We are north of Deer River in the middle of nowhere. I found this spot while scouting via Google Maps and OnX. This was actually the fourth campsite I checked on Friday. The other 3 campsites no longer existed. I almost got the truck stuck in heavy clay trying to reach a hand launch on a remote forest lake. It looked like no one had been back there for a long time. As soon as I started spinning in 2wd I got out of there. I could only imagine what that tow bill would look like. I decided not to record on the way out this week. The drive out can take an hour or two longer if I record it and I was trying to beat sundown. One of these days I'll have to document the struggles I go through to find these hidden little gems. I can't believe I've been doing this for 3.5 years, and I'm still finding new spots to bring you to. Minnesota is the hidden gem of outdoor recreation. I hear so much about remote camping in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Montana, all the states with vast amounts of BLM lands, but Minnesota is a sleeper state when it comes to outdoor recreation. Maybe it's because our winters are brutally cold, and our summers are sweltering hot with mosquitos the size of sparrows, but I love how much public land we have. This spot was insanely beautiful with a little bit of an ominous vibe. There was a fog rolling off the lake most of the weekend. We had rain Friday evening into Saturday morning. The air Saturday was super damp and cold. It felt nice to have the campfire going all day. Toby and I were pretty lazy. We stuck to the campsite because I could hear hunter shooting in the forest. Friday night I ended up having a terrible nightmare. In the past I have struggled with night terrors and sleep paralysis. I think all the stresses of life have opened the door to having sleep paralysis show up again. Around 3am I was half asleep, half awake. I thought I saw lights outside my camper. I could hear people walking around, and then someone started walking up the steps. I tried to yell, but nothing was happening, I couldn't move! My body was paralyzed. The lock on my camper door is broken and I thought for sure someone was coming in. I felt completely helpless. Eventually, after screaming as hard as I could and trying to move with all my might, I was able to snap out of it. I was finally able to sit up and realized it was a dream. I hate that feeling. Sometimes when this happens, I'm able to recognize what is going on. I will scream "WAKE ME UP" over and over in hopes that my kids or Mandi will hear me mumbling in my sleep. I know I have a lot of trauma that I have never dealt with. Anyone who has worked in LE and first response knows exactly what I'm talking about. The years of hypervigilance and bad calls has no doubt left scars. That is why I seek out solitude and let mother nature heal my soul on the weekends. I'm glad I didn't pack up Saturday morning and go home. The thought definitely crossed my mind. Sunday morning, I felt better knowing I I didn't let anxiety and fear steal something from me that I love. Oh well....I've been talking enough....I hope you enjoyed following along with Toby and me. I'm just looking for a little piece of solitude on the weekends to recharge my mental batteries and repair my soul from the never-ending work week. It humbles me to think that anyone besides Mandi and my mom would want to join along on these travels. I want to give a special thanks to everyone who joins along every Tuesday. Also, I want to thank the folks who sent Christmas cards and gifts for my family. The letters are heartwarming, and the pictures and drawings bring my family so much joy. Toby loves all his toys! You are all restoring my faith in humanity and reminding me that there are so many good people in this world. In my earlier videos I used to talk about my attitude towards people. After years in Law Enforcement, I was left a little jaded. That is where the closing of my video comes from. I used to get so frustrated with people. I would leave calls thinking if people were just a little more honest and kinder to each other I wouldn't need to wear a badge. I remember saying in a video.... it's not that I don't like people, I just don't like what we have become. Who knew that starting a YouTube channel and meeting new people in the comment section would be the therapy I needed. Don't get me wrong....I get emails from people telling me that they hope I am found dead in my camper, half eaten by my Pitbull. Some of the people who watch and comment truly are suffering from issues. But to the people who enjoy following along with Toby and me, seeing what beautiful scenery God and Mother Nature has created for us, YOU ARE ALL TOTALLY AWESOME!!! It can be found on Amazon and Walmart. The floodlight was the Braun 7000 handheld from Harbor Freight. I want to thank everyone for all the positive thoughts and prayers seeing that my sewer issue is fixed. I think I got it all figured out. I'm lucky in the fact that when life tries to kick me down a peg or tow I at least land on my feet. I have always been one of those guys who can usually find a solution to the problem, and if that doesn't work, I keep going until I figure it out. I know there's people who show up in my comments saying how nice it must have a lot of money. As most of you guys know I'm a state employee and I make 24.50 an hour. I'm definitely not swimming in cash, but I know how to live within my means. I appreciate everyone who asked me to start a donation page. I'm humbled by how many people want to help me out. But the truth is there are so many people suffering with real world issues right now. I had a viewer send me an email talking about the issues that North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, and Virginia are having right now. I have been seeing little things about flooded roads, but she made me aware that many people have lost friends and family members to the floods. Those are the people who need help. I am shocked that I have not been hearing more about this. It's sad how many lives have been lost, homes swept any, and entire towns turned into rubble. How is this news not all over media? I'm going to share the viewer's email. These are the folks that need a hand right now. I'm sending you this because I know you have a large following of campers who may be planning to visit NC, SC, Eastern TN, Northern GA and the Atlanta area as well as some areas in Kentucky and Southwestern VA. Western North Carolina is closed. There is no access in or out at this time. I-40 washed down the mountain at the TN-NC state line and will not be repaired in the foreseeable future. Anyone who may have friends or family that were camping, hiking or water rafting in the areas of Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest, GSMNP or along the Appalachian Trail can try to reach out to the local district offices of the NFS but cell phone service is spotty at best and the major carriers do not have a timeline as to when they may be able to repair as much of the area remains underwater. If anyone had persons visiting Great Smoky Mountains NP, it does not appear there was catastrophic damage to the park or to Gatlinburg but again, cell phone service in much of the area is down. Local law enforcement is asking people to save contacting them for missing persons as a last resort...they are completely overwhelmed and on top of that, two county sheriff's offices lost deputies in the flooding this weekend. Chimney Rock, NC no longer exists...it washed away Saturday morning. Most of Lake Lure, NC is devastated so anyone planning visits to those areas or to our state park at Chimney Rock, please regroup and go elsewhere. Most of our mountain and foothills cities and towns suffered significant damage. If anyone had someone hiking the AT, you can reach out to the AT headquarters in Harpers Ferry, VA but please be aware, no one has been allowed into the area since last Friday so they may have very limited information. I'm pretty sure you have followers who were planning a fall trip for our leaf season. We won't be having one. You may have had followers who were planning a trip to Biltmore House in Asheville, NC...Biltmore Forest and the surrounding village are underwater at this time. There is no information about the home itself at this time but they are closed for now. I'm sending you this and would love for you to repost for your followers...we would appreciate your prayers and, if you are able, donations to the many organizations who are already on the ground but the state asks that you not come to this area until the all clear has been given by law enforcement and state officials...and this may be several weeks to months down the road. Saturday when I woke up, I was a mess. I tried to get into the woods but i wasn't feeling it. Sunday when I woke up, I was feeling better, so I decided to take Toby fishing. I also decided it was a good day to tackle a few projects on the truck. I hope changing the fuel filters will save me from gelling up this winter. I already run straight #1 fuel and a double dose of anti-gel; I hope the new filter solve this issue. Mandi's son Connor helped me complete a few projects, maybe I can get him in the videos more often. My oldest daughter Kya showed up late Sunday and I was able to finish fixing an issue with her car. It was also Mandi's birthday! She got off work early. It was nice spending time with her and the family this weekend. Toby and I will be back out in the woods next week.
