The aircraft was state-of-the-art in the late 1960s and they operated regularly scheduled passenger flights throughout the millennium. As the jets continue to age, more and more disappear to the scrap yard as the jet becomes pricier to upkeep. I had been trying to experience Canadian North's last 737-200 aircraft for years now, and when I found out that May 6 was the final retirement flight, I knew I had to be there! Something unique about the 737-200 is its gravel-kit modifications allowing the jet to land in small rural communities with only gravel runways. The Combi configuration also allows the aircraft to carry half passengers and half cargo. The -200s are still in operation with Nolinor Åviation and Air Inuit, both based in Quebec. Canadian North's -200s were in slightly worse condition though, as the jet we flew on had four recorded inflight engine failure incidents within the last decade. 43-years-old is extremely old for an aircraft, especially one carrying passengers in harsh conditions. The airline has 24 A330-200s that shuttle thousands of travelers to and from Hawaii daily in an 18 First Class-260 Economy seat cabin configuration. Hawaiian Airlines is headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii with a 66-aircraft fleet serving 31 destinations. It is the largest operator of commercial flights to and from the island state of Hawaii with its main hub at Honolulu and a secondary hub in Kahului, Maui. Hawaiian is the 16th-largest commercial airline in the United States. Alaska Airlines is planning on merging with Hawaiian but has stated intentions to operate the two brands separately. The fun begins at a private terminal dedicated to First Class passengers, where attendants helped me through a quick security screening. Amenities inside the facility included a restaurant, cigar lounge, showers and bathtubs, hotel rooms, workstations, dozens of newspapers, and a Lufthansa concierge desk. A team of limo drivers takes each passenger from the First Class Terminal directly to their gate. Being onboard the double-decker 747 Queen of the Skies is a thrill. The First Class cabin is located on the first floor in the nose, where only 8 seats are available in a spacious layout. It's a 14-year-old seat product that doesn't compete well with the Gulf carrier's First Class pods. Starting this year, Lufthansa will replace these aging seats with a new "Allegris" product that features a much larger and fully enclosed suite. I believe Lufthansa excelled most during the lunch service. The walnut-crusted steak was tender and delicious, and the cheeses offered throughout tasted amazing. I also learned that Lufthansa is the world's largest consumer of caviar, buying about 10 tons annually, which is around 5% of the world's caviar supply. As the Flag carrier of Germany and Europe's second-largest airline, Lufthansa operates with a level of professionalism, and I noticed crew members taking pride in their positions. The airline is owned by the Greenlandic Government, and it operates a fleet of 28 aircraft: one A330neo used for transatlantic and charter flights, 9 propeller aircraft primarily serving the domestic network, and 19 helicopters that serve the remote settlements within Greenland and its rugged coastline. Although Air Greenland's headquarters are in Nuuk, its main hub is located at Kangerlussuaq Airport. This small port city currently has the longest runway and the most reliable weather for the airline's daily jet flight to Copenhagen. This will all change in a few years when Nuuk Airport expands its runway to 6,560ft and constructs a brand new terminal. Concerns about Nuuk's unpredictable and often foggy weather are high, but Greenland wants to put Nuuk on the world map however it can. Air China is the flag carrier of the People's Republic of China, flying over 100 million passengers annually. Beijing and Chengdu are its main hubs, with Shanghai acting as a secondary international hub. The A330-300 we flew is one of a few unique Air China aircraft painted in flag-less liveries in order to be allowed to serve Taiwan. Onboard, the seat product felt worn out and the lunch that was served didn't look appetizing. I'm not too surprised because it's a flight under two hours. The political differences between Taiwan and China make this flight interesting because it's uncommon to have scheduled flights between two hostile enemies, especially on their respective flag carriers. As an American I don't fully understand the situation, but everything felt perfectly normal including our arrival and entrance into China. Shanghai is beautiful and I enjoyed exploring the world's third-most populated city. This is my second time sitting in the private suite back home from Italy, and the glamor of it still blows me away! For decades now, airlines based in the Middle East are establishing themselves as the luxury carriers of the sky. Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar all pride themselves on fantastic service, great inflight entertainment, and most importantly firm safety records. Emirates (being a flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates) offers a modern product that's inspired by Arabic quality. The First Class cabin features 14 exclusive Private Suites with closable doors, a mini-bar (that is restocked throughout the flight), on-demand meals whenever you please, unlimited caviar, a shower, pajamas, and any toiletry needed. It's a truly immersive experience that made the 8-flight feel like a playdate. I was most impressed with the catering and the system of dining, as you can browse the extensive menu for snacks, a gourmet multicourse meal, unique selections of side dishes, and exquisite desserts. The airline has 107 aircraft in its fleet and they serve 80 destinations from the UK across Europe and North Africa. Jet2's target clientele is young solo travelers and family vacationers looking for a "package holiday", where the flights, transportation, and accommodation are all booked together by a tour operator (such as Jet2 Holidays). My flight from Tenerife was onboard one of Jet2's almost-retired 757s. They acquired 17 second-hand 757s almost two decades ago, and it's average fleet age of 33 years is expensive to upkeep and maintain. It's similar to a domestic American carrier's First Class product but with a higher level of customer service. Every time I fly Icelandair they deliver a consistently good service, and I have no big complaints about the airline. Also, the aircraft in the video (TF-ISX) is painted in a special livery celebrating 100 years of Icelandic sovereignty! The 757 is painted in the colors of the Icelandic flag: Blue for the blue of the mountains, sea, and sky, red for the fire of the volcanoes, and white for the ice of the glaciers. Red Air was founded in 2020 to help connect Venezuelan people to the United States, but they had to register in a different country to avoid American sanctions. The airline operates two MD-82s between Miami - La Romana - Caracas. This winter an A320 under lease will join Red Air's fleet to replace the MD-82s, effectively ending a 43-year lifetime of McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series passenger service in the Western world. Nowadays the only place to find this aircraft type in commercial service will be in countries like Venezuela, Somalia, and Iran (tricky to visit as an American). The former US Military base opened as Sondrestrom Air Base in 1941 to protect the island from Nazi Germany after they successfully invaded Denmark. Kangerlussuaq is Greenland’s 17th most-populated town, but it was chosen as an ideal location for an airport due to its stable weather. It continued to be an American base throughout the Cold War until 1992. Since Nuuk is Greenland's largest city with 19,000 people, there's been a desire for the hub to be situated there. After years of construction, Nuuk finally opened its long-awaited new runway this week, and the A330-800neo "Tuukkaq" landed there from Copenhagen on a media flight (that Air Greenland strictly banned me from joining). This effectively retired Kangerlussuaq's hub status, and the airport will scale back it's activity to only a few Dash 8 flights, cruise charter flights, military operations, and search & rescue. Air Greenland has been wholly owned by the Greenlandic Government since 2019 when SAS sold its remaining shares. SAS partnered with a Danish mining company in 1960 to create the airline named Grønlandsfly. Over the years Air Greenland has benefited greatly from the United States military contracts transporting soldiers and supplies to (Pituffik) Thule Air Base. Among its mixed fixed-wing and helicopter fleet stands a lone Airbus A330-800neo nicknamed "Tuukkaq". It was delivered in 2022 and only operates between Greenland and Denmark like a shuttle. Transportation on the island is tricky as there aren’t highways or roads connecting villages, especially in its capital city Nuuk. Boats are useful but most of the coastlines freeze in the winter. Aviation has long been the method of choice for people connecting domestically and leaving. Greenland imports about 80% of its food and isn’t self-sufficient, making them reliant on Denmark to send groceries. The tourism industry reflects only 10% of Greenland’s economy as it’s still blossoming. I love visiting the island but the infrastructure and customer service needs improvements across the board. Greenland is an autonomous colony of Denmark that for centuries has lived as a largely isolated society until the 1950s when the Danes began to treat Greenland really bad. Denmark’s de-Greenlandification included building Euro-style apartment complexes, mandatory use of the Danish language, and forced schooling for Greenland's youth in Denmark. They were successful in turning Greenlanders from primarily subsistence hunters into being urbanized wage earners. In recent years a culture shift has grown pride in Greenlandic culture and Denmark has respected the wishes of the people and passed the Self-Government Act in 2009, allowing Greenland to control its natural resources, police, and judicial system. They have done a great job innovating First & Business Class experiences with exceptional food, loads of amenities, and an insanely diverse staff of flight attendants brought in from around the world. Thanks to Emirates, Dubai Airport is the world's busiest airport by international passenger traffic. DXB's Terminal 3 is over 18,440,000 sq ft! The business class lounge was incredible featuring many cuisine stations and amenities. My flight to Jakarta was on their old 2-3-2 layout Business Class cabin unveiled back in 2007. It's quite an outdated product and Emirates is actively refurbishing these aircraft will all new seats, a move necessary to compete with other luxurious Middle Eastern airlines. The onboard food menu is extensive and ordering is on-demand due to passengers coming from many different time zones! The beautiful wood finishes were my favorite part of the cabin, and I had a great experience on these old (but still amazing) Emirates 777-300 Business Class seats. Lynx Air offers a no-frills experience with some of Canada's cheapest airfare prices, which has historically been needed to compete with Air Canada and WestJet's unchecked monopoly. Lynx Air currently has 9 aircraft (all Boeing 737 MAX-8), with plans to order 38 more over the next few years. Although having just one class of service helps keep operating costs down for the airline, lacking any buy-on-board menu is disappointing, especially for Lynx's longer flights such as Vancouver-Orlando or Toronto-San Francisco. *UPDATE* As of February 22, Lynx Air is filing for bankruptcy and will be shutting down, blaming rising costs, unfavorable exchange rates, and competitive tension for its demise. For me personally, I believe Lynx had poor leadership, weak brand identity, and unprofitable routes with tickets actually priced too cheap. But this marks the turning point in Canada's low-cost airline market to a point of no return. Canada's failure of a Federal Competition Bureau enables Air Canada (and somewhat WestJet) to own a monopoly on the entire country's air travel. Ticket prices have always been very high, and Air Canada gets away with ripping off travelers while offering a cheap product. Every time a low-cost carrier tries to make it in Canada, it usually fails rather quickly. And now in 2024, with Flair Airlines drowning in financial woes, Swoop's recent shutdown, Sunwing being dissolved into its acquirer WestJet, Canada Jetlines struggling to expand, and WestJet's rising prices, it has turned Canada's hopes at keeping a low-cost airline pretty dim. The airline started installing these seats on its 737 fleet back in 2019, replacing the previous Euro-style Premium that had 3 Economy seats with the middle seat blocked off. Based in Calgary, Alberta, WestJet is Canada's second-largest airline, operating around 800 flights and 70,000 passengers daily. Although the airline serves every province in Canada, its presence in the East is limited, especially in the Maritimes. I had a wonderful experience flying home after spending the weekend in Winnipeg. I booked this flight only 23 hours before, and the two flights between Winnipeg-Toronto and Toronto-Fort Lauderdale cost only $ 701 total. The lunch meal was delicious and high-quality, and the crew members were friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend WestJet over Air Canada if the routes and pricing work for you, as the passenger experience is just better. My ticket was initially booked in Economy, but a week before the flight I got an email offering a $900 fee to upgrade on the red-eye flight from New York to Frankfurt. Lufthansa is Germany's largest airline along with one of the few carriers still operating the 747-400 (nicknamed Queen of the Skies). Its remaining fleet of 8 double-deckers won't be around much longer, with rumors of a retirement imminent around 2026. The 747-400's in Lufthansa's fleet do not offer First Class, unlike the 747-8's. And honestly the Business Class product in the -400 is unimpressive and outdated. Frankfurt-based competitor Condor Airlines offers a much better product and service for half the booking price. JetBlue surprised the aviation industry in 2003 when they ordered 100 E190's to serve medium-sized markets deemed too small for it's fleet of A320. In terms of passenger comfort you can't beat the cozy 2-2 configuration! But as a low-cost-airline, JetBlue has struggled maintaining the aging Embraers and it's burdened the airline with poor fuel burn and performance. Burlington is Vermont's largest city and home to the state's largest airport. Our flight flew along Upstate New York's eastern border with beautiful scenery during the way south.
