In 2006, they fell in love with the derelict warehouses hidden between the centre of Antwerp and the old military hospital (nowadays “Groen Kwartier”). Before the start of the renovations, they decided to make the location available to various artists and musicians, resulting in a colourful and lively atmosphere. Inspired by similar places in Berlin or New York, they created a unique ecosystem where work is combined with sports, leisure and ... urban farming. In 2017, a mix of 25 businesses established themselves on the new PAKT site. Chefs, brewers, baristas, coffee roasters, models, sports enthusiasts, digital centipedes and sustainable initiatives found their way to the site. A different universe was born in the heart of Antwerp. In 2017, some 100 people from the neighbourhood started to grow their own vegetables and herbs on the rooftops. Living architecture is defined as the use of forces and possibilities given by natural living organisms to help and build low-cost and sustainable construction. Living architecture is not a new concept as it has been used for centuries. A live architecture house grows, builds, and repairs itself; it changes with the seasons; it uses the forces of nature and is in harmony with its environment; it favors biodiversity and natural equilibrium; it has low cost and does not require considerable workforce or industrial material; carbon free and waste free; returns to nature when no longer in use; enables sustainable and balanced mankind development. A new envelope material with little to no carbon impact is totally different compared to what’s used in more traditional regular houses. Findings demonstrate that such a house is not only feasible but also rational and beneficial from the economic and environmental perspectives. A family living house usually has two parts with two different functions. One is the structure, which is the part that enables the house to stand against environmental solicitation as well as its own dead load. The other is the envelope, which creates a closed cover that protects its inhabitants mainly from wind, coldness, and wild animals. Nature offers many interesting ways to create the two elements. This Lightweight House was entirely Self-Built and made of Yurt Textile and Wood (and is mobile as well) This house was self built by one person for his family of four, between the trees of an underused garden that was reactivated as shared, productive land. Is it possible to build your dream home yourself, without compromising on your financial freedom, nor on the natural integrity of the site? The answer shown here lies in techniques that make construction very light, easy and accessible. And at the same time: beautiful and comfortable, all in a spirit of community, resilience and harmony with nature. This wood-based construction is so light that it doesn't need foundations. In fact, it is entirely dismountable, and assembled with the act of ‘unbuilding’ in mind. After a certain amount of time the structure will be taken apart, reused (or sold) for another project and leave absolutely no trace behind on site. The garden will be given back to nature. This allows for an alternative approach to the notion of property. Rather than buying a vacant lot and ‘consuming’ it for its domestic needs, the couple partnered with the owners of an existing property (an old farm) in a win-win agreement to help revive the underused garden, restore the adjacent atelier and reconnect with the village. And so was the project founded on solidarity. It was self-built without any heavy machines, with the help of family and friends. Applying the construction methods and materials commonly used in modern yurt construction: elevated wooden floor, modular structure with natural insulation, textile cover. The structural modules were prefabricated by a local yurt company, following their usual standards – but applying them in a radically new, creative way. About the relation to the ground: Below the floor plate there is a 20-30 cm space to the ground, through which air can flow freely. The resting points are adjustable plastic elements that prevent moisture from being transmitted to the wooden structure. As for how long this house will last, future will tell. But indeed it is not designed to stand for 100 years (quite to the contrary, it could be dismantled and moved every 5+ years) The house is nearly 3 years old now, and seems to be ageing rather well (after quite a few storms, and even some serious flooding in the area last summer) About regulations: Indeed often a sticking point with alternative building, which by essence challenges the norm(s). Those sticking points were transparently acknowledged and discussed with the municipality: no energy certification, no fire truck access, no connection to sewage... Those points were worked out by showing what the project did foresee (such as that simple waste water treatment system, which was examined and deemed fit). The municipality then granted permission on the grounds of this project being temporary, that it will be dismantled after the 5y term if issues arise, and that it can not be rented out without a specific permit (which guarantees that it stays a non lucrative endeavor) Unfortunately location info will have to stay private, to guarantee the privacy of all the people involved. Alternative construction methods such as wood frame houses, A-frames or A-frame houses, the use of loam, earth walls, passive houses, alternative heating sources and recycling will be discussed in this series of videos. The alternative building is mostly understood under the denominator 'bio-ecological building' (also called sustainable building) and this can be done in different ways. You can also build a building with well-known building materials such as brick, sand-lime brick, or natural stone that can perfectly carry the bio-ecological label, only if no hazardous waste or chemical substances have been added. Building with solid wood or a wood frame construction can also be a perfectly bio-ecological construction method. However, with this you have to be careful: most companies (usually readymade house builders) treat the wood with toxic chemicals against insects and mould. However, there are also a number of 'typical' 'bio-ecological building methods', which are used by far fewer builders and architects. The earth house, inspired by the most advanced environmental practices, is intended to contain clean energy, water recycling and aquaponics garden. Text by owner/builder Hamad Nazzal, November 2017 Last summer, I started constructing Mafraq Domes, an ambitious plan to build the first entirely environmental home in Jordan. The domes located in Mafraq – 60 Km. northeast Amman- is built out of earth, straw, goat hair and lime stone: a traditional building recipe which had been used for hundreds of years. The earth house, inspired by the most advanced environmental practices, is intended to contain clean energy, water recycling and aquaponics garden. One major goal behind this structure is to present a natural healthy resident as an alternative to current building trend in the country which depends on concrete and cements; a method proven to be both costly and harmful for earth and soul. This type of construction is in line with the approach of self-sufficiency and bottom up economy. It works with nature rather than against it. Such a building evokes the activities which liberate man from depravity of modern days’ economy, and reduces human harm to the earth and provides a life in dignity. Natural soil as construction material creates a healthy space for body and soul where its positive energy absorbs the negative mental energy of human body. The natural wall insulation warms the house in the winter and chills it in summer; a great passive energy regulator. In addition, the hand work calls for cooperation values among society which recalls cooperation traditions in our not far history. Among the difficulties I have faced during the process are lack of experience in this field (the construction of buildings out of natural materials almost completely disappeared during the 20th Century); community reluctance and lack of fund. After completing more than 70 percent of the basic building (it composes of 5 domes and relatively large kitchen – total building space is 230 square meters), the domes had reached a critical stage today. The constructing of the home has been halted, chiefly due to the shortage of resources. Before that, the building process received good media coverage. Part of the text as spoken in the video: 6 years ago we started traveling with our family. I'm an artist and I combine working as an artist with traveling as a family. When we started in 2017, there were a lot of things we wanted to explore: living closer to nature with a smaller footprint and educating the kids. In the beginning it was all new for us and now we are kind of adapted to this life and we love this nomadic lifestyle because it it's really rewarding, it gives us a lot of time with the kids and to be around in specific beautiful places and that's really nice. We are a family of 5, me and my partner Maaike and together with our 3 daughters. Fenna is the oldest and there's Alba the middle one and Isolde is the youngest Fenna is 10, Alba is almost eight and Isolde is 6 six years old, so we started traveling when she was a few months old. So this is our whole life, we're traveling which is nice, and it all fits in the little van behind me. I built 2 Vans, so the first one I built in 2017, it was slightly larger and we traveled two years with this one, no that one and then eventually I built another one and I kind of improved it. I've had a lot of ideas which I wanted to improve, then I built this one, I built it within six months and this one is actually smaller than the other one, it's lower, it's less wide and better insulated, a better wood stove, a better battery pack and more solar panels, so we're way better prepared for off-grid living and it really works. So we've been gone for a couple of years now, we've been all the way up to Lapland and had temperatures of -34 °C/-29°F and the car was perfect. We have a little heating system in the engine for when we start traveling in these temperatures, then you start off the heating system and the engine heats up a little bit. The insulation works really well, we used sheep wool and we used lots of second hand and recycled material, so there's an old floor which I cut in small planks and used it on the ceiling and we used lots of old materials. It was just a white transport box and there was no feel or no atmosphere in it, so I found these old windows from a scrapyard, old windows and old doors and that brings a lot of atmosphere to the Van, that's how I created the style and feel I wanted. It's our home, it's our only house and it's nice to be in when you're in remote places, it's really nice to have a place which is really comfortable and cozy and warm, so we kind of succeeded in that. This is our home, it's always there wherever we are on the road. It's small but we experience a large freedom just to be outside. Of course it has challenges because the space is small, so you need to take care of yourself and of the children that also mentally you have enough space to breathe, so you need to be strict to go out whenever you need for instance, but the quality of life is really good. Because we spend so much time together we really experience every moment of the children, every second and that's a very rich life. I would say my kids, well I can see that they really enjoy the freedom of this life, so whenever we arrive at a spot, they just go out and explore and this could be a beach or a forest or a small village, they are just very curious and they just love to be part of this of this team of our family.
