Initially, the RCS began as a choral hobby group composed of students from the Conducting Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. One of RCS's defining characteristics is their focus on performing original compositions. Jin Chengzhi has contributed over a hundred original choral works to the ensemble, including nine choral suites.
