I know that the normal chiffchaff song is often made up of an irregular pattern of ‘chiffs’ and ‘chaffs’ but these variants are very different notes that are produced in the intervals between the normal bouts of singing. I had put out some apples and pears in the garden in the morning, more in hope rather than expectation, to see if I could attract either of the winter thrushes that had not yet visited the garden this winter. You can imagine my delight when both the Redwing and Fieldfare put in an appearance, followed not long after by a Song Thrush. The bright colours are there but obscured by dull fringes to the new feathers, the tips of the feathers are worn away gradually over the winter by a process of abrasion until by the spring the full breeding colours are exposed. </video> <video> THE SOUNDS OF GOLDFINCHES – Their Songs and Calls Description: An introduction to the many songs and calls of the Eurasian Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis, that can now be heard in many more gardens as they increasingly come in to feed on Sunflower Hearts and Nijer Seed from our feeders. </video> <video> Brambling and Turkey Tails – A Colour Harmony of Flora and Fauna Description: As a female brambling was feeding on an old dead silver birch branch covered in Turkey Tail fungi I was struck by the perfect colour harmony being produced by this combination of flora and fauna.
