We have just delivered our train to Wangen bei Olten and since there is no load for our return trip to the hub, we will be travelling with the locomotive solo. We begin with a short shunting maneuver, change cabs and take the locomotive all the way to Dottikon-Dintikon. Often, as is the case today, there is no space in a station closer to our base to turn around and therefore block the tracks temporarily. After all, dispatching and operating trains is like solving a big puzzle game and everything needs to fit seamlessly on the densely used network without delaying or unnecessarily stopping other trains. There is space for us in Dottikon-Dintikon though and after a short stop, we return to Lenzburg and take a left for the final stretch to todays destination, the railCare-Hub Schafisheim. This allows for a 15min schedule between Killwangen-Spreitenbach and Winterthur, where both lines split their ways again. Switzerland is a small country in the middle of Europe and Zurich is a hub for international trains in all neighbouring countries and beyond. The Railjet Xpress connects Zurich with Vienna (Wien), with stops at major cities in between. One daily connection even extends as far as Budapest in Hungary. It takes less than 8 hours for the train to arrive in the center of Vienna, while passing through beautiful alpine scenery in eastern Switzerland and western Austria. Later on, in the Austrian plains, the train reaches speeds of up to 230km/h and is therefore considered a high-speed train. Our job today is to drive the train to Buchs SG, where a colleague of ÖBB will take over and continue through Liechtenstein into Austria. The cooperation between SBB and ÖBB doesn't stop there, all Nightjet sleeper trains in Europe are operated by ÖBB and connect Zurich with Prague, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Zagreb and many other places in Europe. The S8 connects Winterthur, the second largest city in the canton, with Pfäffikon SZ, right at the shores of Lake Zurich. It is among the longest lines in the ZVV S-Bahn network and spans almost the entire canton of Zurich, from the northeast to the southeast and even leaves into the neighbouring canton Schwyz, which is what the SZ stands for. Shortly after our departure, we'll enter the high-speed-line (NBS) between Mattstetten and Rothrist, where we'll reach speeds of up to 200km/h. Our first stop, Olten, follows just shortly after the NBS ends. The following route couldn’t be more different from the high-speed section before: Since the Hauenstein base tunnel - Switzerlands first base tunnel - is partially closed for maintenance work, our train is diverted over the mountain. A quiet and rural single-track section up the hill brings us to the tunnel portal of Switzerlands first railway tunnel. Construction started in 1853, and the tunnel was completed by 1858. The majority of the line used to be double-track, which is evident in tunnels and on bridges that are wide enough for two tracks. Today, the route is single-track and only used by the local train S9 ("Läufelfingerli"), a few cargo trains, and when the base tunnel is closed, as it is case today. Trains to and from Austria typically stop at Buchs station in Switzerland, where the train is handed over to either Swiss or Austrian staff. However, due to construction work between Buchs and Feldkirch (AT), the trains are being diverted via St. Margrethen for a full month. Join me on this interesting detour along routes that this train normally doesn't take: After following the main line to Rorschach, we will head north towards Romanshorn along a branch line. There, we will join another main line, which is frequently used by InterCity and regional trains, but not by the Nightjet or Railjet. Other long-distance trains serve the airport, but we do not. Therefore, our route takes us through Kloten, which is typically only served by the S7 service and used by a few freight trains. The final unique part of our journey comes at the end. Due to the closure of the Wipkingen viaduct for construction, we are diverted through the Käferberg tunnel, passing by Hardbrücke station, which is only served by S-Bahn trains. Be sure to stop by and say hello! Welcome aboard the Zentralbahn (formerly Brünigbahn) on this beautiful spring day in 2011. Our journey starts in Interlaken Ost, the eastern train station of the city of Interlaken in the Bernese Alps. Located between beautiful Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, the name Interlaken is explained rather quickly in Latin: Inter lacūs, between the lakes. Our train follows the coastline of Lake Brienz until we reach Meiringen. We then change our direction of travel, which involves a new locomotive pulling our train and turn right towards the Brünigpass, a small mountain pass that just exceeds 1000 meters over sea level. With gradients up to 128‰, it is considered a steep route and the trains climb and descend with the help of a rack and pinion system. After the Brünigpass, the route goes down the mountain again, with views onto Lake Lungern, Lake Sarnen and finally Lake Lucerne. As we pass by Lake Lungern, we are only a few Kilometers away from the geographical centerpoint of Switzerland. This is the closest train you can take through the actual center of Switzerland. If you were to leave the train in Alpnachstad, you could visit Mount Pilatus with the steepest rack and pinion railway in the world: A whopping 480‰ incline! As the area gets more and more populated, it is a clear sign that we are about to reach Lucerne, the terminus of our trip today. The second EMU that we need for rush hour wasn't ready in time and instead of coupling it in the siding right by the station, we have to get it at the maintenance depot Oberwinterthur. It's still a bit chilly, so don't put your warm clothes away just yet. However I can promise you it's comfortably warm in the drivers cab, so sit back and and enjoy the ride! This line is the only direct connection between Basel SBB and Zurich Airport and runs hourly in each direction. It also provides an important link to the many stops in between and here's where the "air" comes into play: This train has a Swiss Airlines flight number and Swiss Tickets from or to Basel are accepted on the train. There are no flights between Zurich and Basel, which is the reason for this partnership between Swiss and SBB. The same service also exists from/to Lugano and Zurich Airport. Obviously, not only flying passengers are welcome, most passengers travel on a standard ticket, not a boarding pass. It is a regular national InterRegio service and everyone with a valid ticket may use it. It is a beautiful morning to fly low across the ground. No need for seat belts on the train, as always we are expecting a smooth ride and zero turbulence. Enjoy the trip! The S19 is in service the whole day and extends a lot in both directions during morning and evening rush hour. During that period, the linie is usually serviced by HVZ-D trains with refurbished DPZ double deckers and Re 420 locomotives on both ends. It then connects Pfäffikon ZH to Koblenz AG. Since the morning rush hour is already over, we operate on the shorter, regular S19 service with a DPZ train. During daytime, the S19 is one of the the shortest services on the Zurich S-Bahn network. It has been quite warm here in the past few weeks and rain has been rare, therefore I suggest to cool down with this video and enjoy the light rain onto the windscreen from the comfort of our home. We begin in Engelberg, a picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, renowned for winter sports and particularly ski jumping. Today, our journey takes us along the old rack and pinion route, which was replaced by a new tunnel in December 2010, just a few weeks after this cab ride was filmed. This film is a historic document that can never be recreated again, since the line you're about to see no longer exists. With gradients of up to 246‰, the rack and pinion section required low speeds and did not allow for trains to pass each other. The new tunnel reduces the gradient to a comparatively moderate 105‰, enables longer trains and shortens the travel time between Lucerne and Engelberg from 61 to 47 minutes. Additionally, the transport capacity more than doubled, increasing from 400 passengers per hour to 1000. But of course, we’re not here for the tunnel.
