Channel Title: NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS) Channel Description: Established in 1981 by Cultural Medallion recipient Mr Alex Abisheganaden, NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS) is the region’s first Niibori guitar ensemble. Initially comprising only classical prime guitars, GENUS was later modelled after the Niibori Orchestra in Japan, becoming the pioneering guitar ensemble to showcase the distinctive and diverse musical possibilities of the Niibori method, which utilises a family of guitars with varying pitches. GENUS is proud to have performed a colourful repertoire, ranging from major classical works to contemporary Japanese pieces. As a pioneer in the local scene, GENUS aims to set the benchmark of musical excellence for local ensembles. GENUS is continually working towards promoting a greater love for guitar ensemble music in Singapore, so as to establish it as an integral part of the local arts landscape. Swinging to the Band” , “II. A Lamenting Breeze”, and “III. How’s Your Day?”. Movement I features a swing style and is developed in a myriad of ways, showcasing the various timbres of the different sections of the orchestra. Movement II, in contrast, prominently utilises harmonics to produce a contemplative and melancholic tone. Movement III begins with a new theme introduced in a pseudo rock groove that is repeated in different keys and instrumental combinations. A famous piano work from Claude Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque, “Clair De Lune”, meaning ‘Moonlight’, is an early example of Debussy’s Impressionistic style. In this arrangement by Alan Hirsh, the performers work to create a delicate sound for the melody and harmonies, while ensuring the bass notes resonate throughout. Coupled with the use of rubato, communication between performers is essential to convey the tranquil nature of the piece, creating a dreamy soundscape with a flowing melody and ethereal harmonies. "Nausica of the Valley of the Wind" is the theme song of the animated film of the same name. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where a toxic forest threatens the survival of humanity, the film follows the journey of Nausicaä, the princess of the Valley of the Wind, as she tries to protect her people and restore harmony between humanity and nature. The ensemble will be performing a jazz arrangement of the theme song, offering a refreshing twist to the familiar melody. This all prime trio arrangement by Masataka Sano brings the piece to life, maintaining the original’s vibrant energy while adding rich harmonies and intricate interplay between parts. The piece highlights the guitar’s unique timbre and qualities, featuring flamenco techniques. Being performed in a trio, individual players showcase their technical prowess with the control of their sound, adding their personal touch to shaping the piece. It was first recorded in 1959 by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Frequently covered by a variety of artists, the track is the best-selling jazz song of all time and a Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. Throughout the three movements of the arrangement, the same motif is rhythmically varied, inspired by different renditions, featuring changes in time signature and texture. The piece is first played in the classic swing beat, emulating the light touch of the original standard. It then transitions to a traditional African-inspired version, featuring multiple percussive rhythms. Ending off in a lively funk rendition, a strong and groovy bassline compliments the melody, driving the music to a climactic end. One of the earliest compositions by Niibori guitar stalwart Kengo Momose, Tsubasa paints a magical musical landscape through its masterful use of techniques such as tremolo. Tsubasa, meaning “wings'' in Japanese, conveys Momose’s belief that each person carries a set of “invisible wings” which help them to chase their dreams. The piece is dedicated to all those who have lost their “invisible wings'', in the hopes that they will rediscover their hopes and dreams. In Yuudai Hatanaka’s arrangement for guitar ensemble, different sections – bass, prime, and altos – each take turns playing the melody, adding a dynamic interplay of timbres. The contrasting textures created by these sections enhance the emotional range of the piece, enriching the listener’s journey through the music. As the music progresses, it builds to a more dense texture and upbeat tempo, culminating in a vibrant finale that immerses the listener. Composed in 3 movements, “Three Scenes of Japan” captures the essence of the hustle and bustle of a traditional Japanese festival. Movement II is performed entirely using percussive guitar techniques, mimicking the sound of taiko drums during a festival procession. The varied use of dynamics paired with constant, rhythmic knocking of the guitar bodies drums up anticipation for the beginning of the festival. The piece bursts into life with Movement III, featuring soaring melodies and a rhythmic intensity that lasts throughout the piece, representing the passion and energy of the festival. Movement III is inspired by the Yagibushi, a popular traditional Japanese folk song and dance. Originating from Suite Espagñola No. 1, “Sevilla” was originally composed for the piano before being transcribed for classical guitar and has remained an important work in the instrument’s repertoire. A vibrant and joyful piece, “Sevilla” is a Sevillanas, a Flamenco-influenced folk music and dance. Arranged here byYuudai Hatanaka, the introspective middle section features a solo part from each section, showcasing the wide variety of guitars in a Niibori orchestra. Established in 1981 by Cultural Medallion recipient Mr Alex Abisheganaden, NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS) is the region’s first Niibori guitar ensemble. Initially comprising only classical prime guitars, GENUS was later modelled after the Niibori Orchestra in Japan, becoming the pioneering guitar ensemble to showcase the distinctive and diverse musical possibilities of the Niibori method, which utilises a family of guitars with varying pitches.

GENUS is proud to have performed a colourful repertoire, ranging from major classical works to contemporary Japanese pieces. As a pioneer in the local scene, GENUS aims to set the benchmark of musical excellence for local ensembles. GENUS is continually working towards promoting a greater love for guitar ensemble music in Singapore, so as to establish it as an integral part of the local arts landscape.
