bookshop. I then walked through the backstreets of Plaistow to West Ham Park where I explore the history of this fantastic London park which is celebrating its 150 year anniversary. Once the home of Dr Fothergill at Ham House, it was bought by the Gurney family from Norwich in the 18th Century and then eventually purchased by the Corporation of London in 1874 to be preserved as a public park. We see the enormous container port - the largest in the UK and the Harwich Haven. From here we pick up the Orwell and Stour walk around the dock and along the River Orwell and around Trimley Marshes. I've walked the Walbrook a couple of times there's a video on my channel here. I'd always come across a couple of sources that rise up in Moorgate around Moorgate Moorfields, Moorgate, the lower end of City Road, around Shoreditch, Hoxton, Old Street, and it flows through the City of London. It's a great walk. But I'd never heard of it rising up here at the Angel, where it intersects with a couple of amazing stories and it brings in the story of how London got its water when it was running out of water in the Middle Ages. </video> <video> Magical London Christmas Lights Walking Tour (4K) Description: Walking tour exploring the beautiful London Christmas lights. We start at the Tudor Middle Temple Hall with its wonderful display of Christmas trees outside the 16th century hall.
