Throughout much of our history, humans have had to compete for territory, resources, and mates to survive and thrive. And although we no longer must compete for these things in the same way that we once did, our competitive nature remains. In our sinful nature, we are inherently wired to project strength, power, and status to those around us. One of the ultimate traps in life is spending too much time comparing our lives with others. We compare ourselves in virtually every area of our lives. We compare each other’s homes, our jobs, our bodies, clothing, watches, cars… you name it. We compare our relationships and significant others. The problem is… When we are constantly making these comparisons, we begin perceiving ourselves as “inferior” in some way. In other words, you are arrested in your development and there will be unresolved issues from your childhood. Certain situations, experiences, or feelings trigger these unresolved issues.
