One of the reasons the Chiefs are so effective is the connection Patrick Mahomes has with his receivers. I’ve talked to Patrick about this a few times because I’ve noticed that his receivers sometimes adjust their routes based on the coverage they see downfield. When I played, I wanted my receivers to follow their routes precisely so I knew where they’d be, allowing me to read the defense and trust their responsibilities. Patrick explained that in their system, certain routes are set to be flexible, allowing the receiver to adjust based on the coverage. However, there are still routes where the receiver has to be exactly where they’re supposed to be, when they’re supposed to be there. In this episode, I’ll show you how they used this approach to create a nearly indefensible play, provided the quarterback and receiver read it the same way. This often comes off what I call a "POCO" concept—a post and a corner route combination. He’s willing to put the ball in harm’s way a bit more because he trusts his right arm and believes he can make big plays. You’re going to see some of those decisions turn into big plays, but others will result in negative outcomes. This approach is very similar to how I played the game. I always felt like I wanted to challenge the defense with every throw. Even if it meant throwing a few interceptions, I knew it would force defenses to play on their heels—dropping back and giving us more opportunities for big plays throughout the game. I was willing to sacrifice a few tight throws or even a couple of interceptions per game because I understood the payoff. By loosening up the defense from the line of scrimmage to about 20 yards deep, we could capitalize on deeper throws because defenders were constantly worried about us attacking downfield. So, as I talk about this, you’ve got to consider the context of every interception to fully understand a quarterback’s performance. It’s not just about the stat sheet. Now, Russell also threw for over 400 yards with some incredibly beautiful, definitive football. But on other plays, it looks like he’s not quite sure what’s going on and just happens to make plays in those situations, finding success anyway. One of the things that stood out to me right away is that Kirk seemed to be hesitating more than he has in the past. This is understandable; when you’re adjusting to a new system and trying to figure out your teammates, it’s a process. Sometimes, you’re not entirely sure what anyone is going to do, so you pause and hesitate with some of your throws. I saw this happen several times with Kirk. I also felt that the system didn’t always support him. They ran a lot of what we call "pure progression" concepts, which didn’t seem to play to his strengths. Now, I don’t know if Kirk gets another shot at some point, but he hasn’t played his best football this season. To be fair, the offense as a whole hasn’t performed well either. I wanted to provide you with a big-picture view of what’s going on. When you go back and review the tape, I think it’s worth asking: could another quarterback have done more? Maybe a little more, but could they have done a lot more in this situation? Was this because Kirk wasn’t playing good football, or was it because of the issues around him? There have obviously been moments where Kirk hasn’t played well, but my main point is that this offense has felt clunky all year long in terms of timing, spacing, and Kirk’s overall comfort within the system.
