This long lost and abandoned location has always been difficult to find artifacts but today I had the big 12 inch search coil on my Tekentics G2+. Reading the landscape history at this deserted location keeps me detecting right around the root cellar because the land was never improved and today at great depths I dug up a couple of beautiful 1700s artifacts. I have been exploring and metal detecting this old piece of abandoned colonial land here in NH for one time and been finding clues that people were here hundreds of years ago. I have found and dug up a lot of old square nails with my Fisher F19 and they seem to be over a pretty big spread of ground. Reading the landscape history wise there are lots of ancient rock walls and a small paddock area out here. This would have been somebody homestead back in the 1700s and deserted sometime around 1800. Find old lost places like this is not easy on the side of a mountain where whatever land changes they made in the past are now all overgrown. I keep coming back because I am digging up old stuff here and there. I just can not seem to locate where the dwelling was. Out here we don't see cellar holes as much as we find a footprint with nail iron in it. I hiked a lot today and did find a couple of cool things so it was a worthy exploration and adventure. I was skirting the edge of a small mountain , seeing stacked rocks and reading the landscape history as I went. I got to a flat section and jumped over the wall to see the land was really nice and you could tell at one point in time hundreds of years ago it was a good spot. Then my eyes spotted a wash bucket sticking up out of the leaves and knew we found an old place. I started swinging my Fisher F19 and was h earring all kinds of metal objects in the ground. Dug up a bunch of iron things and then some old glass bottles that were from around 1915. At first I thought maybe old loggers site but I am thinking an abandoned cabin site from over 100 years ago. We are on old colonial ground so whoever built here a hundred years ago chose this location because it was good old ground. Explore, discover, read the land and find old places metal detecting. Nail iron in the ground I could hear with my Fisher F19 , so somebody was doing something here hundreds of years ago. I spent some time exploring the old deserted New England colonial farm lands reading the landscape history as I went and found something interesting. The massive megalithic stone wall at the back of this location was incomplete but staged with massive stones. you can see that somebody laid out the first rocks spaced apart and then late people filled in the gaps. Kind of rare to see out here and adds a bit of mystery to the old abandoned place. I could not locate a cellar hole but this one isolated area had old things in the ground and it was oddly enough off the side of the cart path by 100 feet or so. Long ago deserted and abandoned the colonial and early setters sites have disappeared from history but are still out there. Following the ancient megalithic walls that we have here they gives us lots of clues to what people were doing but also sometimes don't make sense. Stacked rocks for mies and miles and lost in the massive grid of squares you may just find a cellar hole. 1600s,1700s, and into the 1800s people settled and improved these lands and left their mark on the land. Today I go way up into the mountains exploring and reading the landscape history trying to decode this particular area. I found a small stone lined pen that was kind of backwards and open going up the mountain which is not the normal. I then show you a location of an early settlers site with very small root cellar that was very difficult to find a few years ago. With my Fisher F19 I did good and dug up a couple artifacts from the 1700s making the trip worthy. Yes the pocket tumbler is the pocket of my jeans where I carry around the slick large copper coins that I dig up over the season. Two of these unknown age old coins are rotten and in terrible condition and I never thought I would figure iy=t out and get some detail. All these coins are the large cent, king George II and III size coins but really could be anything from the 1700s or 1800s. Wait till you see this coin ! I spent a couple hours detecting this old deserted farm which was abandoned over 100 years ago and swung the Teknetics G2+ today with the large 12 inch search coil. Thats what I do and have been working on for years. Locating the old deserted homesites and mapping them through the process of constant hiking and exploring. the hills and mountains of NH have miles and miles of stone rock walls that are ancient structures and some consider megalithic. Most of these locations have been abandoned for hundreds of years and difficult to find. We look for cellar holes, root cellars, cart paths, clues in the rock walls and improved land. Well today I went way way up to the top of this spot at just under 200 feet and the stone walls were unreal going straight up the mountain Well on the way back I stopped at a small hole in the ground and first dug up a couple of old square nails and realized there were more stacked rocks in sorts of configurations. Well I got my confirmation by digging up a relic from the 1700s and no doubt this was an early settlers site. Reading the landscape history is what it is all about and metal detecting these old places will give you the proof you are searching for that is buried tin the ground. I was given a general area of where there may have been a cabin site because stove parts had been found by a friend hiking in the area. So I headed for the hills and bush walked my way through a mile of woods. I was given two clues for this adventure and exploration. A cut tree across an old trail and an ancient rock wall.......it is somewhere in-between these two things. Well I found it and as soon as I turned on my Fisher F19 metal detector the ground was loaded with nails, cans and other junk. Turns out the cabin must not have been there more than 40 or 50 years by what I dug up and what I could see. But it was a great test of lets see if we can find it and we did. I also got to hike through a lot of old deserted farmland that I had not seen before . This area was abandoned in the late 1800's so reading the landscape history alone was worth the expedition. I put it on my Fisher F19 today and hit the old sites. Cellar holes, overgrown fields and a mill site. All places from the 1700s and 1800s long ago deserted and abandoned since. Walking around exploring I had my first bit of luck in the old overgrown field which we have metal detected so may times. bit with these old places you always have to go back and it paid off with an old coin. Then I spent a lot of time hiking around reading the landscape history and ended up at the old mill site and dug me up a couple of nice old relics. While exploring and metal detecting I found a lost location from the 1890's deep in the forest here in New England. With my Fisher F19 & Teknetics G2+ metal detectors I spent 6 days out there digging. This old abandoned loggers camp is still on old colonial ground which is evident from the massive ancient rock walls surrounding the site. I did spend one day exploring and hiking reading the landscape history and there is a lot of stone walls. Finding old places like this metal detecting will turn up all kinds of artifacts and relics from the era like spoons, tools, knives, lanterns, buttons, coins, old bottles, pottery, harmonicas and more. This would have been really remote back in the 1800s and to this of the men living and working out here in the dark is pretty wild. So we dig up what they left behind and think about the history. I had put the large 12 inch search coil on just to see if I could find any good metal in the nail iron. There was a structure here in the early 1800s but no cellar hole. Just a footprint of nails you pick up when you detect over them. I was doing just fine pulling a few old bits and pieces at the long abandoned home site when I was shocked to hear a 78 signal, that's good ! When I started digging I realized it was more than half a foot deep, chain good. When I got it out of the ground it was small and at first I was not sure if it was a button or old coin. One swipe of the thumb and I could see it was silver, old silver ! Holy crap! its a half Reale and more specific a Mexico Spanish colony 1808 - 1814 coin. OMG that is amazing because we have spent so much time at this abandoned place detecting the wagon trails and rock walls. Finding old silver coins metal detecting is always a thrill and this First Texas products 12 inch coil does a fantastic job finding deep targets. A lot of them make perfect sense that colonial settlers built them and you can see the logic in the layout and build. But this massive grid of squares I have been exploring and metal detecting for years is different and does not make sense. Actually, there is a many history contradictions with the area between the charter grants, the town lines and land plots. Another interesting fact is the compass declination for the North South walls is way off from todays negative 13 degrees for this part of NH and it does not like up to what it would have been back in the late 1700s when they say these people settled and built these. It is just things to think about when exploring these old deserted and long abandoned places that have been overgrown with forest the last couple hundred years. I was hiking all over the place following the ancient stone walls and logging ruts but it was very quiet with the metal detector. Definitely old colonial farm and long ago deserted and overgrown now with forest and you have to go out and do some reading of the landscape history to figure it out. the section that I started finding old things in the ground was a deserted little patch of ground that must have been worked for farming. There was a few good relics to be found but also the signs of loggers from the early to mid 1900s. A great day of being out in the woods, walking along the old rock walls and finding old places. They may have dug small cellar holes, built some rock walls and even improved a bit of land. But most of these long ago deserted locations won't have barn foundation, a stone well or any improved land. Well that is this lost from history site I found more than likely abandoned sometime in the 1700s. I am back with my Fisher F19 metal detector to see what I can find for artifacts and relics. The day I found it I managed to dig up a Tombac button out of the chimney stack so we knew there was potential. Reading the landscape history at this spot you can easily see that it was a small dwelling and not much room to move away from it with the rough land conditions. So I detected, I dug and got just about every nail out of this place and one more great find. A remarkable location to be mapped for the sake of documenting and saving history and so glad I found it. Most of these sites up in the hills are old deserted colonial settlers sites abandoned sometime in the early 1800s. Old cellar holes, piles of field stones and stacked rocks all over the places. Today I went walking along a long stretch of wall with my Fisher F19 metal detector and the first thing I dug up was an old clothing button probably from the late 1700s....wow ! Reading the landscape history as I went along i found myself at the old farm lived upon well into the late 1800s and at places like this your bound to find more relics metal detecting.
