Duo Imbesi Zangarà Whispers by Carmelo Imbesi and Carmen Zangarà "Whispers is inspired by that inner voice with which we all confront ourselves when, emerging from the solitude of the virtual world, we reflect on our true selves, becoming at times a compassionate friend and at others a ruthless judge. This introspective journey, from which no one is exempt, has been the subject of study by philosophers, doctors, scientists, and religious figures. This is our translation into music.” (Carmelo and Carmen) “The listener is welcomed onto a sound carpet where suspended echoes of Debussian harmonies resonate. Evoked in the key moments of the piece, it defines the genesis, derivation, and epilogue of the conflict between the ‘I’ of reason and the ‘I’ of critical consciousness. The first guitar expresses its melody through a theme rich in pathos, constructing its narrative on the relentless rhythmic foundation provided by the second guitar, which, through brief counter-melodies and responses, emulates a restless state of mind tormented by itself. The central section looms heavy and violent: a timeless, dramatic chordal theme, with shouted triads imposing themselves over the underlying whispers, closing in a final poignant dialogue: a resignation to a state incapable of resolving its own conflicts. Section B is impetuous, featuring a tight, rhythmic struggle of non-acceptance fueled by the desire to reclaim one’s identity and mental strength. The two guitars challenge each other without respite, navigating rhythmic tensions and dissonant notes. Active as performer, musicologist, and educator, he has distinguished himself in all these fields. As a performer, he has won numerous prizes in International competitions (most notably the Alirio Diaz competition in Rome, the Indianapolis Matinée Musicale Competition, and the National Prize for the Arts in Italy). He is leading concert activities that have brought him to perform in many countries through Europe, America, Africa and Asia, and in prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. His music has also been featured by broadcasting companies such as RAI (National Italian Television), National Public Radio of Armenia, National Polish Radio, and Radio Nacional Argentina. Sandro Cappelletto, music critic of the Italian newspaper “La Stampa”, selected him among the most promising musicians of the new generation, and wrote: “Fierens well captures contrasts, sudden changes of writing, returning a rich sound, now bitter, now sweet, in a phrase and a ‘breath’ of the time of execution already very aware.” Carlo Fierens started the study of the guitar with his father Guillermo, an acclaimed international concertist. Emilia has performed for Omni Concerts, the South Bay Guitar Society, Austin Classical Guitar, and NPR’s From The Top. She has received awards from the Guitar Foundation of America and the James Stroud Guitar Competition. Emilia is also a filmmaker whose work has been screened at festivals in the U.S., Brazil, Beijing, Paris, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, and Costa Rica. Emilia enjoys studying Music History and Renaissance counterpoint. She is currently reading Richard Taruskin’s Oxford History of Music and the New Grove Dictionary of Music. Kiran Lee, 17, is a prizewinner in the 2024 Philadelphia Classical Guitar Competition and the 2023 Chicago Guitar Festival Competition and the First Prize winner of the 2022 Sierra Nevada Guitar Festival Youth Competition and the 2022 U.S. International Open Music Competition. She was a semifinalist in the 2024 James Stroud Classical Guitar Competition and was one of six performers invited to the 2023 Pre-College Guitar Virtuosos master class with Manuel Barrueco. Kiran opened concerts for Stephanie Jones and Gaëlle Solal at the South Bay Guitar Society. She is a student of Scott Cmiel at the Pre-College Division of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she also plays in the honors guitar quartet and the guitar orchestra. Her first teacher was Patrick O'Connell of the Silicon Valley Classical Guitar School. Kiran has played in masterclasses for Sergio Assad, David Russell, Meng Su, David Tanenbaum, Marc Teicholz, Ben Verdery, and Jason Vieaux. Kiran is a junior at Palo Alto High School and volunteers at the local Pets In Need animal shelter. Kiran plays a guitar built in 2022 by German luthier Dieter Müller. Roan Holmes, 17, studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with Scott Cmiel at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Precollege and has previously worked with Dr. David Chapman. Roan has won awards at the Stanislaus State University Guitarraganza Competition, the Bay Area Creative Youth Awards, and the Guitar Society of Montreal Next Generation Guitar Competition and the ENKOR International Music Competition. He is a senior in high school at The Athenian School and lives in Livermore CA. When not playing guitar, Roan is a competitive runner in cross country and track. The San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College has earned a national reputation for providing outstanding musical training to young people. The early childhood program, for students as young as age 4, taps the natural desire for movement, that all children possess, to impart a deep responsiveness to music. As students gain experience, the curriculum integrates private lessons with small chamber music groups, a guitar orchestra, musicianship courses, weekly performance opportunities, and master classes with the guitar worlds finest international artists. Scott Cmiel is a recipient of Artist Teacher Awards from the American String Teachers Association of California, the Romero Guitar Institute, and the Sierra Nevada Guitar Festival,and is widely acclaimed as an inspirational instructor of students with exceptional artistic achievements. His students have won top awards in national and international competitions including the American String Teachers Association National Soloist Competition, the Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition, the Christopher Parkening International Youth Competition, the James Stroud Classical Guitar Competition and the YoungArts Competition. Duo Imbesi Zangarà Tears of War by Carmelo Imbesi and Carmen Zangarà Tears of War is a neoclassical-inspired work that seeks to translate the drama and suffering of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine into music. This piece for guitar duo goes beyond the traditional boundaries of chamber music for guitar, transforming the instruments into a “soundtrack,” evoking powerful and harrowing images through a musical language that transcends simple composition and takes the listener directly into the heart of the conflict. The piece is characterized by heart-wrenching dissonances, broken strings, clusters, and percussive effects that imitate the sounds of war—sirens, bombings—all created without the use of electronics. The two guitars, typically associated with a more intimate register, shed their traditional role to become expressive tools capable of depicting the devastation and turmoil of war. The music resonates with anguish, rage, and sorrow, while also seeking to capture the essence of something broken within the human heart. Carmen Zangarà, discussing the genesis of the piece, states: “We always experienced war through the stories of our grandparents, in books, and in films about the Nazi horrors. It all seemed so distant from our modern times, made of social media and talent shows. But after the first attack, everything became terribly real. The drama that reached us left us stunned: talking about war in 2022? Has humanity learned nothing from the past?" The piece arose as a response to these questions and as an expression of the dismay and helplessness the composers felt. Carmelo Imbesi adds: “Tears of War describes very particular emotions. We tried to recreate everything that resonated within us every time we saw images of the conflict and heard the testimonies of survivors. Two guitars telling the story of a war—a music filled with unease, rage, and sorrow. But we feel there’s more. There’s something broken in those dissonances, in the distorted bells at the end, accompanying the resignation of the final phrase built on harmonics. It’s as if, with Tears of War, we wanted to bear witness to humanity’s repeated failure in the face of life.” On July 15, 2022, Tears of War received a letter of commendation from the Vatican, signed by Pope Francis, in recognition of its expressive power and its universal message of peace. Presenting the world's finest classical guitarists in concert since 1980. The Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit organization with the longest running and most extensive guitar series in the United States and is considered to be one of the foremost guitar series in the world. Although the series presents acoustic guitarists of all genres, such as flamenco, jazz and fingerstyle, the primary focus is on the classical guitar.

Omni presents not only the most celebrated virtuosi of our time but also the emerging artists and stars of tomorrow. The concerts take place in San Francisco's most prestigious concert venues, both intimate and grand and great efforts are made to insure accessibility to the entire Bay Area community, particularly students.
