Channel Title: Kutumba Archives Channel Description: 16 years ago a group of musician interested in Nepali folk music joined forces to research, preserve and celebrate the diversity that exists in indigenous Nepali music and named it Kutumba. 6 albums and 918 concerts later, we are collecting and trying to preserve traditional Nepalese music and instruments. Nepal is a uniquely diverse country with nearly 100 ethnicities and as many languages. Each region and ethnic group has its own distinct musical tradition. A country divided by language, topography and politics, Kutumba uses the power of music to celebrate diversity and cultivate unity in the face of perpetual unrest. In efforts to disseminate traditional music beyond Nepal’s borders, Kutumba has launched a You tube channel dedicated to indigenous music, many of which are endangered traditions. Kutumba Archives features music and artists from across Nepal. The first show featured students from the Vadhya Shiromani Sangeet Gharana. </video> <video> Snow Lion of Peace - Tibetan Song | Mason Brown | KUTUMBA Archive Description: Mason Brown completed his PhD in Ethnomusicology, focusing primarily on Tibetan music and culture in Nepal, with an eye toward overlaps between liturgical music and contemporary popular forms, as well as rural folk traditions. His other research interests include Japanese Buddhist chant, American and Irish vernacular fiddle music, and violin manufacturing in the Industrial Revolution. Mason holds a double B.A. in Religious Studies and Music, with a minor in Tibetan language, from Naropa University. Before embarking on his graduate studies, Mason was a sign painter, carpenter, recording artist and touring musician, as well as a Zen priest. He continues to record and perform original and traditional folk music, and is a resident priest at Hakubai Zen Temple in Boulder.
