FIREBIRD was performed at MASS MoCA on January 26th. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky's iconic "Firebird Suite," Touki Delphine presented a groundbreaking concert program and extraterrestrial installation that defied all rules.  This hypnotic event started with a procession through MASS MoCA’s vast galleries. The audience then arrived at the Hunter Center where they witnessed the ethereal "orchestra'' composed entirely by car tail lights. Oatman’s crash-landed capsule — part of “all utopias fell,” a seasonal work accessible via The Boiler House — immerses visitors in a 1970s style caravan complete with large parachutes, video art, stained glass windows and active solar panels. The installation emerged from the artist’s research into the history of solar energy and the Sprague Electric Company, which occupied the museum campus from 1942 to 1986. Evoking pulp aeronauts such as Buck Rogers and the stories of adventure novelists like Jules Verne, Oatman’s installation inspires exploratory wonder in all who visit.
