As basic interactions with these completely foreign artifacts create noise, the deer discover and manipulate these complex and violent tones, mouth noises, and tastes. This investigation results in a sonic landscape built upon no-input mixing practices, where harsh noise and entombed memories of humanity embrace before being extinguished by ambivalent hooves. We, the human species, will not be around forever – however, the contemporary era has ensured that our posthumous presence on Earth will not be ‘lone and level sands’, but unfathomable amounts of plastics and other synthetic materials, ghosts of an age named for our impact. Crisafulli creates this piece to calibrate their own (and therefore, an audience’s) relationship to this fact, while using tactics of absurdity and noise to evade the sense of doom that so often looms over environmentalist topics. For humans, how can our relationship to the land shift when witnessing our complete absence – and for the deer, what tastes better; XLR cable or photographs of someone’s grandmother? Padra Crisafulli (Creator / Director / Composer) is a theatre artist whose work explores extreme states of emotion, perception, and being. They frequently work in performance and installation settings as a sound designer, director, and core creative collaborator. They have collaborated on work presented at the Prague Quadrennial, the National Museum of Serbia, the Park Avenue Armory, Edinburgh + Hollywood Fringe, La Jolla Playhouse, and online. They are a current MFA candidate in Sound Design at the UCSD Department of Theatre + Dance, and hold a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in Theatre Directing. Raphael Mishler (Mask Designer) creates striking and tactile visual work for live performance. He has developed work for the stage with artists including Raja Feather Kelly and Taylor Mac and in the streets with organizations including Fight for 15!, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, and Naming the Lost. Nano3 has served users from more than 180 academic groups and over 110 companies with nano/micro-fabrication needs ranging from research on electronic and optoelectronic materials and devices to emerging, interdisciplinary, and rapidly growing fields, including biomedical and biochemical devices, heterogeneous integrated devices and circuits, and sensor technology. The facility consists of 7,000 square feet of Class-100 and Class-1000 cleanrooms, surrounded by 3,000 square feet of analytical and design labs for materials characterization. Nano3 instrumentation includes a state-of-the-art electron-beam lithography system with linewidths down to 8 nanometers, which enables major new research in nanomagnetics for data storage, nanophotonics for intra-chip communications, and molecular sensing for biomedical applications. Led by Lisa Cartwright and Nan Renner, Embodied Pacific features multiyear projects by thirty artists working with researchers in laboratories, field sites, and archives in SoCal and the Pacific Islands. Three Lives is a curatorial effort of Lisa Cartwright, Joe Riley, Stephania Torres-Londono, Leandro Martínez Depietri, Clarissa Chevalier, and Stephania Torres-Londono sited at Gallery QI and the UCSD Library’s art gallery. These exhibitions feature work engaging with what we know, and forms of knowing, about three key figures in the history of oceanography: Easter Ellen Cupp, June Pattullo, and Anita Hall, who are the subjects of projects by artists Amy Adler, Johnnie Chatman, Nicolas G. These sister Three Lives exhibitions invite immersive engagement in questions about how we structure the histories of the hidden worlds that are the ocean and its little-known researchers. Combining the talents of playwright Hortense Gerardo, director of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering’s Anthropology, Performance, and Technology (APT) Program, UC San Diego Teaching Professor Amy Eguchi and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Arts Robert Twomey, “Beyond the Black Box” explores questions of whether robots can generate a sense of fun defined as “pleasure with surprises.” The work was loosely informed by the story of Eurydice, “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Toy Story,” and featured six interactive robots and a selection of robots from past research projects conducted at UC San Diego. “Beyond the Black Box: A Girl and Her Dog” is part of the series “Dances with Robots” and will be informed by data from creative AI research experiments performed by the APT Program. The work is part of On Display Global by Heidi Latsky, commemorating the International Day of Persons With Disabilities. </video>
