Once a key part of Liverpool's transport system, the Liverpool Overhead Railway was built in 1893 as a response to congestion and increasing traffic on the roads around Liverpool's giant dock. The first elevated electric railway in the world, it was a landmark across the city, seeing hundreds of commuters use the service e very day. It ran close to the city's docks, providing cover to those walking underneath it, which is what led to its nickname of the Docker's Umbrella. Tomorrow, December 30, marks 68 years since its closure on December 30, 1956. Despite hopes that another operator could be found and that the line could be reopened, demolition of the track began in 1957. Only a number of generations remember the days of the Overhead Railway in the city. Karolina Szynszecka, 41, from Haydock received a heart breaking phone call on January 1 from her ex-partner alerting her their home on West End Road had been submerged by flood water. It comes as Merseyside was battered by heavy rain on New Year's Eve, with heavy downpours continuing into the early hours of the morning, resulting in flooding, road closures and travel disruption across the region. Haydock in St Helens, saw particularly horrendous weather conditions as dozens of homes at the junction of Blackbrook Road and West End Road were submerged in "6ft of filthy water” after the Sankey Canal burst its banks, leaving many residents with “nothing.” Karolina told the ECHO how she and her son, Jacob Charlesworth, nine, had been celebrating the New Year in Manchester at her boyfriend's house when her phone rang around 10am on New Year’s Day with the devastating news. She said: “We weren’t at home when it happened so we couldn't save anything. “It wasn’t even heavy rain here, my neighbours told me it happened very quickly. Within five minutes the houses were flooded, they said. I was at a New Year’s Eve party with my son and boyfriend in Manchester, we had had a great night and it was all ruined. I couldn’t believe it. “My son's dad was walking the dog past our house and saw the floods and called me. He said ‘I don’t want to worry or ruin your day but you have nothing to come back to at the moment.’ I was thinking about what I left downstairs. What is it going to be like? “I thought it would just be a bit of water and we could clean and save it but there was nothing to save. We have lost everything that was downstairs, we’d just had a new floor done and we’ve lost all my Christmas presents, a PS5, gaming chair, iPhones and documents all need replacing. My son was so excited on Christmas day opening his new presents, he was heartbroken. You'll get paid £25 for each seven day period of very cold weather between November 1, 2024 and March 21, 2025. You may be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment if you're getting Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based jobseekers allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit or Support for Mortgage Interest. You do not need to apply for the DWP payment. If you are eligible it will be paid into your bank account automatically. After each period of very cold weather in your area a payment of £25 should be made within fourteen working days.
