A member of the Vardhana dynasty, he was the son of Prabhakaravardhana who had defeated the Alchon Huna invaders and was the younger brother of Rajyavardhana, a king of Thanesar, present-day Haryana. He patronized Buddhism during his reign and established numerous stupas throughout his empire. At the height of Harsha's power, his territory covered much of north and northwestern India, with the Narmada River as its southern boundary. He eventually made Kannauj (in present Uttar Pradesh state) his capital, and ruled till 647 CE. He was educated in accountancy as well as literate in Persian and Marathi and Urdu. On 6 January 1799, Yashwant Rao Holkar was crowned as the Maharaja of Indore. He had a volatile life and constantly fought with the British and other Maratha chieftains like Baji Rao II and Daulat Rao Sindhia His military acumen helped him in winning most of the battle he had fought and he emerged as the biggest obstacle in British expansion in India. He defeated the British army, under Colonel Fawcett, Colonel Manson and Major Frazer. He also also attacked the capital Delhi in 1804 to take control over the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, who was controlled by the British. He fought a deadly battle against Colonel Ochterlony and Berne but had to retreat after bieng deserted by his fellow chieftain Bhawani Shankar Khatri in the miidle of the war. Yashwant Rao Holkar was bestowed the title of "Maharajadhiraja Raj Rajeshwar Alija Bahadur" as a token of admiration by Mughal Emperor Shah Alam for his bravery. Afraid of the possibility of Holkar uniting the Indian Rajas against them, the British decided to make peace with him. Yashwant Rao then proceeded to sign a treaty with the British on 24 December 1805 He is once of the few Kings who forced the British to sign a peace treaty on his terms. The British returned all his territory, and accepted his dominion over Jaipur, Udaipur, Kota, Bundi and also affirmed not to interfere in matters relating to the Holkars. The victorious king reached Indore and started ruling his newly expanded kingdom. Though Holkar again tried to unite the Maratha Confederacy and opened several cannon making factories in Indore and recruited heavily with one intention that was to drive the British from the Indian subcontinent. After initial gains against the Sultan of Gujrat, he lost two back to back battles, Battle of Chausa (1539) and Battle of Kannauj (1540), against the mighty Sher Shah Suri and was pushed out of his empire. Sher Shah Suri became the new emperor and continued to chase Humayun and forced him to retreat to Shah Tahmasp, the emperor of Persia. Shah Tahmasp helped Humayun and gave him his army, using which Humayun conquered Kandahar and Kabul from his brother Kamran Mirza and Aksari Mirza. After the death of Islam Shah Suri, the son of Sher Shah Suri in 1554, Humayun regrouped his forces and marched to regain his lost territories. After defeating Sikandar Suri in back to back battles, Humayun became the undisputed King of the region in the year 1555 and reestablished the Mughal Dynasty. But, only after six months of his coronation, Humayun died in an accident and his thirteen year old son was crowned as the King.
