A: 37.5' <video> 13 | A Voyage Through the Tuomotu Archipelago Description: Though the Marquesas Islands had captivated us with their beauty, it was time to set sail on the 500 nautical mile passage to the Tuomotus. When we arrived we found islands that were different from the Marquesas in nearly every way. Turquoise lagoons lined by white sand beaches awaited us, and we found beautiful coral reefs surrounding the palm fringed islets. She was built in 1960 of fir and cedar on oak frames, and has proven to be a capable blue water crusing boat for voyaging the world's oceans. Sailing across an ocean has been a long-held dream for us, but we were not planning on extending this cruise so far from home. But, we realized that if we were serious about bluewater cruising, the time was right. We decided to take the leap and sail 2800 nautical miles across the open ocean, reaching the fabled south sea islands. Cruising the South Pacific is on the bucket list for any sailor, and completing this passage has been one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever done. We left Mazatlan on March 23rd, and arrived at Nuku Hiva on April 16th, totalling 24 days and 9 hours at sea. We covered around 2900 nautical miles, used less than half our water and a fourth of our fuel. We motored 35 hours and each of us stood 73 four hour watches. Leaving the lush forested island of Makogai, we sail the famous Bligh Waters to the drier leeward side of the Island group. In the Yasawa and Mamanuka islands we find friendly villages and spectacular coral reefs. The boat needed some repairs after the long crossing, and then we explore the many wonders of Fiji, from waterfalls and sugar cane to chocolate and kava root. Setting sail for Viani Bay, we had a rough upwind bash, but eventually made it on the second try. We found a dive resort with free moorings on Taveuni, and enjoyed the easy life for a few days. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is full of beautiful island anchorages, an abandoned salt mining town, and some of the best panaramic views of our cruise so far.
