Every child enters the world with potential and dreams—but not every child enters the same world. Some carry burdens that make it difficult to thrive. In the U.S., approximately 1.5 million children have a parent in prison. At no fault of their own, children of prisoners face significant risk factors and are more likely than their peers to follow a parent’s footsteps into incarceration. Even after a parent comes home from prison, a family’s chances are limited by the lasting stigma and collateral consequences of a criminal record. People impacted by incarceration need first and second chances to thrive and break free from the cycle. With nearly 50 years of experience walking alongside people and families impacted by incarceration, Prison Fellowship is uniquely positioned to convene the First and Second Chances Philanthropy Council. The Council is made up of corporations and foundations seeking to holistically support children with incarcerated parents and unlock second chances for people with a criminal record. Council members are given the opportunity to support and experience the work of the First Chance Network™, a group of nonprofits and other community-based partners collaborating with Prison Fellowship to increase the resiliency of children with incarcerated parents, so they not only avoid involvement in the criminal justice system but discover broader horizons for their futures. Through campaigns like Second Chance Month®, policy reforms, and second chance hiring efforts, Prison Fellowship also engages the Council in efforts to reduce stigma and unlock second chances for returning citizens to secure employment, stable housing, and more. “By collaborating with the Prison Fellowship, we can provide youth with incarcerated parents opportunities and resources to help them thrive,” says Dr. Marvin Carr, director of the Walmart.org Center for Racial Equity.
