In warmer regions, where ryegrass acts as a winter substitute, overseeding is typically done in October to early November to maintain that lush green appearance during the cooler months. Step 1: Scalping Your Lawn: The first step is to scalp your lawn, cutting it as low as possible without causing damage. Don't be alarmed if your grass looks a bit rough after this - it's a crucial part of the process. By reducing the grass canopy, you create an optimal environment for your new seeds, ensuring they reach the soil layer and receive sunlight. Step 2: Dethatching or Scarifying: Now, it's time to dethatch or scarify your lawn to remove dead debris between the grass and the soil. This step is vital for achieving proper seed-to-soil contact, a key factor in successful overseeding. Seed won't germinate without it. Step 3: Spreading the Seed: The next question is how much seed to use. While the general recommendation is 6-8 lbs per thousand square feet for perennial ryegrass, I overseeded 10 lbs per thousand sq ft. Why the extra seed? Well, if your lawn is already thick with established grass, a heavier seeding rate ensures that the new grass can compete and thrive. Step 4: Raking In the Seed: Don't skip this step! Raking the seed into the soil helps it settle into the grooves created during dethatching. This is essential for that crucial seed-to-soil contact. Step 5: Rolling the Seed In: One of the most critical yet often overlooked steps is rolling the seed into the ground. Properly rolling your lawn helps achieve that essential contact, ensuring your new grass gets off to a great start. Rent a lawn roller or use your lawn tractor's weight to get the job done. Step 6: No Need for a Cover: Contrary to conventional advice, we recommend skipping the use of peat moss or straw as a cover for your seed. If you've followed the previous steps, your existing grass should provide adequate coverage for germination. Step 7: Proper Watering: Watering is the key to germination. Keep the seed consistently moist, without drowning it. Water 4 times a day for 5-7 minutes each time, adjusting to your irrigation system's specifications. Proper watering is vital for successful overseeding. Adding Starter Fertilizer: After germination, consider adding a starter fertilizer, especially if your soil is low in phosphorus. Follow the label instructions for application. Apply it after the first mow to avoid choking out the new grass with rapid growth.
