In the exam room, try talking to parents about the unique window when babies are drowsy, but awake. Pause and reflect - Taking a moment can give parents the pause they need to respond to their child in a thoughtful and controlled manner instead of a reactive or impulsive one. In doing so, the parent is co-regulating with a dysregulated child and modeling their own self-regulation. 2. Connect - When parents are attuned to their child's emotional state and make them feel seen, safe and supported, they are better able to defuse big feelings. Connecting doesn't mean that parents are giving in to the child, just that they can weather the child's emotional storm. 3. Label emotions - Helping children to name their emotions is the first step in understanding them. For example, parents can say, "It's frustrating when you can't have what you want," or, "I know it makes you feel sad when I have to go." 4. Redirect - For children under 2, it is often easier to move their attention from the source of their distress to another object of attention than to address or resolve the distress more directly. 5. Ask for the desired behavior - Every negative behavior has a positive opposite - an alternative and positive behavior. Here’s why: Watching together (at ANY age) allows caregivers to make screen time interactive - by asking questions, connecting images and storylines to real life, and helping children to interpret situations. This can build connection, aid attention, and help to ensure that children are engaging with content in a healthy way. For some families, this may mean: 1. Having shows on a TV in a public place, instead of giving a child a phone or ipad 2. Food waste and constant clean-ups may drive parents to spoon-feed their toddlers, but research shows there are important benefits in having toddlers practice feeding themselves. Suggest to parents that they consider serving smaller portions at a time, introducing utensils, and encouraging messy play elsewhere - like in the sandbox or bathtub. Remind caregivers that tantrums are normal and expected at this young age; toddlers still need a caregiver's help to calm down, and aren't trying to misbehave. A few tips to share with families: 1. Stay calm so their child can be calm. 2. Provide comfort to their child (that doesn't mean they have to give in to a toddler's demands). 3. Show their toddler that they can tolerate their distress by naming their hard feelings but not fixing the situation. 4. Use redirection to help move their toddler's attention to something else. </video> <video> Discussing Lying Description: Lying is a common behavior among 4-5 year olds, but it ISN’T fun for parents. Caregivers can overreact to lies, and resort to punishment, threats or harsh responses. To help them to understand lying developmentally, you can reassure parents that lying demonstrates critical thinking skills and a new understanding and interest in the difference between fantasy and reality. When families are in sync, the child or parent does something and the other responds by matching their behavior, emotional state and physical rhythm. Being attuned in this way promotes connection and relationship building. In your next visit, try modeling synchrony by matching a baby's mood with your voice and response.
