Description: This video is another interesting experiment in adding to the already distinctively dreamy sound of the recreated ancient lyre - with some extra dreamy & trippy combinations of Boss Guitar Pedals! The magic combination of Boss pedals in this arrangement include AW-3 Dynamic Wah, Boss DD-3 Delay & RV-6 Reverb, blended together in real time with my Boss EV-30 expression pedal. The piece is my own original composition, "Invocation to Astreaus (Ancient Greek God of Dusk)", originally published in my 2022 album, "Orpheus Tamed the Animals": https://open.spotify.com/track/6MPZBML5bHQGkWvVdzHV56 In attempting to convey the feeling of dusk, I use the distinctively dark & introspective qualities of the ancient Greek Hypodorian Mode - misnamed the 'Aeolian' mode by scholars during the Middle Ages, this mode consists of 2 conjoined tetrachords, forming the equivalent intervals as A-A on the white notes of the piano (but heard here, in the pristine, pure focus of just intonation). I feature a repetitive motif in the left hand later on in the piece, in order to attempt to evoke the chirping rhythm of cicadas at dusk. I also feature the use of harmonics, in an attempt to musically evoke the shimmering rays of the setting sun. This one and a half hour long presentation, features tracks from this new album, in addition to a selection of tracks from my 2016 albums, "The Ancient Greek Kithara of Classical Antiquity" & "Kithara of the Golden Age", with a couple of tracks featuring my recreated kithara, in my 2024 album, "Ancient Dreamscapes". "Magic of the Kithara" was inspired by my collaboration in the soundscape to the exhibitions of the new Jeff Koons sculpture, "Apollo Kithara" on the Greek island of Hydra in 2022 & Frankfurt during 2023. Starting with my arrangement of an actual surviving ancient Greek melody by Mesomedes of Crete and ending with “Epitaph of Seikilos”, the most famous and only complete surviving piece of notated music from ancient Greece, these two incredible examples of the actual music of classical antiquity frame in between them, a complementary set of my own completely new melodies and a selection of some of my personal favourite older original compositions for lyre, the album hopefully demonstrates how the kithara was the only magnificent lyre worthy of Apollo himself! The kithara was the highly advanced, large wooden lyre of the professional musicians of Classical Greece, which reached its pinnacle of perfection during the “Golden Age” of Classical Antiquity, circa 5th century BCE. In this album, I attempt to demonstrate through new compositions conjured forth in a selection of some of the original ancient Greek musical modes, how the magic of the kithara once cast some of its captivating spells. </video> <video> Ancient Roman Lyre...& Boss RV-6 Reverb Pedal! Description: To celebrate my lyre theme "Ode to Ancient Rome" actually being featured in a scene in episode 7 of the 2024 Peacock TV & Prime Video television series "THOSE ABOUT TO DIE" (featuring Anthony Hopkins!!), here is a live performance of the piece...featuring the otherworldly sound of my BOSS RV-6 REVERB PEDAL!! My lyre theme can be heard for a full blazing minute of glory, from 19:34 minutes into episode 7 and as an added bonuse, during what starts off as a particulary saucey scene (Caltonia tries to take advantage of Rufus’ wife sexually, but she refuses and barges out of her house, asking Fonsoa for a place to stay). The lyre featured 9handmade in the USA by Marini Made Harps) by pure serendpity, happens to look almost exactly like a Roman lyre depcicted in a 4th century mosaic discovered at Antioch, featuring Orpheus taming the beasts with his music, as seen in the image overlay in the video. This live performance is my inital draft of a melodic idea for a track I will probably entitle, "The Sacred Lake of Delos", which almost certainly will be featuring in an extended form for the finalized album. According to the legend, it was at this sacred lake, that Leto gave birth to Apollo and Artemis, making it one of the most sacred sites of the ancient world. In my own creative process, I always first think of a melody, then add what I consider to be the most fitting title later, which on reflection, adds most meaning to the original melodic idea & in turn, I feel adds to the immersive quality of the music I am attemting to create. She is generally associated with Autumn along with Carpho who would bring such plants to their state of fruition and harvest. These two charities, being in the same season, share many similarities. In Athens she was worshipped alongside Auxo (Growth, generally spring growth) and Carpho, and according to the historian Pausanias it is where she obtained her name. In this piece for recreated lyre, I attempt to evoke a tapestry of plant growth by use of the use of cross-rhythms between the left and right hand, in the distinctively intense ancient Greek Dorian Mode. This video again features my newly installed lyre pickup and FX pedal combo, which now allows me to record in real time, pretty much all the effects I previously had to spend hours doing in post production with my Digital Audio Workstation - the entire video, from the inital idea of the melodic themes to filiming with nothing more hi tec than my cellphone, took less than an hour! Both my earlier release, "The Ancient Roman Lyre" and this one, feature the same glassy purity of tone, conjured up by my 10-string lyre, hand-made in the USA by Marini Made Harps. By pure serendipity, this amazing sounding instrument looks almost identical to a Roman lyre depicted in a 3rd century mosaic found in from Tarsus, Antioch, of Orpheus taming the beasts with his lyre (as featured on the album cover). The theme of the album, is a musical exploration of Stoic meditation - the pieces in "Musica Lyra" expresses emotions of sorrow, grief, inner turmoil and regret, which through philosophical stoic meditation, we ultimately can learn to live with, once we accept and live with the stoic ideal of "Amor Fati" - the love of fate, and to feel inner harmony, no matter what any pantheon of ancient gods might have in store for us, through the enigma of our conscious existence through the journey of life. Stoicism, although having its origins in ancient Greece, was also embraced by the philosophers of Classical Rome. Indeed, the emperor Marcus Aurelius, was himself a renowned stoic philosopher and writer on the subject: “Accept the things to which fate binds you and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart.” - Marcus Aurelius In setting the sombre stoic theme of this album, in this piece, I attempt to create an atmospheric musical evocation of tears and grief in this mournful piece, by use of the ancient Greek Hypodorian mode (the equivalent intervals as A-A on the white notes of the piano, but, heard here in the intense focus bestowed by the use of just intonation) Using harmonics, I attempt to create the sharp feeling of cold rain and all its connotations of sadness. According to the timeless folklore, Nero famously played his lyre to accompany the Lament he sang as Rome burnt in the Great Fire of Rome in 64CE: whether this event was fact or fiction is irrelevant - the concept of this piece, is to evoke upon my own lyre, what Nero's famous lament may have actually sounded like... In Greek mythology, Charon was the ferryman who transported the souls of the deceased across the river Acheron to the Underworld. Payment was required to cross; souls who were unable to pay risked wandering along the shores of the river for a century! This piece attempts to evoke a feeling of sinister darkness & foreboding by the formless improvisatory nature of the track, which features again, my own chromatic variation of the ancient Greek Dorian Mode; as also featured in track 3, "The Sorcery of Circe" & track 9, "The Hex of Hecate". The more unsettling, more percussive attack heard in this piece, is courtesy of my carved wooden plectrum, which opens up an entirely different soundscape to the slightly thicker timbre, heard in the rest of the album, which featured a plectrum made of carved goat’s horn. The lyre featured in this performance has a resonator fashioned from a foraged Greek land tortoise, with goat skin soundboard - custom made in modern Greece, by Luthieros: https://www.luthieros.com About the closest thing to taking the 2,400 year old Elgin Lyre out of its display cabinet at the British Museum & actually performing on it! This piece hopefully demonstrates the wilder sounds the recreated tortoise shell lyre is capable of, which when using a combination of strummed drones by blocking specific strings with the left hand, whilst opening specific blocked strings with the required left hand fingers to create a strummed melodic line. In ancient Greek mythology, Satyrs were rustic fertility spirits of the countryside and wilds. They consorted with the Nymphai (Nymphs) and were companions of the gods Dionysos, Hermes, Hephaistos, Pan, Rhea-Kybele and Gaia.
