Channel Title: REEL KIWI FISHING FISH WHISPERER (JASE NEUTE) Channel Description: These little vids I put together is of my own experiences and show the way I like to fish for some of NZ fish species, I fish a lot on the Hauraki Gulf (my back door step). I also travel to the far North each year where I target Kings on jigs and have started to enjoy straylining for Snapper in the shallow Bays and Harbours - Occasionally we also like doing a bit of softbaiting or micro jigging but our main fishing revolves around straylining. I hope you enjoy some of the footage and I will also try to incorporate a few tips and tricks on how and why we fish some of these places. <video> A big shark and magic morning jigging for kings - another fun Reel Kiwi Fishing adventure Description: Kingfish time A good 20yrs ago the boys and I changed over from chasing big snaps to kingfish. We had lost our fishing mojo due to 40yrs plus of constant snapper fishing and decided to see if chasing kings would spice things up. At first we were a little frustrated with it as we didn't get a lot, but venturing out wider and further north we started realising where to find them when jigging or livebaiting. Our day four weather forecast was for premo conditions. With it being hard going on the snapper side of things over the past couple days we decided to go and jig for kings at an old haunt. It had been a good 3-4yrs since we had really tried for kings on our annual far north trips. The spot we were heading for was just mins from the Top 10 where we were staying and this spot used to hold some good fish up to 20kilo. We had even caught a few we couldn't stop. We hooked the boat up and 1min later we were dropping it in and heading for our spot. The sun had already awoken as we made our way out into the bay. The sea was smooth in places between the light breeze patches and it was only going to get better as the morning wore on. A few mins later we were dropping our jigs away. It was so good coming back to our old haunt and I was hoping the Lowrance wasn't lying to us with the baitfish sign it was showing. There was baitfish bubbling on the surface also in spots which was great to see. After moving about and reading the sign it took about 5mins for our first hook up. I was onto a nice little green back, only small but it was a good warm up and still a lot of fun. We moved back up for another drift and this time it was Stevo's turn to hook up. It was another fun tussle and although going 85 long Stevo was keen to watch it swim away. Another re-drift saw another hook up. It was great to see our old spot still produce, not like how it used to but still awesome to see. This one was a better fish than my last and even pulled a little string! I tried to put a bit of hurt on him as he gave me sign he had made it to the rough. This one was a lot better model and a lot better fight with my Cavalla being stripped of line and my jig rod bent like a horse shoe. A couple mins later I got busted. I wasn't too sure if it was from it making it to the rough or being a bronzie haunt as well it may have been sharked? It's always a bugger when ya lose one but more so to a shark. I re-tied and moved us back up for another drift. it was great the wind had died for us as it made for a very slow drift which was perfect. It was like Stevo and I were tag teaming them as once again he was hooked up this time. It was just a small one and noticing the stress jumping of his jig rod I knew something bigger was chasing it. Couple more winds then the next thing his reel was screaming away. His little king fight had now turned into a battle, a bronzie had taken a liking to it. It was an epic battle and what made it more so was we were able to get it close enough to the boat to be able to get his jig back. They are such amazing creatures when seen in the wild. The sea was starting to become silky smooth as we headed back for another drop. We were hoping that would be our only shark encounter. The crazy thing is it's the very first ever shark we had caught from here in the years of fishing it. I was hooked up again to another little rod bender which went 90 long which went back to fight another day. My next king was just another small one around 76/77cm and Stevo's last one went sim size. The sharks were still there so after a couple hours of morning fun and not wanting to kill fish just to have more fun we called it. It was awesome to come back and catch a few kings from our spot and awesome having a fun few battles. Jigging for kings is so much fun and 100% if you find yourself getting bored with your fishing, this is something that can bring that buzz back.... We did take the long trip out launching from Rangiputa as I wanted to get the little Osprey in some choppy seas. Make sure to subscribe and leave a comment below to show support to my little fishing adventures channel - have a great Xmas everyone... </video> <video> Big snapper kontiki chaos on the magical 90 prt 1 - a bit fishy but hard going manual tiki fishing Description: Stevo and I hit the magical 90mile on the last day of our far north trip. We didn't know what was installed for us but by the end of the day we had worked hard for our fish than usual. Part one we start the day of as planed as the sun rose. There's nothing like setting your first set as the sun rises and the Tasman sea rolls in at your feet. Our first set went out as planned, but the retrieval soon turned to chaos as the electric winch strained under a heavy load. Although it felt like we were pulling in a heap of weed, we could feel resistance, something big pulling back. With Stevo having the line wrapped around him to hold the enormous strain, he was pulled quickly towards the water where upon our electric winch did a couple of cartwheels and dragged along the sand. In doing so the safety kicked in to stop the winch from burning it's electrics so instead just blew a fuse. Blowing the fuse we were unable to retrieve the line on the spool. There was still huge strain on the line and being close to the hooks trace line we bot pulled it in slowly and laid the line up and down the beach so it wouldn't turn in to a big pile of messy line. Once the hooks were making there way out of the water we had one big lump of weed where the trace line meet the main line. It had collected a lot but it wasn't the full problem of something still giving us resistance and even sometimes pulling back. It felt like we were dragging in half a dozen big rays or even a few big sharks, which isn't surprising being on the wild west coast. As the hooks came in there were a couple of broken traces indicating something big had been attached. But at last we had snapper starting to hit the sand and of good size. We thought we were going to go through all this for nothing. They were good size fish which was reliving for us as by the end we only had 5 snaps. It's not to bad when ya end up with a few 60-70cm beauties after a bit of chaos. We managed to sort out the handle but we didn't have a screw driver to open the electrics which normally holds a spare fuse - so our day on the 90 was going to be a fun one where we would have to work for our fish. </video> <video> A look back at some of my fun surfcasting adventures off Muriwai, Kaipara and the north. Description: I have some awesome days off the sand and epic adventures when it comes to my surfcasting. Here's a little vid on some of the fish I've caught on those epic adventures. The far north is a hot place to fish, but even close to home can provide some excellent fish at times. The new MC Nano is quite a nice rod and paired with the T-Rex makes for a great surf combo. A bit heavier than the Kotare and Flite surf with a lot of feel difference so if you're looking at these two combo's I would suggest trying to get the two in your before buying as it is a personal preference. Take care out there and tight lines </video> <video> That's a couple nicey's there Stevo - the tiki bringing home the bacon 💪 #reelkiwifishingadventures Description: </video> <video> A bit of Muriwai magic - a fun couple hrs solo flicking a few baits into the wild west coast surf Description: It had been awhile since I had got a line wet and getting that fresh salt west coast air filling my lungs. With a small swell and a pretty good tide for a flick off the Muriwai low tide banks, I set off for the top end of Muriwai straight after work. The low was around 4.30, so arriving there just after 3.30 I had about 2-3hrs up my sleeve before I would be pushed off by the rising tide. Nearing the end I was keeping an eye out for a nice little bank to stand on to be able to cast into forming channels that the top end of Muriwai likes to make for us surfcasters. I came across a nice little bank that was easily reached with minimal wading, this was the spot and it looked pretty fishy - well that's what I was hoping for. I was going to run a mutsu suicide hook on the MC and just let it fish itself while I concentrated fishing the Kotare in hand more with a J hook. I cottoned on my first baits (half pillies) and flicked them out into the surf. With the MC running the mutsu I always run a light-ish drag so the fish can slightly pull a bit of line but load up the rod and set that hook. The great thing about fishing these low tides off Muriwai, you're within mtrs to the channel so you don't have to cast to the horizon to hit deepish water. Both baits in and both rods in the holders I was ready for my first bites to happen. It was the MC that had the first nibbles and with no action as yet on the Kotare I grabbed the MC and stood at the ready. It felt like small snapper nibbling at my bait at first but as the line went slack a couple times I knew something had picked the bait up and was biting towards me. Lifting the rod slowly, it started to bend. As the line went tight I gave it a slight hit at the top of the lift to set the hook and I was on. It wasn't big and at first I thought it was a kahawai. As it hit the sand I could see little leg like things and it was bright orange and white - yip it was a sweet fat carrot. I'm always stoked when I catch these off the sand. I prefer them over snapper any day. Walking back to put the rod in the holder I noticed the Kotare was nodding away, I was hooked up again. Running over I grabbed it out of the holder and gave a light hit to make sure the hook was set. Could it be another fat carrot? I was hoping it was, but no this one was defiantly a kahawai this time. I don't mind a couple of these guys, I usually use one side for bait and the other to chew on while fishing or taken home and fried up. After putting the carrot and half a fillet of kahawai in the chilly I baited up my second baits. This time I put a chunk of kahawai on the MC to let that mutsu hook do its thing and this would allow me to fish the Kotare in hand. Both baits out once again I had the MC in the holder and stood at the ready with the kotare, but once again it was the MC with the first little touches. Sometimes I find it hard to just leave it and let it just fish itself. I put the Kotare in the holder and grabbed the MC, but no sooner had I had it in hand the bites stopped and the Kotare. Getting to it it started to nod once again, lifting it I lightly struck and I was hooked up again. Man it was pretty fishy with every bait being bitten within seconds. it looked like I was going to maybe have to put one rod away. It gets difficult running two rods up here when it's like this, running between two rods you start to miss fish. This time it was a little west coast snap. It was takeable at around 32-33cm but normally anything under 35cm goes back. While I was playing with the snap, the MC was bending over occasionally with the line being pulled. I knew it would probably be a ray so didn't get too excited once I was able to grab it. They are a lot of fun in the surf but also sometimes you think they are a ray and they can be a kingfish or big snapper but I knew it would be a ray. The great thing was it came off just at the shoreline so saved me the hassle of trying to get the hook out and letting it go. The first hour had been fun anyway with bites and fish hitting the sand. With both rods baited up again I flicked out the MC first. Walking back with the Kotare I was just putting into my holder when something grabbed it. It felt snapper-ish and better than the last one. Still nothing big but I knew if I could land it, it would be accompanying the carrot in the chilly. It's always a fun fight in the surf even if the fish aren't that big. This one hit the sand at last and was roughly 40-45cm and was definitely coming home for tea. The tide was rising and once it does it kicks you off your spot pretty quick. I hung in there for a couple more baits with only kahawai in return. I did come back the next day after having so much fun but I only got into a Trev and kahawai for my troubles. But overall I had a couple fun fishes out on the west coast, and the best part was catching a nice little mixed bag in the end..... Tight lines </video> <video> Christening the new Osprey 465SC - snapper and gurnard on the new Reel Kiwi Fishing rig Description: It's a new era for Reel Kiwi Fishing. Helping the guys from Osprey we put together something special. The all new 465SC is bigger and better in every way. Wider, roomier, softer ride and all the perks. Gen and I head out to christen the new Reel Kiwi Fishing rig on one of Auckland's Harbours where we get into some quality snaps and a few tasty carrots for the bin. My first time out in the new rig I was pretty impressed with everything about it. Tight lines </video> <video> A hard day softbaiting in the north but a nice colorful bin in the end Description: Our day 3 in the far north saw the winds drop but the fishing got harder. Launching in the Harbour just on day break we made our way along the coastline towards Houhora. We thought we would start the morning off once again flicking a few softies around the wash and shallows like the previous day. We had caught nothing of substantial size snapper wise at places we had caught monsters every time fishing the area. We started our softbait adventure at one of our favourite rocks we always start at and have had some nice fish pulled from here. It was a perfect setting with no wind and the sun only just creeping out of bed (nice low light). It was a very quiet start with only just a little rat king caught by Stevo at our first spot. As we headed further down the coast to our next favourite spot we tried a few corners and coves with little to no action, it was starting to look like it was the beginning of one of those days. We arrived at our next spot where we had caught a few horses from but once again it was very quiet apart from stevo landing this time a little snap around 50cm. We tried and tried, it was hard to give up such an epic big fish spot but after a hard hour of trying here, and a couple more corners and coves we had to pull the pin and head for the deep. If they weren't in here we were hoping they were schooling in the deep. We do love to get a couple of deep water softbaiting seshes in when in the north. The other great thing is being in the deep and on foul ground we normally pick up a few reefies. It didn't take long before we had a few reefies starting to hit the deck of the little Osprey. Stevo's first reffie was a granddaddy hapuka and mine a nice size johnny. If the snaps weren't here at least other species were. We were constantly getting hit on our softies which was nice to have and my next fish was a pig fish which made its way to the bin. Dropping my softie once again, mid water it was hit and hit hard. I actually couldn't stop it so had to bust it off before I lost all my line. I didn't even have a chance to turn its head. I was picking it was a shark? but wouldn't have thought a big boy would be interested in a softie. At least we were into the action unlike this morning fishing the shallows. Our reefie plan was coming together nicely as I landed another grandaddy. Stevo had changed over to a slow jig which had been starting to hook up a few fish. After losing one he managed to land a nice size parrot fish which also made its way to the bin. It's actually quite nice to catch other species every now and then instead of the norm. Snapper fishing can get a bit boring if you're doing it all the time and to be honest some of these fish are a lot tastier. We caught a few more before they also went a little quiet so once again we wound up and headed off to another spot. We decided to finish the day off in one of the bays trying for snapper on a spot that has never let us down. It's a nice little reef that rises up from 20mtrs to 12 and fish seem to feed on it. Arriving and flicking out the softie it started off in true form. It looked like our little reef might just produce a few kelpies for us. We did manage a couple for the bin but it was really turning out to be one of those days. With the mussel farm being on our way home it was time to put the softies away, head back to where we started the day off, but this time drop the anchor and berley at our big Trever spot in the mussel farm. This was our last spot and we were hoping to add a couple of big trev's to the bin. It was a fun ending to our day battling a few nice trev's and we even managed a couple mussel farm snaps to add to the bin. Although a bit of a tough day we had a nice colorful bin and in the end even though it was a hard day on the water it was still a fun one with a mate.... Description: Well it was that time of year again and with the new Osprey 465SC in tow Stevo and I headed for our usual far north destination. The weather map was showing quite a bit of wind but that's why we stay in the top 10 in Whatuwhiwhi, it gives us multiple places to fish no matter what way the wind blows from. Arriving mid afternoon the scene was set for a late afternoon surfcast at one of our favourite places to get a line wet.  We fish this spot around half tide out and most times if you want good fishing, you need to line this up with darkness. Low tides meeting the early morning or late evening dark is when it seems the big snapper mooch in closer around this area. Although arriving with still 3-4hrs of light it would be just silly to sit in the cabin and wait, also you just never know in the far north what the fish feel like doing. Unpacking at a steady rate we had the car emptied bar our surfcasting gear. I was itching to get a line wet so we stopped off on the way to grab a couple packs of pillies from the new owners of Reel Rods. If you need anything to do with fishing these guys have it all and it's always great to support the local fishing stores when staying abroad. Hitting the sand just after 6.00 we sit it for a late evening fish. We've had some amazing fishing here at night. Many times fishing till midnight or waking up at 2.00am and fish till dawn. We were hoping that tonight would be no different. As usual it was pretty quiet with just a couple bites up until dusk, then the magic hours set in. We started to get bites and this is how it normally is. Then the bites turn into hits then big runs. It was a little different this night with just the odd rattles at the bait but there was the odd nice hit between them. Not ready for them, we missed quite a few. It turned out to be a quiet night and we gave up just before 11.00 but not until Stevo landed fish of the night. Not a biggy but a nice fish around 50cm. The next morning we had the dreaded winds and rain come through occasionally, We were stuck on land with a strong Northerly blow. This is where the Tiki comes into its own, and this is the main reason we decided to add it to our far north trips - for occasions like this. We did a bit of surfcasting between showers but that day surfcasting can be quite soul destroying with baits just picked at by crabs or baitfish. And even at times untouched. We battled on through the day and rather than just sitting back at camp. We decided due to last night's slow bite and the 30knot wind howling that we would seek a little bit of shelter on the main beach and set the kontiki. There's a lot of stigma around kontiki fishing but there is also a lot that do it. I mainly introduced it to my fishing due to Stevo enjoying this type of fishing. But I also push it as a great family outing and have even had older fisho's thank me for introducing it to them. Some have had to give up their fishing due to injuries or old injuries not allowing them to cast a rod anymore or sit in a bumpy rocky boat etc. When you actually put it all on paper there really isn't much difference than your normal typical fishing. And 9 times out of 10 we never catch our daily limit of fish - we average 5-8 fish between two fishermen. We set 25 hooks - so all up we basically flick out 25 baits between two fisho's. If Stevo and I were surfcasting we would probably average flicking out between 20 - 25 baits each, so we actually flick out more baited hooks than what we would do on the tiki (just about double) either way if it's not your cuppa tea, it's just not but we enjoy doing the odd set when stuck on land. We set up so that we would be pulling it back in just before dark. We ran it for 20mins and had it on the soak for 45mins. We sat in the car between showers and I even got to flick out the surfcaster so thoroughly enjoyed the evening. In the end we only got 3 snaps on the tiki. So for the first day and a half we had only landed a handful of fish, but it was still a fun few hours trying. Tight lines </video> <video> Softbaiting the wash in the far north - a fun day with kingfish surprise Description: Our 2nd day in the north saw us launching the little Osprey off Rangiputa, The wind had calmed a little more for the morning. It was going to pick up in the arvo but the high cliffs running north of Houhora would give us shelter through the day. The plan was to softbait the wash along this area where we have caught some beauties over the past few seasons. It was great to be out at last in the little Osprey and as we headed towards Houhora I wondered what the day would bring. It's amazing country along this stretch with miles of coastline to flick a softy at. We started at a spot where we had caught some solid fish over 80cm from and on my first flick I was hooked up. Not a big boy this time but a nice little kelpie around 40cm which I released to fight another day. Stevo had already managed to hook up on a nice little Johnny which was already on the ice. I flicked out the zman again and after a few little twitches, something had ago at it. I was hooked up again but this one felt a little better. It still wasn't the big one we were hoping for but it was a nice kelpie going roughly 50cm. After letting the first one go I decided this one would keep Johnny company in the bin. It got a little quiet after that and pretty quiet over the next few spots. Usually we hook up on a few at every stop but today was proving to be a bit hard. We made our way down to a corner that holds a lot of bait fish and schools of kahawai this time of year. We do get lots of smaller fish here to but it's always worth a shot. We've caught a few Johnny's from here also and that's what happened on my first cast. It was Johnny number two which once again headed for the bin. In Between a few kahawai and small snaps I at last hooked up to something a lot better, it didn't pull a lot of string but it was a nice fish overall at around 65cm. It was in top condition so I decided to release it. I do love catching the big fish, having a good scrap, a bit of line peeling but out of the catch it is watching it swim away when they can that I love the most. The forecasted southerly was starting to show which did make it a little difficult drifting wise. Although sheltered from the cliffs it's those squally winds you get that race down the coastline that always interrupt your fishing. There were plenty of fish here on the corner of the bay and I landed another little 38cm kelpie in no time. Over the half hour of playing around here I had noticed a few gannets working in the secluded bay up ahead. They were right in the shallows and as we moved in more and more started to turned up. Soon it was just havoc as they dive bombed the baitschool. We headed over and flicked out our softies. Being in such a pristine secluded spot I said to Stevo "there has to be kings in here." There was definitely kahawai but my third or fourth flick out got nailed by something big. Rod buckled and line peeling. I knew it had to be a king this time. It was a battle and being in only 10mtrs of water with rough on the bottom I had to play him hard. Man it was a hard fight and most of the time it was a stalemate. It had been such a good battle and after landing it we decided to keep it at 95cm long. We haven't had kingfish in a long time and Stevo was keen to take a bit home. I tried to get Stevo onto one as well but this time I set up the Rapala to drag around. We hooked up to a couple kahawai but soon the tell tale sign of line peeling and rod buckled like a horseshoe told us this was no kahawai. "Yeah boy" Stevo was on big time and loving it. It was another great scrap and after landing it and going close to a mtr and a bit more chunky than mine we decided to keep this one as well. Our bin was a little light on the snapper with only 3-4 and a couple Johnny's so this would top the day off for us nicely. After this we did call it a day until arriving back near the entrance of the Harbour which was full of birds. You can't really ignore that so we tried a couple drifts. She was blowing quite hard around 25knts now with no shelter being open beach but we did manage a couple more fish for the bin - a couple snaps and Stevo scored a nice trev. The weather was worsening with heavy rain, lots of wind and thunderstorms. We hadn't had weather like this for a long time on our trips but this is why we choose to stay at the top 10 as nine times out of ten you can still get a fish in somewhere. With it being just the 2nd day the plan was to sit out the worst of it through the morning, then maybe try get a surfcast in at our surfcast spot then do an evening tiki set. Early morning the rain had set in and to be honest it was nice lying in the cabin listening to it on the tin roof. It also gave me time to look ahead weather wise and try and come up with a plan for the rest of the week. By mid arvo the rain subsided a little and we headed over to a spot where we had caught some nice trev's on the surfcast during the day. Once again it was pretty quiet for us but it was just great to be back out and getting a line wet. A change to a 25-30knt westerly through the arvo ment only one place for us to fish into the evening and that was off Tokerau side. On our last trip Tokerau supplied the goods for us on the surfcaster and I was hoping for a repeat. The strong westerly wind would be behind us there, so it wouldn't be too uncomfortable for us at least. It had been a long day weather wise coming and going from camp but at last we were back on the beach again with less sign of rain and getting sand between the toes again. This is when the tiki comes into its own especially when being stuck on the land. For Stevo it's a nice relaxing way to finish a day off and also for me, but I would be flicking a bait or two out on the caster while Stevo sits in the warmth of the truck. With some of our fishing days being quite crazy and up to 15hrs long it is sometimes nice to just slow down, relax and soak it in. The great thing was we had our favourite bait this time - fresh kahawai which we had managed to catch. Last time we had some old mullet and salted bait so it would be interesting to see what this set would produce. We drove the beach for a few minutes and stopped around mid way. We do prefer to fish no less than mid way, we've always done better further along. The wind wasn't too bad and we had a little shelter from the smallish dunes this beach has. There was still rain coming through along the mainland but overall it had settled a lot apart from the wind. While we were at the cabin we had cut up the kahawai into nice cubes so it didn't take long for us to unpack everything and bait up. The plan was a 20min run, 40 min soak. We also were thinking of doing 2 sets but it was getting a little late in the arvo but we would see how it went on the first. Stevo was ready to rock and roll and dropped the seahorse into the tide. We had set the GPS pretty much in a straight line. 20mins later she was on the soak and it was time to get the Kotare out and flick a few baits. This is what I look forward to more, and once all rigged up with half a pillie I flicked it out. True to the plan, Stevo was in the car while I was at the water's edge watching a few stingrays play in the surf. It had been pretty quiet for the surfcaster over the 40 mins when Stevo fired up the tiki. I still had about 5 mins before he needed my help but nothing came by for me. I packed it in and headed over to help. The main trace line had just started to hit the sand and we were hoping for at least a couple, but that happened on the very first 2 hooks. The first fish was of nice size too, with the second not much smaller. These two hooks we set after the very last sinker and for some reason always seems to catch. The next fish was on the next hook after the sinker and of not bad size either. The first three fish would be between 40-60cm which isn't a bad fish at all. Most of the bait was gone and with another fish hitting the sand it started to look like we might have a good string this time. More un-baited hooks hit the sand and it looked like our favourite magic bait was flavour of the day. I could see more fish in the waves coming in and we had a couple more nicey's hit the sand. Another 60cm fish and we were only up to the midway sinker. I was hoping the second half wasn't holding as much fish as we probably already had about 6-7 in the bin. Most tiki sets you only get a handful of fish so it is exciting when you have a better set than normal. On average when tiki fishing you would normally only get between 4-5 fish for the 2 of us. More de-baited hooks were coming out and it was good that we were not getting much fish on that second half. There were a couple of busted traces near the end and just one more 60 hitting the sand for us. It was a pretty good soak this one, and in the end we ended up with 10 nice snaps with 3-4 around that 60cm mark. Although it was still light and I was thinking of surfcasting into the evening, we had enough fish in the bin so called it a day and an interesting one at that. These boats are built so well and if it is ride, stability and safety you are looking for in a boat then Osprey has to be at the top of your list when looking for a boat. I brought my first Osprey many years ago and when I had my two boys I brought a custom made 550CC knowing how safe these boats were - the standard height of the sides on these things are one of the reasons I brought my 550, they came up to the height of there chins. Description

These little vids I put together is of my own experiences and show the way I like to fish for some of NZ fish species, I fish a lot on the Hauraki Gulf (my back door step). I also travel to the far North each year where I target Kings on jigs and have started to enjoy straylining for Snapper in the shallow Bays and Harbours - Occasionally we also like doing a bit of softbaiting or micro jigging but our main fishing revolves around straylining. I hope you enjoy some of the footage and I will also try to incorporate a few tips and tricks on how and why we fish some of these places.
