To me, Cartier is a paragon of this idea. On this episode, I walk you through some of the jewelry house’s most emblematic pieces. I start with a Cartier watch I myself wear every single day: an all-black vintage Cartier Must from the 1970s. I then discuss the Tank, Cartier’s most renowned watch, which was influenced by World War I combat machinery as well as the De Stijl Dutch art movement founded in 1917. I also discuss the famous wearers of the Tank, who include Truman Capote, Duke Ellington, Andy Warhol, Rudolph Valentino, Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana, Muhammad Ali, Patti Smith, Jon Hamm, and Kim Kardashian. In this episode, I explain the ways in which Prada, to me, embodies all of these seeming paradoxes. I begin with the Italian luxury house’s founder, Miuccia Prada, whose background as a feminist activist remains at the heart of all her work. This was evident all the way back in 1998, in her first ready-to-wear collection: At the time, high fashion was defined by glamorous brands like Armani and Versace, but Prada’s collection was utilitarian, inspired by workwear and uniforms. It was almost—intentionally—ugly. In that sense, Prada was really about dressing for yourself. I also touch on Prada’s spring/summer 2001 ready-to-wear and fall/winter 2013 ready-to-wear, both of which are quintessential Prada collections. Finally, I talk about some pieces Prada has created with what has become their hallmark fabric: nylon. Prada’s aesthetic codes are not just about colors and silhouettes. Instead, they’re rooted in the conceptual, and in the individuality and boldness of their wearers. By wearing Prada, you imply questions and challenge assumptions. In this episode, I look into how this Gucci “world” came to be, analyzing the house’s central codes and taking a peek inside the minds of its creators. After detailing Gucci’s 20th-century history—which began in Italy with Guccio Gucci in 1921, and was later revived by Tom Ford in the 1990s—I delve into the vast influence of Alessandro Michele, who currently serves as Gucci’s creative director. Michele has been nothing short of revolutionary for the brand: His designs question and undermine traditional ideas of beauty, gender, and aesthetic cohesion in ways that are eccentric and provocative, yet still digestible and in line with the house’s longstanding codes. In the video, I detail two of Michele’s experimental projects: the Gucci Garden, a museum-store in Florence, and the Gucci Vault, an online version of the Garden. Ultimately, for me, Gucci is the brand it is today because it avoids pretense and is unabashedly itself. Louis Vuitton is definitely one of those brands. In this episode, I walk through the house’s evolution and the always-innovative yet always-practical designs that have made it the world’s number one luxury brand. Naturally, I begin with M Louis Vuitton himself, who set the brand up for success with his invention of the first canvas trunk—what I’d call the invention of luggage as we know it today. I then delve into the influence of Vuitton’s son Georges, who took over the brand after his father’s death. Georges’s influence on the brand is incalculable to me: His careful consideration of women’s needs led to his creation of some of the house’s most iconic handbags, including the Speedy, the Keepall, the Neverfull, the Noe, the Alma, the Dauphine, and the Capucines. Finally, I discuss the house’s collaborations with artists, including Steven Sprouse, Takashi Murakami, and Fornasetti. It’s incredible to me how Louis Vuitton has always stayed on trend through creativity, quirkiness, and forward-minded leadership. In this episode, I introduce you to the trench’s original architect—the British luxury fashion house Burberry—and walk you through its many intricacies. I begin with the inception of the brand, which was rooted in a very practical, universal problem: rain. For most of the 19th century, rainwear was heavy, bulky, and difficult to move in. In 1879, however, Thomas Burberry invented a new lightweight, breathable, weatherproof, and tear-proof fabric called gabardine. The fabric gained widespread acclaim, and during World War I, Burberry used it to design the very first trench coat. Over time, Burberry outerwear became known and loved by people all over the world, and it soon made its way to becoming one of the world’s top luxury fashion brands. Today, Burberry is worn by the world’s top celebrities, including Billie Eilish, Selena Gomez, and F.K.A. Twigs. But to me, the brand will always be fundamentally democratic in its aesthetic. It works on everyone: babies, kids, old people, young people, people in other countries all over the world… even dogs. It doesn’t really matter how old you are, or where you’re from, you like it. She has been an enormous inspiration to me in my life and work. This episode is my paean to her—and to some of the brilliant things she made in her lifetime. I begin by discussing Elsa’s famous Bottle necklace. Next I explore her work with the fashion designer Halston, for whom she was a muse, friend, and model, as well as a designer—she created an iconic fragrance bottle and some jewelry for him. After that, I get into her multifaceted design work with Tiffany & Co., including her Open Heart necklace, Bone cuffs, terracotta Bone candlestick holders, and Fishbowl vessel, in addition to her experiences in the late 1970s Studio 54 scene. I also talk about her long-standing collaboration with the photographer Hiro, who created images that, when I looked at them in Vogue magazine in my youth, just made me ache for their beauty. I finish the episode on Elsa’s gold mesh bra for Tiffany—maybe my favorite Elsa design of all—which Zoë Kravitz wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2019. On this episode, I visit the Brooklyn Museum’s “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” exhibition and walk through the house’s aesthetic evolution—one that’s been shaped by changes in style, historical context, and creative leadership. The Golden Globes is the first in a long run of awards shows that an actress will have to attend. It’s complicated to get the dresses because the ceremony comes right after New Year's Day and there aren't any new collections yet. From a fashion perspective, it’s a strange awards show because of that. On this week’s episode, I go into my planning process for the Golden Globes: Which designer are we going to work with? Who best suits the actress? Depending on the schedule, and also the location of the designer, we have between one and as many as six fittings for a dress. A thing I love about the Golden Globes is that it’s when the jewelers bring in all the big diamonds to Los Angeles, and when I get to pick all of the jewelry for the awards shows. (Moving jewelry is incredibly complex, so they keep the selected pieces in L.A. through awards season.) This year, it hasn’t happened yet—it may happen this fall—but to mark the annual occasion, I wanted to revisit several past Met Balls and talk about the fun fashion there. For me, the best part about the Met Ball is that it’s really all about the clothes. I highlight a few of my top moments that are obvious—like when Rihanna wore a greenish-yellow Chinese couture gown by Guo Pei that took two years to make, or when Lady Gaga did her whole “camp” routine with four outfit changes—as well as some less well-known favorites: I absolutely love what the model Karen Elson wears each year, and I think Lauren Santo Domingo and Tabitha Simmons also look extraordinary year after year. I love when “naked” dresses work, too—as Beyoncé’s did one year, or Bella Hadid’s did another. One of the best things about the Met Ball is that it’s home to some of the greatest fashion faux pas: dresses with gloves attached, dresses that are wildly unflattering, dresses that are costumes. The gala is like one big couture costume party. I also discuss the great importance and influence of the Met’s Costume Institute, and how the Met Ball helps fundraise for it. I then go into three dresses I love that clients of mine have worn to the gala: a transparent pink Gucci dress with crystals that Dakota Johnson wore; a Coach polyester slip dress inspired by vintage lingerie that was one of two made for Selena Gomez to wear; and a swooping 3D-printed plastic dress made by Zac Posen, who partnered with GE Additive x Protolabs, that Nina Dobrev wore. At the conclusion of the episode, I ask Nina about that dress, which required her to stay standing for the entire night.
