It is situated 38 miles (61 km) north of Dundee between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. It is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed at a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides and cured salmon in medieval times. With a population of approximately 12,000, the town functions as a port, but the major employer is GlaxoSmithKline, recently saved from closure.[1] The skyline of Montrose is dominated by the 220-foot (Bad rounding here{{#invoke:Math|precision_format| 67.056 | 1-1 }} m) steeple, designed by James Gillespie Graham and built between 1832 and 1834. Montrose is a town with a wealth of architecture, and is a centre for international trade. It is an important commercial port for the thriving oil and gas industry. Vast carpets of white nodding flowers can often be seen in old deciduous woodland and one of the best places to see them locally is at the House of Dun. As an added incentive to get out and enjoy the returning spring, the Angus Members' Centre of the National Trust for Scotland is having its annual Snowdrop Afternoon on Sunday (March 6) at House of Dun, where tea and freshly baked scones will be available in the Saloon from 2 to 4pm. There will also be plants for sale - a few miniature daffodils, small purple and yellow irises, primroses and primulas. A few shrubs which are rather large to pot up will be available bare-rooted along with fruit bushes - summer and autumn rasps and strawberries may be available, small blackcurrant and redcurrant, and a few of the goji berry. Ludlow Castle is a partly ruined uninhabited medieval building in the town of the same name in the English county of Shropshire. It stands on a high point overlooking the River Teme and in the Middle Ages it was an important strategic stronghold for control of the Welsh Borders, and at times the seat of English government in Wales. The castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy in the late 11th century. Possession of Ludlow Castle descended through the Lacy family until 1115 by which point had Hugh de Lacy died without any children and his property taken over by the king. Pain fitzJohn married Hugh de Lacy's niece, Sybil, and through her acquired a good deal of the family's lands. During the Anarchy Gilbert de Lacy, Sybil's cousin, laid claim to the family's estates and during the course of the civil war control of the castle change hands several times. Gilbert regained the property and control of Ludlow Castle once again descended through the Lacy family. In the late 12th and early 13th centuries Ludlow Castle was taken into the care of the crown on multiple occasions to ensure the family's loyalty. The family owned the castle until the 14th century, when it came into the possession of the Mortimers through marriage. Early in the 14th century, the castle was enlarged into a magnificent palace for Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, then the most powerful man in England. The earls of Powis began renting Ludlow Castle from the Crown in 1772, and bought the structure in 1811. The castle and it has descended through the family since and is owned by The Trustees of the Powis Castle Estate on behalf of the family of the earls. Now open to the public, the castle is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument Clun Castle is a ruined castle in the small town of Clun, Shropshire. Clun Castle was established by the Norman lord Robert de Say after the invasion and went on to become an important Marcher lord castle in the 12th century, with an extensive castle-guard system. Owned for many years by the Fitzalan family, Clun played a key part in protecting the region from Welsh attack until it was gradually abandoned as a property in favour of the more luxurious Arundel Castle. The Fitzalans converted Clun Castle into a hunting lodge in the 14th century, complete with pleasure gardens, but by the 16th century the castle was largely ruined. Slighted in 1646 after the English Civil War Clun remained in poor condition until renovation work in the 1890s. Today the castle is classed as a Grade I listed building and as a Scheduled Monument. Jim had heart problems and had been under medical care since going into hospital in December-he had hoped to get out but sadly ended up back in ICU where he quietely slipped away on the 18th March-he andDallas were two of my first friends on Youtube and were always first to comment on any new video-they are both now sadly missed. We quickly formed a strong friendship and one of us decided we were 'The Three Musketeers' and would be friends for life and we wrote and chatted on a daily basis and stopped using our real names- Jim became Porthos, Dallas became Athos and I am Aramis!! Sadly, Athos (Dallas) passed away in March 2010 and Porthos (Jim) had a major health scare in 2009 from which,thankfully he recovered although spent much less time on line.In December 2012 those problems returned and he sadly passed away in March 2013 He helped promote dozens of young Youtube talents and like Dallas was a really great guy and this was a tribute I did to him in 2010 and now resent to those who may have known him.
