Thanks to all my awesome current & future subscribers for making this channel possible. <video> Helicopter Rotor Blade Phase Lag / Flap Lag In Real Time. Description: Helicopter rotor blade phase lag is often mistaken as gyroscopic precession, especially in the world of RC helicopters to explain why the acting force of the rotor blades are about 90 degrees later in the cycle from where the pitch change from the swashplate input was applied. This video shows how the rotor blade on a full size helicopter reaches peak amplitude about 1/4 rotor rotation after the maximum amount of cyclic input was given - this is phase lag. The time it takes for the blade to fully respond from the initial control input. It's best to turn down the playback speed to 0.25 to really see this in action. Watch the blade grip rotational movement in relation to the tip of the rotor blade amplitude (how high the blade flies). You'll notice the blade grip reaches maximum cyclic pitch rotation on the left side of the helicopter but the blade itself doesn't reach maximum amplitude until it's at the back pointed toward the tail. We can deduce this helicopter is flying forwards in other words. This delay in reaction time is caused by the natural flap resonance frequency of the rotor blade system. Basically the rotor system acts like a pendulum which has a fixed frequency and thus fixed phase lag angle. In the full size world, this "flap lag" or "phase delay" angle can be as low as around 70 degrees from where the input was given, all the way up to 90 degrees. This is dependent on the rotor head design. In the world of RC helicopters, this flap/phase lag/delay is very close to 90 degrees because the pivot point of the head axle (what allows blade flap on our models) is generally centered in the rotor head. The further away from the center of the rotor head the flapping occurs (flap hinge offset), the smaller the phase lag angle will be. Other minor influences on our RC helicopters that affect just how close to 90 degrees the phase lag will be include rotor blade grip and rotor blade stiffness; but for all intents and purposes, the lag angle is 90 degrees on most RC helicopters. I'll be covering these common questions as I install these anti spark XT90 connectors (correctly called XT90S connectors) on two new RC LiPo battery packs. I've been using XT90S anti-spark connectors for close to a year now and am very impressed! So much so, I've replaced most of my high power LiPo battery connectors with these anti spark ones and can't get over how they have completely eliminated the scary spark along with the pitting and carbon tracing that used to occur every single time I plugged a battery into my higher voltage RC helicopters and EDF jets. While XT90 anti spark connectors may cost a little bit more than standard XT90 connectors, you get that money back many times over by no longer having to replace pitted and damaged connectors every year or so; not to mention no longer dealing with voltage sag and increased ripple voltage from pitted RC connectors. Description: Looking for a great looking, pre-built, simple set of R2-D2 dome lights but don't want to spend too much? So was I and I've found them - AstroPixels! This set provides all the standard lighting in R2-D2's dome which includes three HPs (holoprojectors), two PSIs (process status indicators), front & rear Logics (you know, the blinky panel lights). We have Darren Poulson to thank for this all inclusive R2D2 dome light kit, which in my opinion is currently the best ready made, pre-programmed R2D2 dome lighting kit you can get for the dollar. At around $100 USD (+shipping), Darren's light kit is less than half the cost of the more popular Teeces or RSeries R2-D2 dome light kits; and emulates the fluid analog look of a color wheel that many R2 builders are after without the build complications or tedious fiber optic installs. AstroPixels R2 light kits use red/green/blue addressable LEDs (just like the RSeries) controlled by an ESP32 microcontroller running the Reeltwo Astromech RSeries library. Basic 3-conductor (power/ground/signal) RC servo wiring/connectors are used to connect the light panels to the control board making it a very simple lighting kit to connect and set up. The control board also has extra headers incase you want to add other lights such as a magic panel. The ESP32 micro controller board is powered by 5 VDC, and recommended power connectivity is through the green screw terminal block on the board (OBSERVE POLARITY)! As shown in the video, nominal current load running the included lights ONLY is around 500mA and peaks around 700mA. A stable, 1 Amp power source (buck converter or regulator) is recommended. Darren has pre-soldered all the headers on the light boards and control board, installed the R2 ReelTwo dome light script and tested each light set before shipping, making this R2 dome light kit a true plug and play install as demonstrated in the video. Remember what it was like, or wondering what it was like? If so, here's a 1986 promotional video by GMP showcasing their lineup of helicopters. I recall this video playing on a looping VHS tape at our local hobby shop next to the GMP heli display. While I was only flying RC airplanes at the time and certainly couldn't afford an RC helicopter in my mid teens, I was always captivated watching that video. For better or worse, the seed was planted and the dark side was calling! I finally acquired my first RC helicopter as a young adult in 1989 - a Miniature Aircraft X-Cell 40 and have loved this hobby ever since. Such great memories from a very fun and enjoyable time in RC aviation. Pure line of sight flying with no BS to distract. FM & PCM radios. The smells & sounds of nitro hanging in air. An equal mixture of frustration & fun. Just mastering the nose-in-hover for many of us was cause for celebration. DIY Tire Valve Stem Replacement Tutorial. Description: DIY tire valve stem replacement tutorial using the ever popular manual tire changer. Safe on alloy wheels and works equally well with TPMS sensor valve stems or metal valve steams. Make sure you use quality brand name tire valves during replacement! Premature failure of tire values has become a big and dangerous problem over the past couple decades with several valve stem recalls due to sudden failure resulting in rapid tire deflations from low quality valve stems. As shown in this video, these one year old cheap no name valve stems have almost rotted through and would have failed shortly if not caught in time. Description: Is your Woods timer switch just clicking and no longer turning on? If so, the primary load resistor and 100uf capacitor inside may have failed. These are two very inexpensive components (less than $1 combined) and may be all that is required to bring your $30 Woods or similar timer switches back to life. If you have some rudimentary soldering and electronic DIY skills, this should be a fun and rewarding little project for you. Of course, there are many things that can go wrong with electronic switches like this, and this is just one example of what might be wrong showing the steps to diagnose and repair the problem. After opening and looking at several of these switches in our home after I repaired this faulty one, all were showing varying amounts of overheating of that load resistor along with varying amounts of capacitor degradation (likely due to the heatsinking off the hot load resistor). This is an anecdotally low sample size, so it may or may not be a common problem with these switches. In one of our Woods 60 minute timer switches that was still fairly new, I was still able to get the visual value reading off that specific resistor and it was in fact a 2K Ohm (red/black/red). I'm sure the 2.2K Ohm resistor I used in this specific repair will be fine however, but that is your call. I now plan on replacing these two components in our all other Woods timer switches with 1W 2K high temp ceramic resistors and ensuring they are properly elevated off the PCB. I'll also be replacing the 50V 100uf electrolytic capacitors with better quality Rubycon, Nichicon or Panasonic ones. Description: A wireless total stop system for pressure washers is another safe total stop method for electric pressure washers over the usual wired pressure switch TSS. There is no pressure switch activation required, and thus none of the associated pressure related issues that plague pressure switch TSS's. Both TSS methods have pros and cons which will be covered to help you choose the best TSS for your electric pressure washer. Both also share the same important benefit: They ensure electric pressure washer pumps last much longer! In short, regardless if you go with a mechanical pressure switch or an electronic wireless switch, you'll increase pump life. They are also Canadian based, and as a Canadian, that was also important to me for future parts & product support. These are the main reasons I have finally given up on big box store pressure washers after decades of throwing my money away in the false economy of disposable washers with little to no parts support. I should have purchased one of these better commercial grade grade pressure washers with a proper triplex pump years ago, but I just didn't know any better. My last horrible experience with a Greenworks Pro brushless motor pressure washer, which cost a lot of money, didn't even last 3 years (brushless motor control module failed & not available as a spare part); that was the final straw! If you too are fed up with the false economy of big box store pressure washers, do yourself a favor and invest in a commercial grade unit with a long lasting and serviceable triplex pump from a reputable brand. For weekly residential use, they should last many years if not decades, provided they are looked after and serviced as required. In the long run, they will save time, money and frustration. Description: DIY time, let's make a Jacob's Ladder. Jacob's ladders were made popular back in the 50's & 60's being used as techy eye and sound catching props in science fiction and horror movies. There's something intriguingly mesmerizing about watching and listening to that glowing electric arc of ionized air/plasma as it sizzles its way up the ladder, pops at the top, and then restarts the cycle over and over again. A Jacobs ladder is educational and they are not that hard to build yourself for very little money; usually being under $100 if you purchase a used high voltage transformer or already have some of the parts on hand. To get that cool classic movie "buzz" or "sizzle" electrical arc noise, old school high voltage 50/60Hz step-up transformers must be used. As shown in the video, oil furnace/boiler ignition transformers are great DIY options as most are rated at 10,000 Volts so enough voltage to self spark across an air gap. Oil burner ignition transformers are also low in cost, easy to find (both new and used) and fairly safe when given the respect they deserve / demand. A few words on safety! HIGH VOLTAGE CAN KILL! If you're not comfortable working with and around the high voltages demonstrated in this Jacob's Ladder build video and don't understand the basic precautions of working with and around higher voltages, please don't attempt a build like this. However, if you know & understand the basics and follow the required safety precautions, I think you'll find this a very fun, rewarding and entertaining DIY build project. You can make it as basic and easy or as complicated as you want. I wanted my Jacobs build to have the flavor of a prop from the 50's or 60's, so I made a simple cube shaped enclosure with rounded edges from glossy black PLA plastic to give it the look of bakelite along with some shiny aluminum standoffs. An attractive wooden enclosure would look great and time period accurate too! I never mentioned the top and bottom spark rod air gap distances on my Jacob's ladder in the video. This was intentional as it's going to be different depending on your transformer, the material your rods are made from and the thickness of the rods you use. There are also many variables in the air that will have an impact such as air movement, dust, humidity and temperature. Basically, anything that affects the ionization qualities of the air, are going to play a roll in the air gap distances of your rods. In short, you'll have to experiment. With that said, here are the air gap distances of my rods to at least give you a starting point. My bottom air gap is about 5mm. The top of the rods I have spaced about 45mm apart which allows the spark to reach the very top of the ladder (24"/60cm of length) about 75% of the time if the air is dead still. Any air movement, and the arc will break sooner. Please experiment with gap distances to get the best results that you're after. TIP: The rods slowly get carboned up during use and arc distance performance drops, so they must be kept clean if you want to maintain good arc qualities. Description: So, you're thinking of dismounting / mounting ATV tires with a manual tire changer; but when you put the wheel on your manual changer, you realize there's a problem... The centering hole is huge! This is exactly what happened to me, but it's a pretty easy solution to the LH (large hole) issue that many ATV, UTV and similar wheels share. Get out your trusty drill and dill a couple holes in the manual tire changer's mounting plate - it's that simple. If you have multiple ATV & UTV wheels, you may need to space the holes out around the plate for different bolt patterns. Provided you drill the holes in the plate so the ATV/UTV/LH wheel is centered, you can even use a Duck Head adapter modification for a super easy and scratch free tire removal and mounting process on both steel or alloy wheels. Big bulbous ATV/UTV tires are some of the simplest tires to dismount & mount at home. I used to do it completely by hand, using tire spoons before getting a manual tire changer & duck head mod, and while tire spoons worked; the process was quite difficult, took time and it always scratched the rim of the wheels no matter how careful I was.
