I use a riffler tool to smooth out the forms. It's a good idea to smooth out the forms periodically as you work. You can also do this with your hands but because I use the hardest, light-colored oil-based styling clay Chavant, called "Clayette," I can smooth it down with a riffler when it's at room temperature. Smoothing down the forms will give you an accurate idea of where you are at a given stage because your eyes are not distracted by texture.
