In the long history of Persian culture, carpet is a unique symbol and its making has been inscribed on the UNESCO’s Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The weavers would turn the patterns of the rugs into lyrics, sing them aloud to let other weavers know the pattern, scattered with casual conversations. This tradition of pattern singing, called "Naqshe-Khani", has been passed down from generation to generation, but in recent years it has almost become a lost tradition. After years of research, Iranian ethnomusicologist and musician Mehdi Aminian has recreated this custom on stage. His ensemble performs the music with traditional Persian instruments rarely featured in Hong Kong, while the weaver sings and makes carpets. Video footage of carpet-weaving filmed in Iran is shown, providing a glimpse of the life of the Iranian people. Raha Arian: Vocal Ehsan Hamidi: Dotar This is an interpretation of the following original Herati Lullaby recording in which you hear the voice of Zaheer's mother. She is in the courtyard of her home, singing a lullaby over her son Nader's cradle, preparing him for his afternoon nap. In the local lullaby style, she incorporates Herati quatrains, prayers, and Sufi chants ("Allah Hu") into her lullaby. The verses she sings as a lullaby reflect the hardships of life, religious themes, and her hopes for her child's future. With its captivating melody and the recurring chant "Ad, Ho," inspired by the mystical traditions of Greater Khorasan, this work beautifully captures the poetic essence of the lives and emotions of the mothers of this region.
