We’ll explore in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s “Discovery Files”. Kidneys are essential for keeping the body functioning. They cleanse the blood, maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, and help regulate blood pressure. But unlike the liver, bones, or skin, kidneys cannot fully regenerate or heal themselves. In a pair of new studies, NSF-supported researchers from the University of Pennsylvania are working to better understand kidney development. Kidneys are primarily made up of densely packed filters known as nephrons, the number of which varies as every kidney is different. The study found that close packing of nephrons creates mechanical stresses that may contribute to this variability. Understanding signals that drive nephron formation is one key to growing new tissues. In the 2nd study, the group proposed a new way to grow tissues by making up communities of 2 kinds of stem cells necessary to do so. One for Nephron filters and the other for the tubules that plumb them together.
