Description: The Roosevelt Corollary justified U.S. intervention in the affairs of Latin American countries, which often led to periods of U.S. occupation. Until the end of the 19th century, the Monroe Doctrine was applied as a defensive mechanism to warn against European influence in the Western Hemisphere. President Theodore Roosevelt introduced an aggressive foreign policy change with an addition to the Monroe Doctrine called the Roosevelt Corollary. The Roosevelt Corollary instigated prolonged periods of U.S. military intervention in Latin American countries. These interventionist acts harmed relationships between the United States and Latin American countries, leading to modern efforts to regain trust. In 2017, the U.S. government decommissioned the Eero Saarinen-designed Cold War-era Embassy in Oslo, Norway. This exhibition explores Otero-Pailos’ artistic intervention on this modernist masterpiece, a landmark he helped preserve. In this video, the artist Jorge Otero-Pailos describes his process and the inspiration behind the exhibit. On display are sculptures created by Otero-Pailos using the steel fence that once guarded the embassy, an artifact the artist considered historically significant and that would have otherwise been destined for the scrapyard. It also showcases a book containing 51 limited edition prints, some of which are framed and displayed on the walls. The prints are inspired by the diplomatic treaties signed between the United States and Norway, as are the titles of the sculptures, which are derived from these historical documents. This exhibition runs concurrently with "Analogue Sites," Otero-Pailos’ public art exhibition on Park Avenue in New York City. The installation, on view through October 2024, comprises three of the larger sculptures created out of the fence. They are located on East 53rd, East 66th, and East 67th Streets, near the notable landmarks of the Seagram Building, and the Park Avenue Armory. Otero-Pailos conceived these artworks in order to spark a national conversation about the preservation of Cold War U.S. embassies, which were originally designed to encourage goodwill towards the United States through their freely-accessible public spaces. The exhibition comes at a moment when many of these embassies are being decommissioned and sold, and calls for reimagining their future while honoring their original intent. Description: The U.S. Foreign Service supports the U.S. Department of State at its locations across the world. Foreign Service Officers are selected and complete training in Washington, DC. Each of these officers has a unique function in carrying out American foreign policy. This video looks at the State Department’s Foreign Service. The event included a discussion with Executive Producer Debora Cahn of Netflix's new hit series, The Diplomat, and Ambassador Beth Jones, one of the real-life diplomats who inspired the series. Debora Cahn and Ambassador Jones discussed the series at the event, attended by many other real-life ambassadors who had been interviewed as part of research for the show. Coopersmith served as a public member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations General Assembly during the Jimmy Carter administration and is now a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. This evening celebrated the National Museum of American Diplomacy (NMAD), the first-ever museum dedicated to telling the story of the history, challenges, and practice of American diplomacy. Supported through private donations and public funding, NMAD invites the public to discover diplomacy and its impact on everyday life. The occasion also highlighted the establishment of its Citizen Diplomacy Collection project, which will showcase the vital role private citizens can play in advancing diplomatic relationships. The new Netflix political thriller, The Diplomat, follows the main character Ambassador Kate Wyler (portrayed by Keri Russell), as she is suddenly assigned to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom and must defuse international crises while adjusting to her new place in the spotlight. How realistic is the show’s depiction of diplomacy, and what is the backstory of how it came about? Debora Cahn is an American writer and producer of television and film. Before creating The Diplomat, she was an executive producer of the Showtime series Homeland as well as a producer of Grey’s Anatomy and as both writer and producer on The West Wing. Ms. Cahn has won two Writers Guild of America Awards and has received multiple nominations. Ambassador Beth Jones is an American diplomat whose career has spanned some of the most consequential diplomatic issues over four decades. She served as U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan, as well as Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia. Ambassador Jones designed U.S. policies for NATO and European Union countries, Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
