It was first broadcast on 4 June 1998, less than a year after Diana's death. Reporter Martyn Gregory uncovered so much evidence that discredited Mohammed Fayed's claims that he could not put all of it into this documentary. Former Harrods Head of Security, Bob Loftus, gives evidence of the lengths Mohammed Fayed went to court Princess Diana as part of his efforts to ingratiate himself with the British establishment and expand his sphere of influence. The video was compiled for the inquests into the deaths of Diana and her partner Dodi Fayed in 2007. The Paris police had seized them as part of their investigation into the crash in 1997. The first 25 minutes of the video show the couple's first visit to the hotel between 4.35pm and 7pm on 30 August 1997 including the collection of a ring that was later said to be an engagement ring. There is a separate compilation of CCTV on the subject of that ring which along with other evidence established that, in all probability, Dodi intended it as simply a gift to the Princess. From 25 minutes to end covers from the couple's unexpected return to the hotel at 9.52pm to the time the Mercedes departed with Henri Paul driving at twenty past midnight. In 1997, there was also no CCTV coverage of the restaurant where Diana and Dodi first went after their return but left after 10 minutes or of the Bar Vendome where Henri Paul consumed two glasses of Ricard less than two hours before he took the wheel. The evidence Henri Paul did consume this alcohol, which in itself would have rendered him unfit to drive, was established by the testimony of the bar staff who served him and the bill generated for the table he sat at. The re-emergence of this video on the internet is, I believe, in the public interest as despite the clear and unambiguous verdict of the jury in 2008, there have been a number of books and a least one film produced since then still claiming there was a conspiracy to murder the Princess. If you approach this CCTV and its narrative with an open mind, you will be able to draw your own conclusions as to what really happened that night in Paris when the world lost an iconic figure who is still missed. As bodyguard Kieran Wingfield said during his inquest testimony: "You cannot argue with the CCTV". </video> <video> Princess Diana Final Day - Selection of the Ring - CCTV raw footage Description: On the afternoon and early evening of 30 August 1997, hours before their deaths, Princess Diana and her partner Dodi Fayed spent time in the Imperial Suite of the Ritz Hotel in Paris. During that time, Dodi made a trip to a jewellers on the opposite side of the Place Vendome. He looked at several items of jewellery, including braclets, watches and rings. He chose not to take any of them with him. He later sent Assistant to the President of the Ritz Hotel, Claude Roulet, back to the jewellers to look at some more items. Ultimately, Roulet was given a diamond encrusted ring which was considerably cheaper than the other items viewed and was already being worn by the jeweller's wife. That ring was later chosen by Dodi and now forms part of the memorial to Diana and Dodi in Harrods. All the items viewed were taken from the display cabinets. 31:45 Dodi is seen in the Ritz Hotel ascending the main stairway with a brochure. 32:30 Roulet remains in the shop for a further 5 minutes 12 seconds until 17:56:12. He sits at the display table with the items pointed out by Dodi Al Fayed and seems to be writing. 37:05 Roulet, who has remained seated throughout, gets up and leaves. He is not seen to take anything with him other than a document.The items packed remain on the display table. 38:30 Roulet arrives back at the hotel. He goes upstairs and enters the Imperial Suite to talk to Dodi. He is in the Suite for 4 minutes, 26 seconds. He goes back downstairs holding a brochure. 45:30 Roulet returns to the Imperial Suite for 4 minutes, 40 seconds. It is inferred from Roulet's subsequent witness statements he was told by Dodi to return to the shop to negotiate discounts and collect the items for Diana's viewing. Second visit: Time in the shop for Claude Roulet: 8 minutes 24 seconds - from 18:32:16 to 18:40:40. 49:55 Claude Roulet enters and goes downstairs. The Jeweller and his wife are present and both are actively involved in what takes place. 50:42 After a discussion with Roulet, the Jeweller gets his jewellery case from the office and takes items from it that he shows to Roulet. 54:30 The jeweller goes back into the office and returns with his wife who shows Roulet her right hand. It seems something is taken from her hand... 55:30 Claude Roulet then picks up and closely inspects the item and the jeweller goes into the office briefly and returns with an advertising sheet, which in the presence of the Jeweller's wife, he shows to Claude Roulet, the advertising sheet they are looking at has been identified as the ‘Dis-moi Oui’ (Tell me Yes) advertisement. 56:10 The Jeweller's wife packs into a bag the items that Claude Roulet has just been viewing and leaves the packed bag on the table next to Roulet. 58:35 Claude Roulet and the Jeweller shake hands and he picks up the packed bag and leaves the shop. 1:03:30 Roulet returns to the Imperial Suite for about 3 minutes. He later stated Dodi only chose the 'Tell Me Yes' ring to show to Diana. Roulet then goes to the hotel strong room to deposit the other items. After the tragedy, on 3 September the Jeweller retrieved the other items from the Ritz and Mohammed Al Fayed purchased the 'Tell Me Yes' ring to later incorporate it into the Harrods memorial. </video> <video> Princess Diana - Operation Paget Press Conference 2006 Description: After a near three year and very expensive investigation, former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord John Stevens of Kirkwhelpington presented the report of the Operation Paget investigation into the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed at a press conference on 14 December 2006. Lord Stevens began the press conference with reading out an overview of the report which touched upon notable sujects like Diana's alleged engagement and pregnancy, Henri Paul's autopsy results and work done by the Transport Research Laboratory in reconstructing the crash. Following his statement, Lord Stevens takes questions from the world's press including from the BBC, ITN, Sky, the Daily Express and media from the US, Canada, France and Dubai. The footage was taken by Greek television channel Sky at Kyparissi beach in Peloponnese and used in the channel's news reports about Diana's holiday with Rosa. Their boat, the Della Grazia, can be seen. </video> <video> Princess Diana - The Accident - 4/6/98 - Part 2 of 5 Description: </video> <video> Princess Diana - Driver's View of Final Journey in Paris - February 1998 Description: Run throughs of the route the car carrying Diana, Princess of Wales took on its fatal journey on 31 August 1997 in central Paris. This footage was taken by London's Metropolitan Police on Saturday 21 February 1998, just under six months after the tragedy that caused the deaths of Diana, Dodi Fayed and their impromptu driver Henri Paul as well as serious injuries to bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones. The car equipped with the camera reaches the rear entrance of the Ritz Hotel in the Rue Cambon at 00:53. The route continues after a right turn into the Rue de Rivoli at 01:55 before joining the Place de la Concorde. The red traffic light at Avenue des Champs-Élysées that Henri Paul was stopped at, and Trevor Rees-Jones remembers them taking off at speed from, is seen at 3:28. After the lights, the car turned right onto Cours La Reine which is the beginning of the embankment expressway way that runs parallel to the River Seine. The route then passes through the underpass for the Pont Alexandre III. At 5:12, the slip road onto Avenue George V that it is thought Henri Paul would have intended to take to get to Dodi's apartment in Rue Arsene- Houssaye is seen. It is likely that Mercedes was simply travelling too fast at this point to have made the turn. Eyewitnesses estimated it as travelling between 90 and 140 kilometres per hour (60-90mph) on its approach to the Place D'Alma underpass. The police car passes the 13th pillar of the Alma underpass where the Mercedes crashed at 5:31. It is likely the purpose of the recording of the route was for evidence to be presented at Diana's and Dodi's inquests. Due to various legal challenges brought by Dodi's father Mohammed Al Fayed, the inquests were substantially delayed and this footage was not presented in an English court until 3 October 2007, almost 10 years after it had been captured. http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20090607230252/http://www.scottbaker-inquests.gov.uk/hearing_transcripts/031007pm.htm The British police team ran through the route of Diana's fatal journey a total of six times on that day in 1998: at 5:57, 10:17 (the staff entrance of the Ritz Hotel where Diana walked from before getting into the car can be seen at 12:24), 21:45, 27:16 and 33.30 The last three runs were done around midnight so they were indicative of the traffic conditions at the time of the actual fatal journey which started 17 minutes past midnight on 31 August 1997. The car driven by Henri Paul was a 1994 Mercedes S280, registration number 688 LTV 75. On the last of the runs (at 37:00) the police driver accelerates up to 60 mph, presumably to give a better idea of the speed Henri Paul was going at as he approached the Alma Underpass. The speed of the Mercedes was estimated at 60 to 65 mph when it crashed into the pillar and it was found to have been braking for some distance before so it probable that from the Alexandre III tunnel onwards, Henri Paul was driving well in excess of 70mph on a road where the speed limit is 31mph (50kph). This is supported by eyewitness estimates of the Mercedes' speed. It is worth noting that a number of the Parisian drivers captured by the police camera in 1998 are choosing to ignore the speed limit however, it is evident from the video that at the time there were not many signs advising of the speed limit along the route. There are now, in 2014, 50kph speed limit signs at the entrance to the Alma Underpass and at other places along the route. The excessive speed that Henri Paul drove the Mercedes was the direct cause of his loss of control once he entered the Alma Underpass. Along with the non-use of seatbelts, the speed was also a significant cause of the extent of the horrific injuries to all four occupants of the vehicle. Inquest Documentary following Unlawful Killing verdict 2008 Description: Martyn Gregory, author of the acclaimed book about the death of Diana: 'Diana: the Last Days' covered the Inquest every week during its six month duration for Sky News. Once the jury had returned an Unlawful Killing verdict due to the negligence of Henri Paul and the Papparazzi, the conspiracy theories had been finally debunked. He presented this documentary reviewing the evidence that led to the Inquest verdict. The interviews include Kez Wingfield, the second bodyguard who was assigned to look after Dodi and Diana on the fatal night, reveals it was Mr Al Fayed who approved the plan for their exit from the Ritz. Diana's former London police bodyguard Ken Wharfe offers his opinion on the plan. Claude Roulet, the former Deputy Director of the Ritz, who was in charge of the Hotel that day as the Director was on vacation, states he saw Henri Paul in a bar that evening before he returned to the Hotel. He also gives an account of his last conversation with Henri Paul. Dr Robert Forrest, a professor of forensic toxicology, gives his analysis of how much Henri Paul had had to drink before he took the wheel. The driver who brought the Mercedes up from the car park to the back of the Ritz reveals he was ordered to give the keys to Henri Paul despite him not having the qualifications to drive Diana and Dodi. Claude Roulet says the professional chauffeurs who could have driven Diana and Dodi noticed Henri Paul was not his normal self. The Police Officer who led the French investigation between 1997 and 1999, Commander Jean-Claude Mules, states it was obvious it was a straightforward car crash and what came afterwards were nothing more than allegations with no evidence to support them. He then speaks of his contact with James Andanson. Martyn Gregory then goes on to touch upon the allegations surrounding 'Flash before the Crash' and the time it took to get Diana to the hospital. Diana's close friend Rosa Monckton who went on holiday with Diana two weeks before she died, gives some insight into Diana's feelings for Dodi. There is then an astonishing revelation about what was said about the supposed engagement ring that is now on display in Harrods, backed up by Claude Roulet who collected the ring from the Repossi jewellers. Martyn Gregory explains how CCTV destroyed the fabrication that Diana and Dodi planned to live together. Diana's friend Rosa Monckton then gives her own delicate evidence proving she couldn't have been pregnant. Pregnancy turns out to be the allegation that is fatal to the conspiracy theorists' case. Martyn Gregory then springs a Roger Cook style surprise interview on Mohammed Fayed as he leaves the Royal Courts of Justice in London on the day the Jury formally repelled his claims of murder. Fayed remains uncharacteristically silent, however. What I notice about this documentary is that it interviews people who were present at the time of the events under analysis and most of them met or knew Diana very close to her death. The pro-conspiracy theory documentaries almost always only feature people who were far away and had no direct connection at all to events and are mere armchair commentators. With the inquest now over, I hope we can move on from Diana's death and can now fondly remember and celebrate her life. It is a shame that her death was tarnished by false and often absurd allegations that all had a self-serving purpose for Mohammed Fayed. </video> <video> Princess Diana Final Day - Roulet and the Brochure - CCTV Raw Footage Description: This was an additional video compiled for Dodi and Diana's Inquests in 2007/8 in London by the Metropolitan Police. It was to clarify an area surrounding the provenance of a jewellery brochure which was connected to a ring that was collected on Dodi's behalf by Ritz Hotel Assistant President Claude Roulet on 30 August 1997, hours before Diana and Dodi's deaths in the fatal car accident. The ring Roulet collected that day is now part of the memorial to Diana and Dodi in Harrods. His interviewers are Denise Van Outen and Richard Bacon. At the time of the interview, the French investigation had concluded that the direct cause of the crash that killed Diana was because of Henri Paul, the deputy head of security at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, lost control of the car when travelling at more than twice the speed limit towards the Alma Underpass and he was undoubtedly drunk at the time. As Gregory states in the interview, there was a delay of over four years after the conclusion of the French Investigation before the British Inquest opened in October 2003. This delay was due to legal challenges brought in France by Mohammed Al Fayed to the original investigation because of his refusal to accept that his employee and organisation was responsible for the tragedy. When the Inquest finally opened in 2003, Mohammed Al Fayed wrote to the Coroner repeating the conspiracy allegations he had pursued almost since the moment he was informed of the crash. In view of the claims of serious criminality contained in the conspiracy allegations, the Coroner had little option but to involve the police who decided to launch Operation Paget in January 2004. The Operation Paget investigation concluded in December 2006 and found that there was no evidence to support the claims of conspiracy and all the available evidence suggests it was a tragic accident caused by drink driving. By the time of this interview in 2005, he had also produced two documentaries in 1998 and 2004 on Diana's death. Denise Van Outen and Richard Bacon then go through some of the specific allegations. These are: 1. There was foul play in the death of Diana, Princess of Wales 2. Driver Henri Paul was not drunk 3. A White Fiat Uno knew Diana's car was coming and deliberately caused the crash. 4. Someone set off a blinding flash before Diana's car entered the tunnel and also deliberately cause the crash 5. The medical personnel called to attend to Diana after the crash deliberately caused her to die. 6. Diana was pregnant and this was the motive for the above. Martyn Gregory addresses each of these points and successfully refutes them, mentioning some of the outrageous assertions made around Diana's death including that by British tabloid the Daily Express that Diana's body would be exhumed as part of the British Police investigation. The video captures the scene at the front of the hotel about 30 minutes before the couple left on the journey that resulted in their deaths. The cars they arrived in are parked at the front of the hotel and you can see their usual driver Philippe Dourneau, at his Mercedes. The 'dummy run' where the usual drivers drove the vehicles the couple arrived in around the Place Vendome to see how the paparazzi react can also be seen. At the end of the video, the traffic congestion on the Champs-Élysées can be seen and it likely for this reason Henri Paul decided to go along the embankment road that lead to the Alma tunnel where the crash happened.
