The image, as usual, is the final image and not out of camera. To start off, we shot our model against a yellow backdrop. We used a four light setup and three poly boards to create the shot. To light up the background we placed two silver-inline umbrellas to either side. We placed a third umbrella more to the middle and higher up to make sure the background had an even spill all over. We didn't use any diffusing material to make sure the background is evenly lit. We placed two poly boards with the black sides to either side of the the model. This helps to create some contrast on both the left and right side of the model. For the front, we used a poly board placed to the front of the model, with a small octabox pointed directly at the model. We use these two in conjunction to ensure that the face is evenly lit from the front and the bottom when the light bounces off the poly board. There's a lot of strong colours in the image we're using, so we're first going to create an even colour tone by applying a Hue and Saturation Adjustment Layer. We'll start off by reducing the tones in the master tones. Then we'll move through the individual colour options to get that perfect desaturation on our image. Spend a lot of time on the Hue and Saturation to get the look just right. We then apply a Curves Adjustment Layer. We'll set anchor points for the highlights, the midtones and then another for the contrast. We're cautious not to take the contrast up too much. Our next step is to work on the Colour Balance, so we'll apply a Colour Balance Layer. We start off by working in the shadows and we adjust it by working with the different colour sliders. We then also move on over to the highlights. What's important to keep in mind is that the face should also get a blue tint to create a overall cooler effect. In out final step we apply a Selective Colour Adjustment Layer and we only work in the black tones. We adjust the different colour sliders to get the perfect look. the blacks are always good to get the perfect contrast. Note: You can always go back to your adjustment layers to tweak the effect. We're applying this effect after we've done most of the retouching and adjustments to our image. Always consider the image you're using when you apply this technique. Our image consists of only men doing manual labour, and the gritty effect adds a nice effect. We'll start off by duplicating our layer. Next, we'll open then filter menu and select Smart Sharpen. We normally work between 120 -150% for sharpening. We also choose 3 px radius not to blow it out completely and we keep the noise at 1%. Also select 'Remove Lens Blur.' We then duplicate the layer once more and invert the layer. We change the blending options and set it to Vivid Light. This leaves us with a mostly grey image. We then select Surface Blur from the Filter menu. We usually keep the radius around 50. We use Threshold to adjust the halos and we usually set our Threshold to 40. We then apply a Hue and Saturation layer and completely desaturate the image, so we're left with a grey image. Next, we'll merge all the layers in a master shortcut. We then set the blending option to soft light. We still play around with the Curves Adjustment layer and, using an inverted mask, brush in the highlights in the subjects. You can play around with masks to either bush out or brush in the desired effect. This tutorial is all about creating a colour pop in Photoshop. This image has already been retouched. That includes skin retouching, cropping, Dodging and Burning, etc. We start off by adding more contrast and highlights with a Curves Adjustment Layer. We then tweak the colours with A Hue and Saturation Adjustment Layer in the Master Tones. Next, we'll flatten our blacks with a Selective Colour Adjustment Layer and only work in the black tones. We'll then play around with a Levels Adjustment layers to add some contrast and highlights. We'll then add another Selective Colour Adjustment Layer and play around in the Red, Magentas and Neutral colour tones. We'll move around between the different tones. This would involve playing around with the sliders to get the right effect. We'll also go back in the Black Colour Tones to flatten the blacks a bit. For our final adjustment, we add another Levels Adjustment Layer to add a bit of contrast and highlights. As always, this image has already been retouched, we're simply applying the effect to create the mood. We start off with a Selective Colour Adjustment Layer and move straight away into the black tones. The idea is to tweak them a little bit to get the warmer colours out. You can use your own creativity and play around in the neutral tones, but we don't want to use it for our effect. Our next step is to apply a Black & White Adjustment Layer and change the preset to High Contrast Blue Filter. We then change the blending option to overlay (You can also choose Soft Light, depending on how hard you want the effect to be). We then drop the opacity down to 30. Seeing as it's the spooky month, we thought we'd spoil you guys with a creepy clown in retouch in Photoshop. Before we head in to Photoshop we first do our Raw Conversion. In Photoshop we'll start off by doing the fixing and cleaning on our subject and background. We used a grey backdrop to make it easier to drop in a new backdrop. We then drop in our background and desaturate it a bit. We then change the blending option to soft light and both the subject and the background would be immediately visible. We then use a curves adjustments layer to create a vignette effect around our subject. It's also apparent that some of the background elements are visible on the subject so we need to cut out out the subject properly. We use the quick selection tool, masks, etc. We needed a pop on our subject, so a simple way to do is is to duplicate the curves adjustment layer we used to create the vignette. To add a bit more contrast we used a curves adjustment layer. We also needed to adjust the colour to set the mood for the image. We used a Selective Colour Adjustment Layer and worked in the Neutral Tones. We might create a several Selective Colour Adjustment Layers to get the perfect colour effect. We add a brightness & Contrast Adjustment layer to create some more contrast. We create a Hue & Saturation layer to desaturate the image slightly. We then head over to Dodge and Burn to dodge those Highlights and burn the darks. We also added a background light effect. We did this by creating a new layer and using the gradient tool. We move this layer lower below the subject layer to have the effect behind the subject. We then also add a grunge effect to create a darker moodier image. One of our final stages is a creative choice. In this episode, we'll teach you how to clean and replace reflections in Photoshop. The idea is to still keep the image realistic. The process will involve creating two new layers, one for each lens of the sunglasses. We then use the pen tool to make a circular selection of each lens. Make sure when you make your selection that the feathering is set to zero. We also save our selection so we can come back if we need to make any changes. For the next step, we need to choose our foreground colour to fill our lens. Using the colour picker, we select a darker colour. We then choose a brown colour for background using the colour picker. Our next step involves using the gradient tool. Make sure your selection is active on the right channel. In the gradient tool we select the first option 'foreground to background.' Holding down shift, we make a vertical selection. To remove the lines created by using the gradient tool, we go to the filter menu and apply some noise. Apply this technique to both lenses (layers). We then apply a mask after grouping our layers. Remember to switch back to black and white foreground and background colours respectively. Use the brush to paint in the eyes and brush out the poly board. For the final touch, we create another layer and load our selection. Using the gradient tool, a white foreground colour and the selection 'foreground into transparent' we make a small gradient from bottom to top. Adjust the opacity to get the perfect effect. Apply to both selections (lenses). What we used for this technique: Make Selections with Pen tool. This is the light talk for the Free Halloween Tutorial. As always, the image we are discussing is the retouched version, and not the image out of camera. Both elements of Photoshop and Photography. We used with three lights, namely two striplights in the back, and a 82' silver-inline umbrella coming straight from the top. The subject was shot on a charcoal grey backdrop, which makes it easier to blend in the new background and textures and also easier to cut out the subject. The rim lights were placed to the left and right of the subject and the lights were almost also powered to their maxim. The striplights were used without any grid. We did this to create a strong rim light on the subject. This will also cause light to spill on the background but we tried to control this by creating an even spill. We also used a large silver-inlined umbrella placed basically above the subject. We didn't use any diffusing material in the umbrella. This helps to amplify the shadows to create a moody look. If you want more light in a subject's face we would advice using a poly board to bounce some light. Another important aspect was the background. You have to take your perspective into consideration. Our image lacks some colour, so the first thing we do is to add a Hue and Saturation Layer. We move out of the Master Tones and select the Red Tones. We only use the Saturation and push it slightly. We do the same in the yellow tones, but we push it a bit more than the red. NOTE: You can always fall back to your adjustment layers and change it. Next, we apply a Curves Adjustment Layer where we make subtle adjustments with a big impact. We increase the contrast and we flatten the blacks. Next, up we apply a Selective Colour Adjustment Layer. We immediately jump into the Black Colour Tones where we adjust our warm tones and fade the blacks a tiny bit more. We then move over to the neutral tones. Here we also tweak our colours and push the blacks a bit as well. One of our final adjustments is adding a yellow colour cast. We've already selected a certain colour, one which you can copy here, under Solid Colour Layer. We then change the blending option to Colour and then change the opacity to just below 20%. We then add a Gradient adjustment tool and choose a darker tone within the image. You can choose to either use the Gradient Adjustment Layer or not. In this setup, we're discussing a light setup for an advertisement campaign we shot for Lexus. It's important to note that the final image you see is not out of Camera. It's a result of combining many different layers in Photoshop. It's two different exposures shot separately. For shooting the car we used two different light modifiers, namely a strip softbox and a 82' silver inline umbrella. Both were set to medium power on the Elinchrom Strobes. The umbrella was mainly used to get several reflections on the body of the car. The strip softbox was used to highlight the darker spots with several different exposures. The strip softbox was used to create harder reflections. The Poly boards behind the vehicle were not used as light modifiers. They were placed there strategically to make it easier to cut out the Lexus and place it on the different background. It's important to note that this image has been retouched in Photoshop and it is not out of camera. For this shoot, we used three different light modifiers. First off we have the two strip softboxes to the back of the model to create a nice rim light. For the front, we used a small octobox, placed high enough not to generate any shadows. All three of these lights were used without diffusing material because it absorbs too much light when working with gels. Otherwise, we have to power up the strobes completely to the maximum power, but you still wouldn't have enough pop in your image. We shot the model against a 50% charcoal backdrop. If you move your model away far enough from the backdrop it goes from grey into black. We used a smoke machine to generate some smoke. Our final image didn't contain as much smoke, but you'll notice on the other images in this tutorial that it has some smokes in it. We also placed a poly board on the right-hand side of the model to have some light spill onto her. We did not use the professional gels normally used in these shoots. We worked with gels we found at a stationary store in stead. If you're going to do these shoots often, make sure to get the professional gels.
