December 5, 2023, DePaolo and his friend met up to go rock hunting in the Inyo Mountains near the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. During the hunt, a rock shifted, and the boulder rolled and crashed into DePaolo, pinning his leg and pelvis under its weight. To make the most of their time out west, they decided to hit the road and visit Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon. After visiting Bryce, they made their way to the north rim of the Grand Canyon, but GPS threw them a curve. The main road to the north rim was closed, so the navigation system redirected them onto a smaller, less-traveled route. As they drove down the road, Klein’s trip began to take a different turn, and the road turned rough and muddy. The divers were assigned to a large underwater U-shaped pipe and had created a hyperbaric chamber to work and breathe normally while submerged. After entering the chamber, they removed their diving gear and began their first task: removing an airtight plug designed to prevent oil from escaping the pipe. However, the operation took a catastrophic turn. They planned a hike through Arthur's Pass in New Zealand. They slept at Carrington Hut and prepared for their big adventure in the morning. The plan was to cover 60 kilometers over three days, with nights spent in hiking shelters. Even in the A few hours into their hike, they encountered an unexpected obstacle: a large, wide sheet of ice had formed on the rocks, and climbing over it would have required crampons. They saw a path over the obstacle, which required some mild climbing. Confident in Sonia's natural ability in the mountains, Marnie believed they could make it. However, the route proved to be tougher and longer than Sheppeard had anticipated. After climbing for a few hours, Sonja struggled and forced them to rest on a ledge. Wanting to experience the country, they settled on the Routeburn Track. Before setting out, they stopped by the Department of Conservation office, where a ranger told them to reconsider. The snow was old but treacherous, and the forecast promised trouble. They shrugged off the warning, and on July 25, 2016, they parked their campervan and headed off, traveling light for the snowy conditions. They had no Crampons, snow shoes, ice axes, or a tent, relying on reaching the hiking huts along the trail. A forecast warned of worsening conditions, but the air seemed steady enough when they began. Then came the snow, and what should’ve been an hour’s walk took five, snow swallowing their path. They were in deep now and reasoned that turning back would be worse.
