Its eastern slopes are much more open lower down and give the shortest ascent, the chief reward of which are the superb views of the surrounding Assynt peaks. The western half of its ridge contains both of its two Munros. This section of the ridge makes a fine traverse with magnificent views; it may involve less scrambling than Beinn Alligin or Liathach, but compensation comes when Coire Mhic Fhearchair is reached during the descent; this is the most spectacular of all Torridon's corries. The ascent involves a pleasant walk in along the Fionn abhainn with good views of the prow of Meall nan Ceapairean on the way. The section of scree is steep but short and the route above this presents no difficulties. There are great views from the summit, particularly of Torridon to the north. TERRAIN Well constructed paths up the glen, then an easy to follow stony zig zag path to the bealach. Feeling good we decided to repack and head up Am Bodich which is at the start of finish of the Aonach Eagach depending on which way you choose to do it. Given the proximity to the Great Glen Way (Inverness - Fort William) it is quite possible to extend your route to/from Drumnadrochit to Inverness and enjoy a spectacular coast to coast trek. The AKW is recommended for experienced travellers and takes in a variety of landscapes with stunning views - ancient drove roads which used to take cattle to market from the west coast, deep lochs, towering glens, ancient woodlands, The Glen Affric National Nature Reserve and an optional stay at the Alltbeithe Youth Hostel the most remote in the Highlands. Some sections can be quite strenuous and there is in excess of 6000 feet of ascent over the course of the trail. Really enjoyed this one. Ben Starav is an imposing mountain which rears up steeply from the head of Loch Etive. Higher up it has some fine ridges and is a great viewpoint. Ben Starav is a tough ascent by any standards, but the route can be extended by the very fit. You could optionally include Beinn nan Aighenan as a detour, and after Glas Bheinn Mhòr to take in Stob Coire an Albannaich and Meall nan Eun - doing all five would be a huge challenge. The truth is we’ve had a bit of a time of it! However, we believe we really have turned a corner, together! I’ve done a new video and edited slightly differently from our normal offering. I let MrsO see it before uploading and she thinks, like me, that even the smallest amount of awareness of the menopause is a very valuable thing. Me, I think if us lads knew more about it life would be very much easier and make way more sense if we just knew what was going on. The minute I informed myself, it all started to get slightly more manageable. If you follow us you’ll know how much of a big step doing this route is for Lisa. We thought she’d developed a huge fear of heights! What we were actually experiencing was anxiety brought on by the menopause which had been sneaking up on us for a number of years! And I mean proper stealth, ninja style! 🥷 For the lads, this is very unsettling, especially when you don’t understand what the menopause can do to the ladies. For the ladies, this is life challenging and changing. We’ve had some big ups and downs recently which unfortunately came to a head. However, once we knew what was going on. We began to fix it! All credit to this amazing woman for the steps she took, steps which were very tough for her. A very independent and normally resilient woman eventually that needed a little helping hand. One that wasn’t mine! 🎥 Our latest little adventure film is dedicating to MrsO and all the other ladies that are working through the menopause. A little help and understanding goes a long way!! The following morning we walked around the loch to the bottom of Slioch and down towards Loch Maree then back to the carpark. A very nice loop in some remote wilderness. In all we walked around 20 miles.
