All operated by one of the organizers of the original home cinema conventions, the British Film Collectors Convention which is still ongoing today and has now also spawned the newer Film Is Fabulous shows and events. <video> ALIEN ROMULUS 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW Description: 4K UHD Blu-ray review of the 2024 movie 'Alien Romulus' directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by Ridley Scott. There is much to admire about this four sequel to the original 1979 film but it garnered mixed reactions during its theatrical run. I suspect there are a few elements within it's 1 hour and 59 minute running time that fans of the series will take some time to get used to because there were one or two things that I wasn't particularly enamoured with. However, having watched all the extra feature documentaries I think I have a better appreciation for Alien Romulus now and will enjoy it even more when I finally watch it for a second time. Image aspect ratio is approximately 2.40:1. Sound is Dolby Atmos on the 4K disc in the pack and DTS 7.1 on the Blu-ray. </video> <video> SIGNS (2002) 4K UHD REVIEW + LATEST 4K PURCHASES Description: M. Night Shyamalan's 2002 alien invasion classic. I think the confined nature of this great film was influenced by George A. Romero's 'Night of the Living Dead'. It has that same atmosphere about it but it certainly does not come across as any sort of copy to that earlier great film. This is a very good 4K home video release which, for me, is like having a personal 35mm print but without the 35mm projector to screen it. The fine grain, beautiful image quality is just like I would have expected to see a master print in a premiere house West End cinema. Image aspect ratio is 1.85:1 and the sound is DTS-HD 5.1. Running time is 1 hour and 46 minutes. There appears to be an error on the back of the box which states the 4K disc is '1080p High Definition' so perhaps more comprehensive proof reading is required before putting the slip covers and inlays into production. The Blu-ray appears to be the original, early Blu-ray with a new disc face printed on it as it is vastly inferior to the 4K disc and comes with a different menu structure as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 assuming the box is correct about that. Also included in this video are my latest purchases. I talk in quite some detail about Alfred Hitchcock's 'North By Northwest' owing to its VistaVision and dye-transfer Technicolor origins (hence why the 4K disc image quality is exceptional) and also the French 1953 Black and White thriller 'Wages Of Fear'. </video> <video> FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA 4K UHD REVIEW Description: George Miller's 2024 prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road but this time starring Anya Taylor Joy and Alyla Brown as Furiosa. Filmed in higher resolution than the movie of nine years earlier but strangely does not quite match up to the excellent image quality of the earlier video. It is still very good though and one of the better movies shot on digital video in my 4K disc collection. Image aspect ratio is 2.40:1 (approximately). Sound is Dolby Atmos but with a menu option for 5.1 although I found the Dolby Atmos default did not suffer the occastional incoherent dialogue within the 5.1. Only the 4K disc in this pack but all the extra features are contained on that single disc. I also take a first look at my latest 4K purchases: Alien Romulus and Signs, as well as a look at a bit of a Christmas Blu-ray pack issued by the Royal Opera House some years ago which is the Tchaikovsky classic ballets of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. I thought this set might give people a late idea for something different to watch over Christmas. Well, anything's got to be better than Eastenders! </video> <video> EXORCIST III 4K UHD REVIEW + LATEST PURCHASES Description: 4K UHD Blu-ray review of the Arrow Films The Exorcist 3 release. This comes with a 'Director's Cut' version on a separate Blu-ray disc but is not of comparable quality to the 4K disc. Exorcist 3 was originally released in 1990 (I believe it was 1991 over here in the UK) and directed by William Peter Blatty who wrote the original novel The Exorcist. This film is therefore the true sequel to that great 1973 film as Blatty and Friedkin proposed the storyline as a follow up shortly after the success of The Exorcist but it was apparently rejected. Blatty therefore used it as a novel titled 'Legion'. Aspect ratio is approximately 1.85:1 and sound is Dolby Stereo but with an option via menu for DTS HD 5.1. There are two versions of the original Dolby Stereo soundtrack as a clean up was carried out to it in 2023 and this is also included as a menu option. Running time is 1 hour and 50 minutes. Masses of extra features on the 4K disc which are not duplicated on the standard Blu-ray. I mistakenly inserted the Exorcist II The Heretic poster for the estimated budget and box office gross sequence but I'm unable to correct this now the video is live. Sorry about this incompetence. The perpetrator has been kicked up the backside! </video> <video> ALIENS 4K vs. SUPER 8 PRINT + FULL ALIENS COLLECTION Description: Please note that glimpses of the Super 8 print of Aliens are shown in this video for illustrative purposes only. Excellent image quality owing to the original VistaVision shoot. There are quite a few soft focus shots possibly due to the first iteration of VistaVision this film was shot with, namely a pair of 1920's 'Natural Color' cameras which had been adapted to facilitate the 8 sprocket wide 35mm horizontal shooting process. Sound has been re-worked into DTS-HD 5.1 but the original mono sound is available via a menu option. Aspect ratio is 1.85:1 and the running time is two hours. Extras are all on the Blu-ray only. Shows commenced on the Friday evening and carried on until late into the night on the Sunday. The Sunday itself hosted the main convention with dealers from all over the UK setting up stall to tempt the film enthusiast with their wares. It was also the day for the famous Blackpool film auction which is more popular today than it has been in a very long time. No trip to Blackpool in November would be complete without taking in the famous illuminations along the Golden Mile and also taking a ride on the famous trams. An absolute joy to see it again on 35mm film and also to hear it with THX sound. Wonderful! The pair of us have both been film collectors for probably more than 50 years and have multiple copies of Aliens on film and myriad home video releases between us. Aliens has never been one of the best looking films and this may be the reason why home video reviewers have never been entirely happy with home video releases of this title and the latest of those, the 4K, has probably caused the most angst of all. Is this vitriol directed at the new release justifiable? We discuss that and just about every element of the film on screen from both the 4K and the 35mm. Twisters is not exactly the greatest film ever made but it's possible that after the disappointment of a first viewing it may prove to be more enjoyable on repeat. At the time of writing, that remains to be seen as far as I'm concerned. The 2.40:1 (approximately) image quality is good but not exceptional. Not as good as the 1996 film and neither is the sound through my THX Ultra system. It may be different on different systems and despite image and sound not being up to the standards of yesteryear the sound will probably be impressive given that it's a storm film as these were simply made for surround sound. Default sound is Dolby Atmos but with an option for Dolby Digital 5.1 via the menu. Running time is 2 hours and 2 minutes. At the end of this video is the preview for the next video which has been shot at Simon Nicholls home cinema so that we could directly compare the recent 4K home video disc release of ALIENS with a 1986 35mm general release print. That one will be COMING SOON! </video> <video> A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4K UHD REVIEW Description: 4K UHD Blu-ray release of Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic 'A Nightmare On Elm Street'. Image aspect ratio is 1.85:1, sound is Dolby Atmos but the original cinema mono sound can be selected via a menu option. Running time is 91 Minutes. In this video I talk about my own history with 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' and what it was like to see it at the Leicester Square Theatre in 1985 when it was first released here in the UK. I also show the VHS home video tape releases and the NTSC LaserDisc for the sixth film which included the impressive anaglyph 3D conclusion, albeit not as impressive as I'd seen it at the Leicester Square theatre which by then had been duplexed and re-named the Odeon West End. Also included is a look at the Leicester Square cinemas today plus the Odeon on Shaftesbury Avenue where I saw many great films over the years but as I made this video it seemed to be in the process of being demolished. The terminal decline of cinema in the UK continues. </video> <video> TWISTER 4K UHD BLU-RAY REVIEW + LASERDISC + SUPER 8 Description: 4K UHD Blu-ray review of the 1996 blockbuster directed by Jan De Bont. The colour byas has been altered for this home video release, possibly because the green hue during the storm sequences was not possible to fully achieve it successfully using colour filters during the physical film days. Computer video editing and grading has facilitated myriad tinkering which was previously not possible. I know this film too well and therefore would have preferred it to more closely resemble the film prints and the subsequent home video releases up to this point. I compare the 4K to the LaserDisc and also briefly show the Twister Super 8 trailer for illustrative purposes. One thing I didn't mention in this video is that the final shot as the end titles are about to start is of noticeably sub-standard quality. Initially I just thought this was because an optical composite was coming as the titles were about to be superimposed over the top (i.e. two film elements filmed onto a new third element to create the final composite) but it was so comparatively poor that I also think that the obvious CGI added to this shot added an extra detrimental layer to it. I know some people will claim that the 'transfer' was somehow messed up at this point but this is how it would have been made in 1996 and nothing to do with the automated cine to video transfer scan nor the subsequent all-important mastering process.
