Overexposed color grading and mediocre audio for you, then! ----- I half promised myself to upload "Money Wars: Nerawareta Waterfront Keikaku", so here it is in its not so glorious transfer for all to see. It is the reason why I reared my head out today, "Nagareboshi no Okurimono" being an extra. It comes from a seinen oriented manga by Souichirou Miyagawa. It is strange to think how it was an animation production delegated to Gainax. It must have been something of a custom work for which they had little creative freedom, most likely. They can't get to work on ambitious projects like "The Wings of Honneamise" all the time, after all. The director is Yoriyasu Kogawa. His most major credits in the industry is as the director of "Mahou no Star Magical Emi" and as an editor on some entries of the "Time Bokan" franchise. I know very little about the backstory of the production, so I'll go on about my day without pipping any other word. Episode 02 [480p Quality] [Raw] Description: Disenchanted with the life ruled by other people's timekeeping, Yu gets on a motorcycle and rides down the length of Japan from his northern home. While his sister Megumi and girlfriend Aoi fret about him at home, he becomes a different person during his journey, helping out people he meets on the way and falling in love with pretty Tomo after an accident. ----- Medium's nature: LD-Rip Ripper: PPP-Raw Status: Least Concern. The image and audio are fair, mostly for what we are dealing with here. ----- Like usual, before I travel abroad, I take care to upload some new entries to the archives. "Hidari no O'Clock!!" predated "Golden Boy" by six solid years, and one has to wonder how much the original concept inspired it. The original manga was serialized in the defunct Monthly Shounen Captain magazine. It is an original creation of Kaoru Shintani, you also owe "Area 88" to. He also happened to have originally created "Goddamn", a car rally anime whose dialogues are so dumb I laugh at their mere remembrance. Toei Animation was responsible of the animation work of this short OAV series. Its two chief directors were Osamu Inoue and Hiroaki Sakurai. The former has very little major credit: "Yume kara Samenai" (Studio Shaft's very first non subcontracting work) and "Sailor Senshi Venus Five" a hilarious Hentai spoof of Sailor Moon. Th'e other man in this duo is by far the more proficient. He was an assistant director on the famous "Kidou Senkan Nadesico" as well as "Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoi yo!! Masaru-san" and billed as a director on "Di Gi Charat", among other lesser known pieces. </video> <video> Nagareboshi no Okurimono [480p Quality] [Raw] Description: One day, two boys receive a mysterious telescope from a shooting star that allows them to become whatever they want, and go on adventures to discover the secrets of the universe. The two of them are swept along on an eye opening journey as they learn from various masters of the natural world. ----- Medium's nature: DVD-Rip Ripper: ? Status: Least concern. The provided rip is very high quality in all regards. ----- Since this is a didactic anime geared towards children, it was evident that Shinano Kikaku would distribute it. As you know, it is the production venture of the late Soka Gakkai president Daisaku Ikeda, who passed away in december 2023. "Nagareboshi no Okurimono" was adapted from a child novel of the same name in 2006, penned by Ikeda himself, which ranks it up there as one of the most recent productions I have uploaded so far. On the plus side, its rip transfer is flawless although nobody seems to want credit for this very good job. As ever when it comes to Shinano's entries, it was animation produced by Toei Animation. For the chief direction, it got Yoshihiro Ueda, an episode director and storyboard artist from this same company. You see his name in relation with a lot of IPs from Akira Toriyama, such as "Dragon Ball" or "Dr Slump", but more notably he held these positions for 109 episodes of "One Piece"! Chikako Kobayashi took care of the screenplay. It was not a first to her for Shinano, as she was involved in "Bokutachi no Peace River" as well. As for the character-designer Youichi Onishi, he is known for his horrific work on "Kanon". Granted, given the Key Visual crap he had to compose with, the bug eyed horrors of this TV series wasn't much of his fault. He did a good job here. </video> <video> Treasure Gaust (Entire Series) [360p Quality][Raw] Description: yIn the town of Gaus, Takuto Gagaku, a kid wearing what oddly looks like a soccer jersey, investigates on mysterious phenomena related to creatures known as Gausts. ----- Medium's nature: TV-Rip Ripper: ? Status: Better transfer wanted if possible. The image quality is a little overexposed but still decent. Same goes for the audio. The time digits shown at the top left hints at the morning TV block nature of the short series. There's no home video release that I am aware of. No known English subs so far. ----- Hopping on the cash train of Pokemon, Digimon and the likes, here is an animated adaptation of Treasure Gaust, a toy/Nintendo DS game line created by Bandai. It has become a difficult entry to get by and no ripper dared to step in to get credit for the rip I am showing. As mentioned in the file information section, this series appeared in TV Tokyo's OhaStar children's morning variety program. I have only very few information about it. It was animation produced by SynergySP, a little known subcontractor who had worked on other game line related content like "Yuu Gi Ou! Zexal" or "Metal Fight Beyblade". They also dabbled in standalone titles as "Initial D Final Stage", Mitsuru Adachi's "Cross Game" or "Major". They seem very involved in either this type of productions or baseball themed works in general. The director is Yoshitaka Fujimoto, whose works are mostly targeted at a young adult audience, although he also does a lot of work as storyboard artist and episode director on children's shows. Is "Zettai Shougeki: Platonic Heart", "Joshikousei: Girl's High" or "Koikoi 7" ringing a bell? No? Well, I don't know what to add, then. </video> <video> Inochi Kagayaku Akari [360p Quality] [Raw] Description: An educational film whose themes are geared around women's societal issues, discrimination of the burakumin caste and the entrapment of disabilities. ----- Medium's nature: ? No known English subtitles as of yet. ----- "Inochi Kagayaku Akari" must not be confused with the Iyashikei from Magic Bus "Happy Birthday: Inochi Kagayaku Toki". As stated above, it is a rare educational anime, I stumbled upon during my recent research campaign. It was commissioned by the prefecture of Miyazaki, Kyushu, with the hope to raise awareness about various types of discrimination. Even though it's mostly forgotten today, it was meticulously crafted, in comparison to the average offerings of the genre. Being released in 1999, the official webpage no longer works, so I believe it's in everyone's best interest to shed more light on this culturally relevant piece. The reason why I am talking bout about this, is because "Toki no Daichi" was closely affiliated with the video game world through its publication of origin. Created by Miyuki Yama, it was serialized for a long time in Monthly Shounen Gangan, one of Enix's many manga compilation magazines. This 3 part OAV series was directed by Keizou Shimizu for Magic Bus. Mainly a chara-designer, he is still polyvalent and you can see his name attached as part time director or animation director to many entries among which "Legend of Galactic Heroes", "They were Eleven", "Cobra: the animation" (2010) or "Senbon Matsubara" I quoted in the previous upload and is due for a later induction in the archives. The chara-designer is Ken'ichi Oonuki, known as a co-founder of the Minami Machi Bugyousho studio. Before they sadly folded in 2009, you owe them "Mushishi" and "Terra e". A raw with solid image and audio quality. No known English subtitles as of yet. ----- Somebody whose username eludes me requested this animated movie. Since it was released the 26 november 1994 in the Japanese theaters, this upload acts as a 30th anniversary of sort. I owe my good friend WOWmd this very nice rip. It's either this or the awful offering of ARR, committed about a decade ago. It was then another urgent addition to the archives. The source is a novel from a children's literature author, Noboru Wada. Among the anime adaptations of his works, this one is the least rare of all. "Kimu no Juujika", another WW2 drama but set around the takeover of Korea by the Japanese army and "Eikou e no Spur: Igaya Chiharu Monogatari" a biopic about the first Japanese winter Olympics medalist, are both entries which would greatly benefit from induction here, but are virtually nonexistent online as of now. "Hoshizora no Violin" is a Mina, which means it has a lighter tone to accomodate family audience in opposition to heavier World War 2 themed works like "Hadashi no Gen". I have no information as to who are the main animation producer. However, the producer, Space Eizou, are known to have only produced this type of movies among which "Raiyantsuuri no Uta", "Sea Cat" and the already uploaded "Hi no Ame ga Furu". "Senbon Matsubara" seems to be the only exception to this pattern, being a movie set in the Tokugawa period. The director, Setsuo Nakayama (if the reading of 中山節夫 is correct), isn't particularly worth of note as this was his only known contribution. The character-designer, the late Yoshio Kabashima, was more experienced, on the other hand. His major contributions were an entire section of obscure animation I am probably going to showcase in the future. "I" can't believe how stupid human beings are and chronicles some of their most incredible foibles. I got you covered! This one didn't get the same level of care, which is surprising given how cats are the most popular pets in Japan. The only print I am aware of is HsA, and the rip has been done almost 11 years ago, so it was an urgent addition to the archives. The source is a comical novel, written by Natsume Souseiki. The TV Special went for the cheap and rather unique option of having as soundtracks Antonio Vivaldi's classical musical compositions. It was animation produced by Toei Animation, for broadcasting on Fuji TV. Rintarou (known in real life as Hayashi Shigeyuki) is its well known director. He is known for a variety of things, for planning and directing the Metropolis anime movie, to being the chief director on Leiji Matsumoto anime like "Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Herlock". He is primarily all about science-fiction, but every once in a while, he marginally captained projects like this one. the one composing screenplay was Takao Yoshizawa, an in-house storyboard artist and episode director of Toei. You have certainly seen his work on the first and second installments of Sailor Moon, various installments of Digimon and Transformers. Yes, you would be correct to suppose that I didn't upload Gakuentoshi Varanoir Joukan out of fondness for it. Instead, the second episode's time length was appraised with incertitude, so I believe it was fair game to call your attention, as my channel also doubles as an examination table of sort. Episode 02 was also the rarest of the two pieces by far, having no ripper credited for it and being difficult to find in decent quality. Then, after washing my hands, I not so proudly present this badly fermented piece of cheese, whose entire cast is perhaps 15 years old of average age. The director, Katou Taisuke, has sparse credits, mostly involved in other Idea Factory related projects as Run=Dim (13 episode TV series) or short OAV series as "Kingdom of Chaos: Born to Kill". It goes without saying, the production value is dangerously close of that of a fanime made for a convention, with the aggravating circumstance being that GVJ was commercially geared towards audience, as an acceptable benchmark of quality! It is quite stunning to think that Yoshiaki Tsubata, the freelance animation director on some episodes of Area 88, had part in this! </video> <video> Yoiko no Tanoshii Christmas [360p Quality] [Raw] Description: A direct-to-video collection of nine Christmas-themed music videos. ----- Medium's nature: VHS-Rip Ripper: ? Status: A crisper transfer would be appreciated. Image lacks definition but the audio quality is clear, which is what matters the most for a music video. No known English subtitles as of yet. ----- From the producers of "Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion" and "Azumanga Daioh: the animation", King Records! Yes, if the cover of the VHS was as dishonest as those of low budget DTV live-movies from the West, that's probably what it'd pompously clamor to attract purchases. Since I will not be anywhere near my computer during the Christmas festivities, I decided to leave you with this little musical by advance. It was already uploaded in Youtube one year ago, but since animated DTV never experience reprint, they get particularly rare over time. So, a backup certainly doesn't hurt. In addition of this, allow me to provide some backdrop information about the work as well... It was animation produced by Oh! Production, a little known contractor, you probably mostly know for the unanimously praised short "La Maison en Petits Cubes" and "Cello Hiki no Gauche". The songs were performed by the Hibari Children's Choir. You can then feel like this product was crafted with a certain degree of ambition. As if to hard confirm to this impression, the Chief-Director/Storyboard Artist/Art Director was the late Mukuo Takamura. Some of his best known works include the aforementioned "Cello Hiki no Gauche" and Nippon Animation's "Haha o Tazunete Sanzenri", part of the WMT series, both directed by Takahata Isao. He also had to his credit science-fiction anime franchises such as "Uchuu Senkan Yamato", "Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Harlock" and "Ginga Tetsudou 999". A young Norio Matsumoto also worked as an in-between animator in this. He is regarded as one of the best action animators in the recent decade. One of the highlights in his carreer was episode 133 of Naruto, which he did for the most part alone. </video> <video> Furiten-kun (1981 Movie) [480p Quality] [Raw] Description: Furiten is an unassuming salaryman, maybe a little too fond of horse-racing gambling and mah-jong. He's doing well for himself, except he tends to act more dumb than he actually is. He found a way to travel back in time to the Edo period, also trying every sport, dating his girlfriend Ikue, being robbed, and getting tangled up in gambling related issues. ----- Medium's nature:DVD-Rip (?) Ripper: ARR Status: Least Concern. For a ARR rip of a movie from 1981, it looks pristine. Image and audio quality are good as it likely is a DVD transfer. No known English subtitles as of yet. ----- It is time to share another product of my recent research campaign, Furiten-kun. I am starting with the 1981 movie because it is a prequel to the two part OAV series. The franchise's source is a four-koma gag manga created by Masashi Ueda. Although it is mostly forgotten today, it was once popular enough to be made into a motion picture, which is still worth of note. It was directed by Taku Sugiyama, on the behalf of Studio Knack. Sugiyama was a former employee of Mushi Production, a veteran of the industry active since 1958! His name was tied in the animation production of titles as "Fushigi no Kuni no Alice", "Fushigi na Koala Blinky", "Bosco Adventure" or the crime mystery "Satsujin Kippu wa Heart-iro" I ought to upload someday. As a more minor contributor, he was also involved in the making of "Tetsuwan Atom" (1963 series) and the scarce "Andersen Monogatari" TV series I am also going to share later on. He probably had connection with the chara-designer Kouki Miwa from the times they worked together on Tetsuwan Atom. Kouki was a young in-between animator, then.
