One of the best fertilizers that you can put in your garden. They sell bags of kelp meal from California, ground up kelp, to add minerals to the garden. But if you live anywhere near the ocean, you can pick up some for yourself. And this is how you use seaweed in the garden. First thing we do is give it a rinse, because it's coming out of the salty ocean and we don't want that much salt in the garden. But all I'm going to do is give it a brief rinse, just to get the extra salt off of it. I'll do that again just in case we have anything really sensitive to salt. Along with the minerals of the ocean, we have lots of salt. But once you've rinsed the salt off the outside, I have read there are as many as 90 minerals that can be contained in seaweed. This is a cassava. It's a root crop from the tropics, which is where I live. And I planted this in here a little while ago and I am going to give it a boost of seaweed. This will give it lots of extra minerals and it's going to break down into the soil and the earthworms and everything will eat it over the season. You can throw the seaweed directly into your compost piles. Second you have rabbit pellets. Mostly alfalfa. Now alfalfa pellets are a little bit expensive but they are a fantastic fertilizer for a couple of reasons. One, they are loaded with nitrogen. Alfalfa is a nitrogen fixing crop. Alfalfa is a nitrogen fixing crop and that means that alfalfa has a relationship with certain type of bacteria in the soil and those soil bacteria live on the roots. Alfalfa also has some sort of a magical compound in it which causes plants to grow. And I don't remember if it's a hormone or whatever, but they've done tests where they take some alfalfa and mix it into an area and there's something in there that boosts plant growth. Some of you scientists out there might know what that is but all I know is it's really good for making plants take off. Number 3, dog food. It’s actually a really good fertilizer. But why is it such a good fertilizer? Well dogs are mostly carnivores. Protein is predominantly nitrogen. And nitrogen is the main thing plants like to eat. Number 4, Gar, which is a type of fish. And fish is a fantastic fertilizer. Let me show you how to use this thing. Right here, I'm going to put in a hill of pumpkins. I've been planting pumpkins and I love growing pumpkins. And one thing pumpkins love to eat is fish. Y'all have probably heard the story of how the Indians taught the Pilgrims how to bury fish underneath their corn to get a good yield. It really, really works. It actually doesn't just work with fish, it works with any kind of meat. One of my readers just sent me some pictures where she buried a rotten chicken carcass underneath one of her pumpkin vines and she had another pumpkin vine next to it which she didn't bury it under and you can see a huge difference between the two. All I'm going to do is dig a hole deep enough that I think the animals are probably not going to smell this fish and then I'm going to throw the fish in the hole. I hope this has helped you see that fertilizing plants doesn't have to be just a matter of going out and buying a bag of 10/10/10. Drying. Drying is what you do when you basically have nothing, or if you want to preserve the value, the nutrition in that crop to a higher than if you can. If you can, a lot of things are destroyed in the canning process because of the heat and boiling. But with drying you actually preserve more of the vitamin and mineral content. It doesn't get lost in the water you're canning in or the sauce that you're cooking or whatever else. So drying is actually a really good option. Now in order to dry, if you want to go for the easy way to dry, that would be buying a dehydrator. I've owned a few different dehydrators over the years. I've had some of the inexpensive, I think they're called Nesco dehydrators and they worked great. They're the circular type with the little plastic sheets, one fits over the other. You cut you're produce up into little manageable chunks, maybe three eighths of an inch thick or so and you lay them out on the little trays and you start it up and you set your heat level from quite warm, like 140 degrees or down to 95 degrees and you just let the breeze blow through there and warm them and overnight they pretty much are dry and you just scrape them off at that point and you put your dry pieces into jars and seal them or you put them in bags and seal them. You can also take stainless steel pans and set them in the sun. The rain is really your big enemy when it comes to drying. I remember trying to dry a whole bunch of blueberries in this little solar dehydrator thing I had tried to build, and I kept having to bring it inside because it didn't have enough of a cover on it and if it got rained on, it was made out of cardboard, it would have been ruined and my blueberries would have spoiled. So there's a lot of problems if you don't have it dry fast enough. The big thing with drying is getting things dry fast enough. The reason drying is such an excellent form of food preservation is that when something is dried, bacterial and fungal action pretty much comes to a halt because it needs water to survive. Here are some tobacco leaves that I am drying on the dashboard of my car right now. And they've only been up there for one day and they are totally, totally crispy dry. Your car heats up and the rain doesn't come into it, hopefully. And you crack the windows and it heats up and the moisture is coming out of those windows. And it's just like a big dehydrator. So your car is an awesome dehydrator. If you have a car, use it as a dehydrator, spread stuff out inside of it and just let the sun do the rest of it. Drying is one of those methods that is so simple that anybody can do it so long as you have a very dry sunny spot. A windy sunny spot, if you have a dry season, use your dry season for drying. When it's the rainy season where I live, you can't dry a thing to save your life. I would have to stick it on racks in the stove or use a dehydrator to dry it, and then bag it up or jar it up so it doesn't spoil. But in the dry season, as fall comes on hopefully and you're bringing your harvest in and it's starting to get dryer, if you've got that kind of a climate, take full advantage of it. And if you don't you're probably just going to have to get yourself a dehydrator. Drying is one of the best ways to preserve your food and it takes very little work. Just string some stuff up where they can dry and let them go. Make sure they don't stay wet too long. Anyway, thanks for joining me. Number one, the shovel. All right, a shovel is a no-brainer. Everybody knows about shovels. You can dig holes to plant fruit trees with it, you can dig a garden bed with it, you can shovel manure, and you can kill zombies. Shovel is the first one I would get. Number two, a spading fork. Now this isn't a manure fork, or a pitchfork, this is one that has hard tines on it. Usually it's four hard tines, and you dig it into the ground and you work the ground. If you're gonna double dig garden beds, or turn over the ground and you're not using a tiller, a spading fork is what you would use. Number three, the hoe. Now, I'm just talking about your regular boring old garden hoe, the thing that is rusting in the corner of your dad's shed. That is a fantastic weeding tool, the problem is, most of us don't really know what to do with it. My next tool is the scuffle hoe, also known as the hula hoe. This is a oscillating hoe, it has a blade that rocks back and forth in the ground. If you have looser soil, this thing is a weeding machine. It cuts both ways. It will change your hoeing forever. It's a really good tool and the modern ones are just fine. Number five is yet another hoe. That's a digging hoe, also known as a grub hoe. I have different varieties of this, I have a triangular shaped one, I have a long one, and then I have one that's called a grape hoe, but I use all of them like digging holes. This is what you'll see me digging pumpkin holes, where they're digging yam beds, or digging root beds. Because you're swinging the sucker, and you're digging with it, and it's easier than taking a shovel and jamming that shovel into the ground, and twisting it. I find a lot easier to use this heavier hoe head. Number six, if you have a large garden, here's yet another hoe. It's called a wheel hoe. It is about five times as fast for weeding. It weeds almost as fast as you can walk. Fantastic tool for any kind of survival gardening situation. Tool number eight. The wheelbarrow. A wheelbarrow allows you to move amendments around. You can load it up with soil, your potting soil, manure. Whatever you're gonna spread around the garden that wheelbarrow helps you get stuff around, and it allows you to move a lot more than you can by just holding sacks or buckets, or whatever else. Wheelbarrow is a really good tool. It's the reason that I tend to make my garden paths at least two to three foot wide, and that's so I can move through easily. Number nine, is one that I discovered a few years ago, and I would just simply not go without now, and that is a broadfork. I use the Meadow Creature broadfork because it's the unbreakable one. There are other broadforks in the world, and most of them have wooden handles or the tines are a little weaker. The Meadow Creature, I can't break it. I have pried out boulders with it, I have snapped tree roots with it. You slam that sucker into the ground, you rock it back and forth, and you break the ground. Once you have one, you will never go back. It is the most fantastic tool, and every time I demonstrate and people try, I feel like, how come I don't have it. I'm not a big fan of new tools, and I'm not a fan of gimmicky tools. I've gotten sucked in by tools that looked like they were something awesome before. So there are your nine top human power tools that will get you through the apocalypse. Or at least through gardening without filling the air with carbon dioxide and smoke. A shemagh, or a versacloth, is just a square piece of cloth. In this case, these shemaghs came from Afghanistan. Now, a shemagh is just a piece of square cloth, right? That's all that is, is a big chunk of square cloth. I like to fold it like a triangle. It gives me much more control, a little bit easier to use. I'll just put my two tips together, let gravity fold it for me. Now, when I got caught in desert sandstorms, one thing that was really hard to deal with was breathing. It kind of kicks your trash in breathing. Now, what you can do with this is just throw your sunglasses on, or throw some sort of goggles or something. That will keep your head out of the sun, keep your face out of the sun. Now, the reason you want all this cloth on you when it's extremely hot is your sweat will absorb into the cloth and that will help to keep you cool, as opposed to your sweat just going out into an incredibly dry environment. So, that's one of the reasons that this shemagh is so valuable. Now, let's pull this off. Don't neglect the fact that this is also a good way to keep warm. So, if you've got some of these shemaghs, you can put the one on your head and the one on your face to keep you warm when it's cold, or to protect you from extreme heat when it's really, really hot. There's many other things that you can do with a shemagh. One of them is using it as a waist versacloth. When I go trail running, I will usually bring a clean canteen, or a Nalgene, or something around my waist in some sort of versacloth or shemagh along with a small hand drill kit, a knife, something simple. This gives me the ability to go fishing, make fire, collect wild edibles, whatever it is that I want to do while I'm traveling fast and light. So, let me show you my version of how to do that. I've got my little heavy cover canteen here. Say it was full of water. I want to think about how this is going to ride on the back of my body. I don't want that chunky stuff on the back; I want this arched part. I can use this shemagh later for a warming insulating layer. I can pull it apart and put nesting material and things that I gather. I can throw a rabbit in it. Whatever it is that I need to do can be added to this shemagh. And this is super, incredibly stable, okay? All right. So, we've covered how to cover the face, how to wear it around the waist like a fanny pack, if you will. Let's cover the baby carrier. I call it the baby carrier because this is how I carry my son when we forget to bring some sort of a baby carrier. If you've just got packages that you want to carry, you can throw it on that one shoulder. This is comfortable. I can have a shoulder pack with a rabbit that I got, and I can have a waist pack with my water. So, you can do multiple things with this. The last thing that I'm going to show is the fact that you can have a front and a backpack. If we imagine a package here, okay? I would tie it in the front and then rotate it, right? The last thing I'm going to mention is if you need a way to move loose material, say you're building a shelter, and you open this up, you can load all sorts of debris and stuff in it. The third purpose, much like using the container to drink out of, I like to cut these, make a container, fill it full of water, and then boil my water in that container. That is what we're going to be teaching you today. We're going to make a container from these and then boil water on the fire. When it comes to making a container out of these, you want to find kind of a younger, nice, healthy pad. You don't want something that has these diseased-looking areas on it, the decaying areas. You want a good, solid outer part that's going to be nice and healthy. I like to use a younger one because a lot of times they will be healthier. Check out both sides. Make sure there's no rotting areas. This one looks okay. I'm going to start cleaning off some of these spines and give me an area to grab to, just somewhere I can hold this thing without getting those little splinters all in me. What I'm going to do is cut this thing a little bit past halfway. You don't want to cut it all the way at the top or the bottom, wherever it's connected, because then you're going to have where it comes up like this. It's going to be hard to get your knife down in there to carve out a nice container. I'll go a little past halfway, so we can still hold quite a bit of water. Next, I'm going to clean off all the big spines. I'm then going to have to cut down into it to form my container. What I'll do is I'll just take my knife and starting slicing directly down the middle of this pad. Once I have a container finished, I like to get a small stick, and I'll just cut that down and pry it in there to hold that open. There's my container. You can see I've got a pretty good bed of coals going on now. You'll notice I took two decent-sized logs and placed them against a larger log. That's just kind of a support system for my cactus pad. Now what I'm going to do is take those coals and transfer them all around that cactus pad to get that water to boil. You just want some sort of support system that's not going to disintegrate as it burns. By placing just the coals around there, we should be good long enough for that water to boil. I'll just place them all around this cactus pad. Takes a little longer with these medium to large-sized pads, but you get more water with it. It's a trade-off. We'll check back in here in a minute and see how it's looking. Our water's been sitting for a while. It's nice and cooled off. It's time to see how it tastes. Now, you want to be careful drinking from this thing. It's got a few cracks and burnt spots up at the top, so you want to make sure you don't spill all your water. That actually held an impressive amount of water. That was a pretty good little chug there. Down here in Texas and the Southwest, this is a very good, very easy way to boil water. It's much quicker, much easier than hot rocks. These cactuses are readily available. It just makes sense. You basically have a container ready to go. All you need is a knife. If you're down here in Texas and the Southwest where you have prickly pear cactuses, I suggest you try this method out, test it, see how you can tweak it and make it better, make it easier on yourself. Now you can use chert, flint, quartzite, quartz, volcanic glass such as obsidian or dacite, but really, what we want to know is the characteristics of that rock. Okay? We want to find a type of rock that is very glass-like. So one thing you can do is kind of knock these rocks together, you can hear that high pitched kind of glassy sound, and that's what we want. We want something that's real glass-like, that when we hit it, it's going to knock a flake off instead of shattering or crumbling, such as sandstone or something. So just go around, knock the rocks together. If they get a good high pitch sound, you're probably good, but your best bet is just to knock a flake off there and make sure that you can flake it. Now, once you've found your material, we're going to have to be able to knock flakes off of this thing. And the way we do that is we're going to find edges, what we call platforms, and all a platform is, is where are you going to hit the rock to knock a flake off. Now, you want your platform to be an angle that is less than 90 degrees. Okay? You can see we have a 90 degree edge there. We want something more like this, that is less than 90 degrees. So we're just going to kind of roll this rock around in our hands and find a nice angle to knock a flake off it. So you can see here that that's nice square edge there, that's a 90 degree angle. If we were to hit that with a rock, it's not going to drive a good flake off. So once we've found our angle, we need some type of nice pretty hard rock. You can use a river rock. We just want something that is going to knock this flake off. So here we found our edge. Okay, you can do a couple practice swing, and what you really want is the weight of this, of your tool, to do the work. So I'm not going to try to hammer that thing. I'm going to let my tool do the work. Okay? So stuff like this is great for cleaning animals. It's great for harvesting and processing different plants. This is the sharpest edge you'll ever be able to get. So we're just going to continue going around, finding those platforms, and trying to knock this down into some sort of knife blade. But whenever you find a nice platform, you want to make sure that that is lower than your center line. So if this is our center line, if this is our edge, we don't want to try to knock a flake off from here. We want to turn that over to where our platform iS closer to the side that we're flaking, and that's going to a cause that flake to travel this way and give you a nice, flat ... or flatter surface. So I'm going to continue going around this thing and make sure that my platforms are on the side, are closer to the side that I'm going to knock the flake from, and if they're not, I'm going to have to use my hammer stone and move that center line towards that edge. You see our center line's getting a little closer to being in line, which we're going to keep coming around knocking flakes off, and all we're going after is a nice edge on both sides that we can use to cut with. So here we have a nice little sumac tree that I want to utilize to make a pipe out of. So we're going to test out our little cutting tool here and go ahead and chop this thing down. There you go. It's not beautiful, it's not a piece of art, but it is a quick, functional tool you can make off the landscape, and it can help save your life. So go find some rock, whether it be river rock, flint, whatever, and just start knocking some flakes off and see what you come up with. To me being a prepper is just being prepared to do a long term application of survival skills over an extended period of time, indefinite period of time, with an uncertain future. That's how I define it and there's probably other definitions, but that's the way I see it. It's a long term application of survival skills. You have your immediate metabolic needs, which is your fire, shelter, water, and food. You also have your first aid, navigation and signal. Those are all preventatives. If I get injured and I can take care of that injury, I've prevented a survival situation because I can keep moving. If I don't ever get lost, and I can walk my way out to safety, I've prevented that survival situation. Signal, if for some reason I can't do either of these, and I can signal for rescue and get pulled out of there pretty quickly, that's another thing that prevents a catastrophe. Those are preventative priorities. Then supplemental priorities for me are tools, maintenance, and repair. Tools are things that allow me to provide for these immediate needs and these preventative needs. You need to be able to maintain your tools, and you need to be able to repair your gear that provide for all these. Those are supplemental priorities. That's just your survival needs, then when you look at it through the lens of a prepper standpoint, you're talking about something that could be longer term. Like we said, it's an uncertain environment for an indefinite amount of time. It's not a 72 hour thing, it could be the rest of your life. So, some things are adjusted a little bit. Like fire, fire is definitely an immediate need, especially if you're about to be hypothermic. However, you have permissive and non permissive situations going on. If you're in an area that's non permissive, that you're trying to lay low and be stealthy, because of whatever the event was that caused the situation you're in, then you need to really weigh the needs of having a fire versus the risks that it's going to be for you getting caught. That changes a little bit, you're going to rely ... if you can't have a fire, you're going to rely more on your shelter for body warmth and maintaining your body heat. Then signal. A lot of times signal is survival specific. When you get into a bug out scenario, signal becomes less a way of signaling rescuers and more of a way of signaling/communicating with other folks in your group. That's the change there, why there's an asterisk there. Of course, in a non permissive environment, in a post crap hits the fan kind of situation, security and community become different priorities that are not available when you're just doing basic survival. These are additional priorities that you need to think about. Security is an ongoing thing. You've got to be able to maintain, you have to be able to protect the gear you have. You have to be able to protect yourself. You have to be able to protect your group while you're providing for all these needs as well. So, security's an ongoing thing. Community is an ongoing thing. You may not be the best at every one of these, but somebody in your group may be great at navigation. Somebody in your group may be great at building shelters. You may have people in your community that are specifically there because of their skills at being able to repair things, being able to make things. You don't have the stores anymore. Amazon's out of business. Nobody can do it alone, so realizing the need to build community, to help provide for all these needs, becomes extremely important in this type of scenario. </video> <video> 4 Simple (& Cheap) Trellises for Your Garden Description: In this video you’ll learn 4 dead simple, and cheap trellises for your garden. If you have two, it can go this way or that way, but if you have three, it won't fall over. So you make a teepee, and then I put a stick across the center. Then my idea was, all I'm gonna do is start running some lines down to the ground, maybe put a support stick in the middle. Trellis #2: All I did to make this one, which is actually quite stable, all I did to make this one here is to hammer in three pieces of rebar, piece of rebar here, I hammered it far enough into the ground, and it's strong, and then I made a little picket down at the bottom here. You can see this, this is my little picket. This is another piece of rebar, which is actually about a two footer, which I hammered all the way into the ground. You get yourself one of those hammers with a big head on it, and a short handle, hammer it right into the ground, and then this is my support. This is paracord. Paracord ties at the bottom, and ties up here and gives this a lot of extra support, so it keeps the tension up, because once the vines grow along it they're gonna start pulling it down. Now these lines are not the most important lines, these are just strings. All these are gonna do is direct the vines up to the top. So when the vines find them, and they start going up to the top, they'll reach here, this isn't gonna go anywhere, because you really tied this sucker down. Paracord is good for 500 pounds of pressure. Rebar is awesome for using for trellises, because all you have to do is hammer it into the ground, and it lasts a long, long time, so I have a big pile of it right here. I get the bent and weird looking pieces that they have at the hardware store, and I get them on sale. Then I cut what I want out of them. Trellis #3: They'll grow up here, they'll support themselves, they'll have leaves all through the season and then I just gotta pull these. All I did was lay these pieces of scrap wood on the ground, as a support to hold the strings, so they don't go anywhere. That's another simple way you can build a trellis. It's not pretty, but it works. Trellis #4: Here's another teepee, but this is kind of an extended teepee. This one is a messy teepee, because I had these weird gnarly sticks, and I was trying to make it look shabby chic, or something like that. So it just kinda ended up looking shabby, but it works, it's very solid, and it's gonna be covered with green vines soon, because down here I have a perineal cucumber, known as Coccinia Grandis, which is already starting to climb. Don’t overthink it, I used an old bed frame once for a trellis, it may look trashy, but again the plants don't have eyes. Your neighbors do though, so make sure you don't do it in the front yard. You always want to have a primary and alternate a contingency and an emergency. The reason is when you're planning, what you're trying to do is answer a question that hasn't been asked yet, and if you only have one plan when you get out into the field or get into a situation that may not be the question that was asked. So an example pace plan. I think that it makes the most sense to already be where you're going to be if something happens, and stay there as long as you possibly can because you have the ability to stockpile supplies, you have the ability to come up and establish sustainable systems for livestock and for gardening vegetables and things like that, sustainable water procurement sources, so that's kind of a large scale kind of long term thing. So if you can already be where you're going to be, if anything happens, then that's great. If you're not where you're going to be, if you have a place that you plan to bug out to, a bug out location that has all those supplies and all those sustainable systems, then you still, I think need to be prepared to stay where you primarily reside for what could be, three days, it could be a week, could be a month, could be a year, it could be for the rest of the time that you have alive. So even if you don't plan on staying in your primary residence, really to bug out before you need to bug out is kind of a bad idea. There may just be a natural disaster that hits the coastline here, and I have to survive here in place because I can't get out for three days, five days, seven days or whatever. And then everything's restored back to normal, so for me to immediately decide that I'm going to go to the Adirondacks or the Smokies, run off to the mountains, doesn't make a lot of sense when I haven't figured out what the question is. But anyway, being prepared to bug in your primary residence for as long as you need, to get everything ready to go on to your bug out location that has better supplies or better location, a better place, more suited for long term survival, that should be everyone's primary plan. So my ultimate plan would be a little bit best case and a little bit more best case then my contingency, but I've got a vehicle that can get me to a predesignated bug out location that already has supplies and everything. So that's a lot better than being forced because for some reason my vehicle gets stolen, broke down, doesn't work, or the roads are closed, me having to go to that same place on foot, which would be my contingency. So contingency would be bug out that location on foot. So I may have to plan my routes from here. When I finally get to the point where I'm bugging out to, ultimate bug out location by vehicle, I may only make it part way. Well, if I get to the smoky mountains, I can ditch the vehicle and go to, being on foot and I can pick up the Appalachian trail, the Appalachian trail will take me all the way up into upstate New York. It makes more sense for me to jump in the car, which gets better gas mileage, requires less fuel, knowing that I still can't make it the entire way and I'm going to have to go on foot. So something to think about. Emergency, of course I don't have an alternate bug out location to go to, my vehicles are not an option so I'm bugging out on foot. Nothing but me and the family and our go bags. That needs to be something that's planned for. This is why you learn primitive skills and survival skills so that worst case, I don't have anywhere to go and I don't have a vehicle to get me there, If you enjoyed this video. I'm David The Good, and today we're going to talk about deep mulching, and I'm going to show you how to make a lasagna garden/sheet composted little four by four or so space that you could set up in like half an hour or less and grow yourself some good crops. This little area here is alongside a couple of longer beds. The ground is all full of roots because we just cleared it recently. It's a total mess. There's trash here and all kinds of things. And it's a pain in the neck to dig this soil. It's hard and it's not wonderful stuff. So, if I want to go to bed in here really quick, I'm going to do it the lazy, deep mulch, lasagna gardening, as Patricia Lanza calls it. Ruth Stout called it the no work garden, even though it's not totally no work. There's no such thing as a no work garden, not since the Garden of Eden at least, and even then they were supposed to tend it. But we're going to take this area and we are going to clear it up, and we're going to have a less work garden. So basically we're going to go fast and we're going to do what's called sheet mulching. We're going to mulch in sheets with various things that we have lying around, and we're going to make a little space that we can put some transplants into. Step 1. Clear out all of the debris and branches that have “infested” the area. Step 2. You want to make sure your ground is wet before putting your weed block layer down. Otherwise it will stay dry throughout the season, and you don’t really want that. Step 3. You’re going to place cardboard down as your weed blocker. Don’t worry about the appearance at this point, as it will all be covered up. Step 4. Create a border to frame in your gardening bed. You can use blocks, old logs, cinder blocks, bricks etc. Step 5. Get some compost out of your compost pile. You're just going to stack this up to make a good layer over what's underneath. Mostly composted seaweed. You want to soak that in water first and squeeze it out to make sure that it's not got too much salt in it for your ground, if you live anywhere near seaweed. You can also do this by stacking up straw. You could take grass clippings and stack it up. There's a lot of things you can do. Step 6. If you have a hose, just keep soaking it and soaking and soaking it until everything is nice and wet, and it's going to Stay in here, and it's going to look great and pretty and all that stuff. And now your last step, which I can't demonstrate for you very easily, is you're going to plant some transplants in here. If I had some transplants I would show you, but I don't at this point because where we live, this is the dry season, and we have to haul all our water over here and we're not going to put transplants in until the rain comes again. So, I would hate to put some transplants in here just to have them kick off on me, or keep carrying buckets of water and I'll forget one week and they'll be done. When the rain starts, put the transplants in. Some things to consider: Think of all the cardboard you have to put down. Think of all the compost or straw or wood chips or whatever else you have to do. It's great if you can get it, but you're talking like truckloads of material. So in that case. we're going to use different varieties of gardening, but for quick backyard food production, save your fall leaves, get some straw, coffee grounds, save your kitchen scraps, make compost, whatever else. So you have your EDC here. That's what you'd carry daily, and it's basically got things that you need to survive every day. Those are your normal, everyday needs. It's designed to get you back to your vehicle. Which would be your Get Home Bag, your GHB. Packed with emergency supplies. What we've got so far is we've got our Everyday Carry, which is in our pockets. Then, you have your BOB, your Bug Out Bag, also known as a Get Out of Dodge kit, a GOOD kit, which I don't hear this one as much as I do BOB. BOB is synonymous to me with a Go bag. The whole reason we plan and prepare is because the government is not going to take care of us, in my opinion. What happens if it goes longer than 72 hours? You've extended your life for 72 hours in a catastrophe, and then you slowly starve to death or die of dehydration or exposure, something to that effect. Then you have an INCH bag, which is a I'm Never Coming Home bag. This has everything you need to walk away from society forever. It's a heavy pack. It has a lot more tools. It has longer term gear and supplies. To me, that's a lot of bags, and how do you know which one to take and what if you got it wrong when you went to the office that day and take the wrong bag. Why do you have four different bags, and why does the prepper community talk about having four different bags? I think it has a lot to do with marketing and selling people on a idea, selling people on products, things like that. Why couldn't you just have one bag, one backpack that has all of your needs in there for 72 hours with the ability to extend out to forever if you had to, all in one bag so that it's less confusing? Regardless of what the situation is, your priorities do not change. Your survival priorities, those do not change no matter what happens. You still have your immediate metabolic needs. You have to maintain your body heat. That's your shelter and your fire. You need water. You need calories. That's your food. That doesn't change regardless of the situation. That goes on every single day regardless of emergency or not. What I like to do is kind of a layered survival system. You've got your pocket EDC. This is what's actually being carried, and this is more a rural kind of thing because your situation may not allow you to carry a bare minimum belt. You may have to combine the bare minimum belt with your pocket EDC, but, anyway, this is the stuff that you have with you all the time. Then, you'd have a backpack kit. Then, you'd have a vehicle kit and a home kit. Establishing a network of caches is a great idea and something that the military has used during unconventional warfare type scenarios for a long time. So, if something happens and I'm at home, I have my home kit. This is why it's a layered system and why I do it this way. While I'm home, if I need fire, water, shelter food, if I need to provide for my priorities, I'm using the stuff that's in the home. I don't have to carry this. This can be big, bulky things. This can be your stoves with large fuel cylinders. This can be your wood stove with 10 cords of firewood stacked outside. It's a home kit that provides for your needs. This is a BUG end type scenario. For some reason, I have to blow out of here, and I've got access to my vehicle, and I can use it, I can use everything in my vehicle kit, which is a larger kit. It's smaller than a home kit, obviously, but it's larger than my backpack kit. I'm gonna keep using the stuff in this vehicle for as long as I have access to that vehicle if that makes sense. There's a couple of things you need to know about them, though. First of all, don't put them on when they're still hot. They'll burn your plants. Second of all, they're very alkaline. If you wanted to make your own soap. If you have acid soil, putting some wood ashes on is great, but if you have something like limestone soil where it's very alkaline, putting wood ashes on is a bad idea. Some plants don't like their pH to go that high. Number 2: Manure Now, you're often going to be offered some manure. Somebody will say, "Oh, yeah. We have horses," or "There's this place that keeps cows," or "So and so has a goat farm," or whatever else. They've got piles of it. You can come and help yourself. In the United States, I would not use manure, unless I knew it was a completely organic operation. Now, that might sound like I'm some sort of extremist or something, but seriously, there are now toxins that have been sprayed for mostly about the last decade, Grazon and others. They contain aminopyralids. Aminopyralids is a long-term persistent herbicide, which can be eaten by the animal, go through its digestive tract, be composted for a year or two, and still destroy your garden. It is designed to kill broadleaf weeds, and most of your garden plants are broadleaf plants, and it can't tell the difference between weeds and vegetables. Number 3: Compost It's actually so much a favorite of mine that I wrote a book on it, Compost Everything: The Good Guide to Extreme Composting, where I share how to pretty much turn everything in the world into soil, including your enemies. People have this idea that compost is like magic, like you have to get your carbon and nitrogen ratios correct. It's got to hit 100 and something degrees on the inside. You've got to turn it every couple of days. You have to have a complicated tumbler or a three-bin system, and by the time people end up looking at all list of rules for composting, they start just throwing their banana peels back in the trash. It's too much trouble. But, compost doesn't have to be that much trouble. Really, all you have to do is find a corner of your yard and throw stuff there, stuff that'll rot, fall leaves, kitchen scraps, eggshells, lasagna. It doesn't matter. . Number 3.5: Compost tea I've got a trash can right here, which is filled with compostable materials, mostly nitrogen fixing tree leaves and weeds. And then I took some kitchen scraps and threw it in there. This is pretty much a swamp. If you want to make compost tea for the nice, sweet smelling compost tea and everything, what you have to do is get a container like this, put a little bit of compost into something like some pantyhose. I don't bother with all that. That's the way you can add compost organisms to the soil and a little bit of beneficial ecosystem and all that jazz. I just throw everything in some water and let it rot. I put some ashes in. I put Epsom salts in sometimes, just looking for a wide range of stuff, and as it deteriorates, it's going to break down, put the minerals in the water. I wouldn't water a Sally garden with this, but when I've got my corn growing, my pumpkins growing, beans, when I do transplants, I'll take a little bit of this, thin it out with some water, and pour it on there. So, it's my anaerobic compost tea. There are nice ways to make compost tea. This is not it. This is the lazy way, and it works for me. And remember, Gardening can be fun. They are two very different things. This is flint and steel, or in my case, chert and steel. This is a ferro rod. Now, what's happening with the ferro rod is this. It has ferrous, which is iron, that you are scraping off by using one metal to scrape off another metal. That iron is hitting the oxygen in the air, and bursting into sparks, okay? That is a ferro rod, that is not flint and steel. There's no flint in this process. It's steel and steel. Let's talk about actual flint and steel. Actual flint and steel is this. It is hardened iron. Iron with some sort of ferrous in it. I'm sorry, ferrous is iron. The reason why you have to have that, is because you have to have a metal that is combustible when it hits oxygen. If you don't that, it won't work. What's happening is this, it has to be hardened. If it's not hardened, it won't work. This will hold an ember for you, if you throw a spark at it. I'll do another video that shows you just how to make char cloth, okay? For now, I made in my little Tabasco Chocolate tin can, a bunch of char cloth. All right, there's all my little pile of char cloth. Now, there's two ways you can do this. One of the best ways I think when people are starting, is to practice before you pull your char cloth out. What I'll have them do is I'll have them throw a spark, and keep throwing at it until, and change the angle until you get your spark. You're attempting, you're not getting anything, and you change the angle, and eventually you're going to get your spark. The other thing to remember is, the hand is loose. You're kind of whipping this, you're not hitting it, you're not smacking it. You're glancing it off. If you glance it off, and I'm also not going straight at it. I'm hitting it at an angle. I'm trying to shave that outer edge off. When I start to shave that outer edge, you notice that's where my sparks are. Let's say I wasn't getting sparks, I start changing my pitch, and eventually I start getting it, and I hold it there. This lets me know that if I want sparks from this tone, and this chunk of steel, I need to do it at that angle. Make sure you practice before you throw the char cloth on there. There are two or three ways to do this as well. One of them is to hold the char cloth on the bottom, throw sparks, and hope that you get it on the bottom. Whenever I do that, my sparks go to the top. The other way is to hold it on the top, and whenever I do this the sparks go to the bottom. The way that I've found that works the best for me, is to hold it with thumb and forefinger in the middle like that, so that you can get a spark from whatever direction, and it will work wherever it goes. Let's get a spark real quick. Okay, there's my spark. A little cheater technique is to throw a little extra char cloth down in your nesting material, so that it will hold once you get it there. 'Cause sometimes it can burn out really quick. One last technique that I'm going to give you, is if you're having a hard time with your cloth falling apart, just put one on the bottom, and one on the top, as if you had one big piece that's splitting. A tip from a friend of mine... "Treat it like a baby squirrel. Tight enough that it's not going to get loose, loose enough that you're not going to suffocate it." I will tuck it around just a little bit, you can still see there's smoking coming from out of there. I'm not in a super big hurry. Thanks for joining me. So simply ask them if you can have some of their free tires. When loading up your tires. You don’t need to use only soil. Throw in dead leaves and material in there. Just trying to take up space. I am a compost maniac, and I'm always looking for a way I can turn things into compost, and recycle it, and feed my plants. What you don't want though, is you don't want real thick, or heavy soil inside of the gardens. A good mix is a little bit of greens, and a little bit of browns. Meaning you have good nitrogen and carbon. You wanna make sure that you pack it in around the edges, because when you water it it's gonna wanna sink some, and it's good to make sure it's going into the sidewalls. And you see, so much had sunk down now. I've gotta put some more soil on top yet again. You don't wanna buy the cheapest potting soil necessarily, because it's often just wood chips and sand, You don't have to make it look perfect. The plants don't care. Then I’ll begin sticking my plants in. Hot peppers. talinum fruticosum Tomato Celosia Eggplant That’ll be a typical tire garden with those items in it. Now, if I'm gonna grow something that has deeper roots, I might take a tire, and then stick another tire on top of it like that. And then, you've got a ton of space going down on the inside. And the last thing I wanna say on tires, I did a tire gardening demonstration about a year ago on my YouTube channel, and then I set it to my newsletter. And somebody wrote me back and said, "This is terrible. You should have looked up how toxic and dangerous tires are," and all that kind of thing, and she kind of chewed me out for it, and I said, "Well, I'm sorry. I have heard that there's some danger with leaching. There could be this, or there could be that." So, I looked it up, and I wrote an article on it. It was like a 900 ... I think it was called Are Tire Gardens Toxic? And so, I wrote this article where I considered the pros and cons of tire gardening. There are a lot of pros to it in that you can just set up a garden right away, even if ... There are some toxic things that are used in the manufacturing of tires, and that are possibly contained in the tires, but they, from my reading, generally that is bound up, and the tires are inert. The materials that are in them ... Tires don't break down easily at all, so that stuff doesn't come out very easily into your gardens, but there is a possibility that some material is leaking out. I had some people and say that they had no problem with tires, that the entire world is toxic. There's always a little bit of chemicals in everything. And honestly, there's chemtrails up above, and there's things getting sprayed in your neighbour's yard, and that it's probably more toxic to eat a hotdog. Well, it's almost certainly true. And then, other people we're saying, "Yeah, I just don't wanna put any more toxicity into my garden." It's not something I really want to make a staple of my gardening, but in the situation where I am right now, where we're borrowing a lot, and we've got this slab of concrete to garden on top of, I could put some vegetables in right away, and I'm gonna grow them organically other than the fact that they're inside of a tire. Growing in compost, they're growing with good additives. I'm not gonna be spraying them with anything, so I'm not really all that worried about it. When I get my own property later on There you go. That's how to do tire garden, and that's why you might want to, and why you might not want to, but that is a really easy garden right there. It's kind of hard to turn down.
