The pregnancy does not progress to the point where a gestational sack is visualized on ultrasound. It is called a chemical pregnancy, since the it is diagnosed only by chemical means. In contrast, a so-called clinical pregnancy is characterized by the fact that it has reached a stage where the gestation can be seen on ultrasound examination. Because chemical pregnancies happen at an early stage, they typically resolve on their own. Unlike later stage miscarriages, medical treatment such as prescriptions or procedures are not required. That being said, it is important to contact your doctor if you think you are experiencing a loss of any type, so you can be evaluated. Unfortunately, chemical pregnancies are incredibly common. Description: In this short, I'll tell you just how likely a pregnancy loss is, depending on the age of the egg source. Miscarriage has become a much more widely discussed topic in recent years, but let's talk about just how common miscarriage is. I often her stats like 15% or 20% of all pregnancies result in a pregnancy loss but it really depends on the age of the egg source. Let's look at this study which followed the outcome of over a million pregnancies to determine the association between age of the egg source and pregnancy loss. Most first trimester pregnancy losses are due to chromosome problems in the pregnancy. And the chance of a chromosome difference increases with age. So check out this table and look at the green line. If you conceive in your teens or 20s there is around a 12-15% chance of pregnancy loss. By age 35, 1 in 5 pregnancies result in a loss, and by 42 over 50% of all conceptions result in a loss. However, if a person is actively monitoring for pregnancy by taking pregnancy tests (β-hCG tests) prior to a missed period or around the time a period is anticipated, they can be detected. There is nothing we can do to prevent miscarriages, including pregnancy losses. That being said there are some life style factors that can increase your risk for miscarriages. Katie Lee is a certified genetic counselor (CGC) with over five years of practice in reproductive medicine. She worked for one of the most well-known IVF clinics in the US and for a genetic testing laboratory that offers fertility related genetic testing like PGT-A (preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy), PGT-M (preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic diseases) and POC (products of conception testing on miscarriages. Katie Lee currently works with one of the largest sperm banks in the county.
