Inspired by folk legends of witches gathering on the mythical Bald Mountain on St John's Eve, Mussorgsky wrote after first putting the music to paper: "So far as my memory doesn't deceive me, the witches used to gather on this mountain, ... gossip, play tricks and await their chief—Satan. On his arrival they, i.e. the witches, formed a circle round the throne on which he sat, in the form of a kid, and sang his praise... While at work on St. John's Eve I didn't sleep at night and actually finished the work on the eve of St. John's Day, it seethed within me so, and I simply didn't know what was happening within me." Mussorgsky revised and adapted the music several times for opera projects that were left abandoned or unfulfilled by the time of his death, and it only achieved wider recognition when Rimsky-Korsakov re-arranged the music into the orchestral fantasy we play regularly today. Best known for his symphonic cycle 'Má vlast', Smetana is credited with putting Czech music on the map with his 1866 comic opera The Bartered Bride, which rocketed to popularity in European opera houses after the composer's death in 1884. Telling the story of a love match in a country village complicated by disapproving parents and an opportunistic marriage broker, the opera is threaded through with music in the Bohemian dance tradition. We'll be performing the Overture to The Bartered Bride on Thursday 28 November at Cadogan Hall and Saturday 30 November at Guildford's G Live with our Principal Associate Conductor Alexander Shelley.
